Online tests are based on computer technology and the network ability of the internet to deliver
and score tests. Many different questions, formats are available and can be implemented within
the same test such as multiple choice, multiple response, fill in the and true or false.

Online Testing Methods

While creating online tests, designers often turn to a few different styles of test. Multiple choice
tests, true-or-false tests, multiple response tests, matching tests and fill in the blanks tests are all
common online test methods. Each one works well for some kinds of exams and poorly for
others. But by introducing a mix of testing types, designers can create more dynamic courses and
keep material from getting too dull.

Most Common Online Test methods are:

ONLINE EXAMINATION:

Online Exams is being launched because a need for a destination that is beneficial for both
institutes and students. With this site, institutes can register and host online exams. Students can
give exams and view their results. This site is an attempt to remove the existing flaws in the
manual system of conducting exams.

Purpose Online Exams System fulfils the requirements of the institutes to conduct the exams
online. They do not have to go to any software developer to make a separate site for being able to
conduct exams online. They just have to register on the site and enter the exam details and the lists
of the students which can appear in the exam. Students can give exam without the need of going
to any physical destination. They can view the result at the same time. Thus the purpose of the site
is to provide a system that saves the efforts and time of both the institutes and the students.

What is Online Exams System all about? Online Exams System is a web application that
establishes a network between the institutes and the students. Institutes enter on the site the
questions they want in the exam. These questions are displayed as a test to the eligible students.
The answers enter by the students are then evaluated and their score is calculated and saved. This
score then can be accessed by the institutes to determine the passes students or to evaluate their
performance. Online Exams System provides the platform but does not directly participate in, nor
is it involved in any tests conducted. Questions are posted not by the site, but users of the site.

The site requires an institute to register before posting the questions.

The site has an administrator who keeps an eye on the overall functioning of the system.

The site gets revenue by charging the institutes each time they want to conduct the exam.

The system entitled “Online Exams System” is application software, which aims at providing
services to the institutes and providing them with an option of selecting the eligible students by
themselves. It is developed by using J2EE technology and related database.

How online examination system works?

The teacher or course builder creates an account with an exam builder. In such an exam system
you can create questions and add them to the exam. You can choose between multiple choice
questions or free text questions. The students are provided with a link to the online exam; they
sign up and can take the exam. They see the results immediately afterwards. Read more about
the objectives of an online examination system.

Benefits and limitations of an online examination system?

The big benefit of online examination is the reduction of costs and time, both from the student as
from the teacher. The biggest limitation is that you have to be online to use an online examination
system. Hence the name "online".
Who uses an online examination system?
Everybody who needs an exam to be taken by a group of students. Our customers range
from schools and teachers to companies.

What are typical features of an online examination system?

Obviously it must be possible to make an exam. And create questions. Preferably the exam
provides for the option to create a question bank. And you have to be able to set the rules when a
student passes or fails the exam. Those features are just the basics. Look at our online exam
features to get a broader picture.

Objectives of online examination system

Online examination is becoming more popular in this digital century. But what are the objectives
of online examination system? The objectives of online examination will be explained in this
article.

User-friendly system:
User-friendly systems are not only needed for the creator, but also for participants. “Intuitive” is
key. One of the best examples is the software of the iPhone. It has a lot of options, but is still
something you can figure out without needing a manual. Of course, an online examination system
is different, but still has some similarities. Once an online examination system is not user-friendly,
creators and participants will move on to another system. This is obviously something you don't
want to happen.

Responsive design
A responsive design is an approach where the web designer wants to reach an optimal web
experience for a wide range of devices. A responsive site scales with the size of the screen without
sacrificing the text readability or usability of the user interface.

Offering several types of questions

Multiple choice, fill in the blanks and free text. These are the options you can use with our online
examination system. Having more than one options is necessary to check several types of
knowledge. Not all examination can be checked with multiple choice questions.

Auto exam publish

Do you want your exam for anyone or for a predefined group of users? The online exam can be
made for people who are invited to the exam and have to log in with a username and password. If
your exam is free for anyone, you can insert a link for making the exam.

Automatically checked answers.

Having to check all answers is very time-consuming. So, having the answers checked
automatically and instantly will eventually pay off. It’s less work for the creator of the exam and
participants don’t have to wait too long for getting the results of their exams. Catching two birds
with one stone.

Group report performance analysis

Having the results and statistics is nice to get a whole overview of the performances. Which users
score best? On what kind of questions did users score low at? It’s all possible with our tool. And
know what’s even better? Administrators can export the results and statistics to an Excel file.

Advantages and disadvantages of online examination system

To quote Johan Cruijff, one of the greatest football players ever: "elk voordeel heb zijn
nadeel", Dutch for "Every advantage has a disadvantage". This also is true for an online
examination system.
What are the advantages of an online examination?
An online examination system has plenty of advantages:
1. It saves paper.
You never have to print an exam for your students and hand them out. Saves paper. Saves
trees. Everybody happy.
2. It saves time.
You can setup an exam in such a way that it will auto-grade itself. If you only use multiple
choice questions you never have to check an exam again. The online exam system will
take care of that hassle. Completly automated.
3. It saves more time.
The distribution of the exam doens't take you any time. Just upload the email addressess of
your students and send them an invite. And after the exam they get their result instantly.
4. It saves you money.
You don't need to buy any paper. Sending an email is free. On top of that you save on the
logistics: your students don't have to assemble in classroom to take the exam. They can do
it within a given time frame from their own device. You don't have to rent a classroom.
You don't have to hire someone to check the students taking the exam.
5. It saves the student money.
Students don't have to travel to a specific location to conduct the exam. So even for
students from remote area's it's possible to take the exam.
6. It's more secure.
You can make a big question bank with a lot of questions. Every student gets a random
selection from that question bank. So it's of little use to share the questions among the
exam takers to give them a head start. Try that on paper ;)

What are the disadvantages of an online examination?

And now for the disadvantages:

1. You have to keep in mind that your students will take the exam on their own device in their
own time with nobody to check up on them, so you have to alter your questions to provide for
this situation. You have to ask questions which are not easily to be retrieved from books or the
internet. Or you can add a timer to each question so there is no time to search for the answer.
2. Open text questions are possible, but they don't auto-grade, so you have to check them
yourself.

3. An online exam system is a little bit more susceptible for fraud. So you have to keep that in
mind if you setup your exam. Do you want to share the results immediately after the result? In
that case you can setup a question bank to solve the issue of fraud. Handing out all questions
& Answers of a question bank to students is ok. Because they have to learn all the questions &
answers by heart. And when they're done they master the material.

METHODOLOGY

Research Methodology refers to search of knowledge one can also define research methodology
as a scientific and systematic search for required information on a specific topic.

10 Companies Who Use Psychometric Testing

A survey by the Society for Human Resource Management estimates that at present, 18% of
companies use psychometric testing in the hiring process. It was also found that this percentage of
users is growing at a rate of 10-15% per year.

Applying for jobs has become an easier today than it was a few years back when the internet was not
a very popular resource of communication. For employers, this means having more applications to
evaluate before they could decide on the right candidate for a job. If the person hired was wrong, it
could be estimated to be at the loss of at least one year’s pay.
This is why many companies have begun employing psychometric assessments as a tool to weed out
candidates to be dropped and accept those fit to proceed to the next stage of the recruitment process.
When used fittingly, cognitive and psychometric assessments hike the chances of success for new
employees.

Psychometric tests are designed to test two qualities of the applicants namely, their personality and
work abilities. Personality tests are often carried out by using questionnaires while the ability is
measured with tests like logical reasoning, numerical reasoning, mechanical reasoning, verbal
reasoning, abstract reasoning, and others.

Hence, here are 10 top companies that use psychometric assessments.Let us have a look at why and how they
use them.

Practo and their Psychometric Testing

One of the leading healthcare technology startups, Practo too uses psychometric tests other than just
asking its candidates to solve real-time problems. Practo’s CEO and Co-founder, Shashank
ND states that they as a team believe in hiring people who match the company’s culture and are
passionate about its vision.

Citigroup and their Psychometric Testing

It is one of America’s best multinational investment banking and financial services, which uses
numerical reasoning psychometric tests. The numerical tests are known for the increase in the level

Page | 39
of difficulty with succeeding questions and their logical reasoning, a nonverbal rather pictorial test, is
known for being particularly challenging. The tests are only suitable for applicants who are into
technology, operations, and HR job functions.

Banish and their Psychometric Testing

Daisy Jing, a YouTube vlogger, young entrepreneur, and owner of the multi-million
company Banish uses Myers-Brigg and Disc tests for personality assessments during the hiring
process. In Daisy’s words, she is grateful for the analysis because they allow her to see the
applicant’s attitude, strengths and weaknesses. This also gives her a better understanding of how to
lead the applicant and how to utilise his strengths and weaknesses. Daisy also says that the
candidates can also gauge their strengths and weaknesses helping them in improving themselves for
the betterment of the company.

Stock Holding Corporation and their Psychometric Testing

HR Manager, Sujatha Krishnakumar explains that they used psychometry for Competency
Mapping, conducting assessments, generating reports and analytics. The result was that the final
reports were well laid out and gave them useful insights about the participants.

ExxonMobil and their Psychometric Testing

The multinational company does not see an end to the testing process. The recruitment process is
divided into stages that start with an online application form and ends at the assessment centre. At
the stage of the application form, a candidate is asked to answer a few competency questions, and
some other personality test questions are then asked during a telephone interview and other
assessments. However, the main psychometric test is the second stage, and it is an online numerical
reasoning test of 20 minutes, supplied by one of the biggest online testing companies around.

Ford Motor and their Psychometric Testing

The famous car company uses a two-part psychometric test namely, numerical
reasoning and inductive reasoning tests. Numerical reasoning assessments contain 20 questions
and are time for a duration of 20 minutes. The numerical assessment tests its candidates on statistics,
ratios, percentages, and graph interpretation while the inductive reasoning assessment has the need

Page | 40
for knowledge of logic to succeed. The later incorporates having to identify patterns in a sequence of
images.

Hewlett Packard and their Psychometric Testing

The psychometric tests for Hewlett Packard popularly varies depending on the type of job functions
that an applicant applies for. However, HP’s recruitment process also comprises of a telephone
interview and other assessments. During these evaluations, the behavioural and personality tests are
verbally administered. The ability test primarily consists of numerical and verbal reasoning tests.

Procter & Gamble and their Psychometric Testing

Applicants for Proctor and Gamble must be practised for success with their psychometric
assessments. The tests used by the company are completely diverse from others that you might have
been familiar with. The tests are divided into two parts namely the Competency test, also known as
the P&G Success Drivers Assessment and the P&G Reasoning Tests. The former examines the
thought patterns of candidates to judge whether they are suited for the post and have what it takes to
be a part of the family. This is a personality test, and the latter is a reasoning test that comprises of

The Challenges

InMobi is one of India's Top IT Product companies and the expected caliber of developer hires is
very very high. This was InMobi's First Campus Hiring Drive - Drive for hiring Developers and Test
engineers. They needed to work with an online assessment system in order to identify these high
quality engineers in accordance to industry standards. Key problems revolved around:

How to differentiate between the good and the better coders?

Were in need of a Skill focused Simulator based tests to evaluate candidate's coding abilities in
the greatest detail?

How to deliver these tests - with time and cost efficiency?

Saves time, saves logistics, digital documentation of each potential Employee's skills. InMobi carried
out their first round of testing on Campuses remotely and shortlisted on the same day - close to 10%
of all the assessed candidates to move to the face to face interview round. This process helped them
to reduce time to hire, reduce travel costs and helped save Technical Panel Interview Hours.

Mettl's content team developed custom content to test very niche technical skills across these job
roles and difficulty levels. InMobi used Mettl pre-canned question banks on Data Structures,
Algorithms, DBMS, Operating Systems, Analytical and verbal reasoning to test candidates.

 Hands-on Coding Simulator

Mettl's Coding Assessments allowed InMobi to test candidates on their coding abilities down to the
code efficiency level - concepts like recursion, AI, stacks and more - in order to get the best
developer team in place.

Scalability

InMobi conducted 1000+ assessments over the period of months across 8 College Campuses - spread
all over India.

Suggestions

 Read and understand the test guidelines. Be sure you can answer these questions: Will the test
take place at a specific date and time, or can you take the exam at any point during a particular
window of time? How much time will you have to complete the test? Can you take the test at home,
or must you take the exam in a specific location (e.g., a campus computer lab)? Are there any other
important, “need to know” factors outlined by the instructor?
 Know the test format. What kinds of questions will the instructor use on the exam—multiple-
choice, fill-in, short answer, essay? Perhaps a combination of various types?
 Test yourself. If your instructor makes a practice exam available to you, take it! You may also find
practice tests in your class textbook.

Page | 73
 Check your computer. Avoid last-minute problems! Whether you’re using your own computer or
one in a lab, verify that it has all the correct hardware and software well in advance of the exam.
Also, make sure you’ll be in a location with an adequate Internet location.
 Study the class materials! Even if the test is “open book,” it’s still important to study and review
just as if you were taking the test in a classroom.
 Plan your time. As you test yourself, limit your time to that which will be allotted for the actual test,
and decide how long you will spend on each question (e.g. if the test is one hour long, and you’ll
have
 Carve out a quiet test-taking spot with minimal distractions. Turn off all notifications from IM,
your phone, your email, and elsewhere (or, set them to silent). Shut off the TV and radio. Let your
roommates or family know that you’ll be taking a test, so that they’re less likely to interrupt you
during that time.
 Determine when you will take the test. You may have to take the exam at a specific time; however,
if the test will be available for several hours (or even a few days), choose a time that presents the
least potential for distraction, interruption, and stress.
 Gather all that you’ll need to take the test. If you can have materials such as notes, books, or
writing implements with you, be sure that they’re set to go.
 Take a deep breath! Once you’re logged in, take a moment to relax and get focused.

During the Online Exam:

 Keep an eye on the clock. You may want to set an alarm to notify you when you have limited time
(e.g., 10 minutes) remaining in your testing period.
 Print and save copies of the test questions, as well as your answers. These will prove extremely
helpful if you have technical problems during the test or if you encounter issues while submitting
your answers.
 First, write short-answer or essay questions in a word-processing program. This makes it easier
to edit and check your work. Once you’re done, then cut and paste your answer into the designated
field on your exam site.
 Don’t leave the test page! If you are permitted to search the web or check other websites for
information, do not use the same tab or copy of the browser as you do for your exam—you may lose
all your work. Instead, open a second copy of your browser (or, choose a completely different
browser), then conduct your search.

 Technical problems? Don’t panic. But do contact your instructor immediately, detailing the exact
problem that occurred and any error messages you might have received. If you can take a screen
shot, that is helpful as well.
 Check your work before you submit it. Ensure that every answer is complete and appears as you
intended. Review the accuracy of your answers, as well as your spelling and grammar.
 Click submit. You should only need to do so once, but if you have a problem, try once more. If you
still have a problem submitting the test, let your instructor know immediately, and send your
intended answers in an attached document.

Review on online examination:

 Assess your own progress. How do you believe you did? What questions did you find confusing?
Did you have to skip anything? Return to your notes and readings, and see if you can find the
answers to the questions that challenged you.
 Check your grade. In some cases, you may be able to learn your grade immediately. However,
exams with written answers will take longer for your instructor to grade, so allow some time to find
out your score.
 Ask yourself how you can improve on the next exam. Did your study strategies work? Did your
plan for taking the test online prove successful? Write down your observations and keep them in
mind for the next time you take a test. (Watkins and Corry, 183-185)
