1.

Create a culture built on doing good

Importance of making sure that giving back is at the foundation of the company’s
culture and core values. By coming from a place of sincerity that is true to the
company’s beliefs, a CSR program will become an extension of the company’s
intentions.

At SAIL, various initiatives such as establishment of 54 primary health centres, and

other facilities for the society is appreciating. Simply put, SAIL wants to make a
difference equally in the lives of its employees, customers and the communities it
serves.

2. Preventing exploitation of resources for future use:

SAIL is adamant that businesses should support charities or causes that employees are
already passionate about. 200 acres of degraded land has been restored through
afforestation at Purnapani flux mines of SAIL in Orissa by planting saplings which
includes horticulture species, forest species and a variety of grasses. SAIL has been a
for-runner in the establishment of the environment management system in the steel
industry in the Country. We started implementation of EMS-ISO 14001 in the mid
90’s with Salem Steel Plant being the initial plant to get certified. In Tandem, SAIL is
trying to prevent the exploitation of resources, and it’s saving them.

3. Improving the living standard of the society:

SAIL provides portable water facilities to people in and surrounding its townships.
Each of the SAIL plants has ensured that people residing in 16 km radius of its plants
have access to portable water facilities. This clearly shows that SAIL is promoting
sanitation and health across the country. Moreover, improving sanitation will surely
increase the living standards of people.

4. Efficient utilisation of resources

SAIL has signed an agreement with Department of Bio-Technology, Government of

India and Centre for Environment Management for Degraded Eco-system, University
of Delhi for ecological restoration of barren mined out areas and waste dump sites at
SAIL mines. SAIL decided to adopt about 79 villages of 8 states, namely, West
Bengal, Orissa, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Madhya
Pradesh to develop them as ‘Model Steel Villages’ in a phased manner. Till March
2012, 71 villages have been developed as Model Steel Villages.

With poverty in areas surrounding the particular villages, SAIL felt it was important
to take a look at them, and invest in something with the potential to be a long-term
solution to the problems facing his community.
