Chapter I

Introduction

1.1 Brief Background

The K to 12 Program covers Kindergarten and 12 years of basic education

(six years of primary education, four years of Junior High School, and two years

of Senior High School [SHS]) to provide sufficient time for mastery of concepts

and skills, develop lifelong learners, and prepare graduates for tertiary education,

middle-level skills development, employment, and entrepreneurship.

The researcher chose academic track, the academic is the track that

prepares students for the most common college courses such as business

management, engineering, and the sciences. Upon choosing the academic track,

the researcher chose General Academic; Science, Technology, Engineering, and

Mathematics (STEM) from four different strands. Science, Technology,

Engineering, and Mathematics are intertwining disciplines when applied in the

real world. The difference of the STEM curriculum with the other strands and

tracks is the focus on advanced concepts and topics. Under the track, you can

become a pilot, an architect, an astrophysicist, a biologist, a chemist, an

engineer, a dentist, a nutritionist, a nurse, a doctor, and a lot more. Those who

are also interested in Marine Engineering should take this track.

Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology programs are science-

intensive, with a major emphasis on the biological sciences. Organic chemistry

and microbiology are some areas of emphasis. Students may spend extensive

time in a laboratory setting, developing practical skills and gaining familiarity with

the tools used in the profession. In some cases, student complete internships in

hospitals or clinics. Common prerequisites for admission are a high school

diploma and background in the sciences, including biology and chemistry. For

candidates who can pass qualifying tests, professional certifications are offered
by organizations such as the National Credentialing Agency. Medical

technologists usually work in clinical laboratory settings performing tests on

patients, studying results and managing treatment plans. The Professional

Regulation Commission (PRC) announces that 4,821 out of 5,661 passed the

Medical Technologist Licensure Examination given by the Board of Medical

Technology in the cities of Manila, Baguio, Cebu, Davao, Iloilo, Legazpi, Lucena

and Tuguegarao this August 2017.

1.2 Objective of the study

2.1 Natural Description of the Course

BS in Medical Technology (BSMT), also known as Bachelor of Science in

Medical Laboratory Science, is a four-year degree program that equips the

researcher with knowledge and skills in laboratory tests used in the detection,

diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of diseases. The program consists of

general education subjects (such as English and Filipino) and professional

subjects (such as Clinical Chemistry and Blood Banking). The researcher will be

taught on how to collect, preserve and analyze specimens such as blood, urine,

cells and tissues as well as the preparation of reagents (compounds or

substances added to a specimen in order to create a chemical reaction) and

stains (a discoloration made by a foreign matter). The program will also train you

on how to use modern equipments, instruments and scientific methods to provide

accurate laboratory results.

2.2 Advantages in taking the course

 Medical technology is suitable for those who enjoyed, and were good at, a

range of topics at A level. It calls on those who enjoys chemistry, biology,

and other scientific disciplines.

 It opens up a range of options, unlike medicine, which trains you to be a

doctor and little else. Medical Technology degrees can line you up

laboratory work, research posts, public health, teaching, and

pharmaceuticals.

 Being a medical technology student means you are not just learning how

to make people better, you are learning how to make the process of

making people better.

 Becoming a medical technologist requires intimate knowledge of complex

technical processes and how to use delicate instruments. This makes you

very desirable in the job market.

 As with all good medical courses, medical technology puts hefty focus on

working experience and getting into the community, so transition from unit

to working life is quick and easy.

2.3 Top 2 Schools Offering the Course

Saint Louis University

Saint Louis University got a score of 90.50% in the year 2017 ranking of
medical technology/medical laboratory science schools. Aside from earning a
perfect weighted passing percentage in the two examinations this year, SLU’s
graduate David Marco B. Bildan landed in the top 2 spot of the successful
examinees who garnered the ten (10) highest places in the February 2017
Medical Technologist Licensure Examination. Saint Louis University offers
program in medical laboratory science, under the School of Natural Sciences, as
(CHEd) Center of Development (COD). In 2017, all 330 examinees successfully
passed the medical technologist licensure examination.

University of Santo Tomas

University of Santo Tomas offers 3 medical technology degree programs in

bachelor of science, master of science, and doctorate degree program in medical
technology leading to the Doctor of Philosophy major in Medical Technology, the
first in the Philippines. The Department of Medical Technology is a Center of
Excellence as recognized by the Commission on Higher Education (CHEd). UST
marked a 93.09% weighted passing percentage from a total of 275 examinees in
the year 2017. Shaira Rae Yee Billena scored 90.60 to place fourth among 4,821
