Originate and develop concepts - Task 1: Research Report

A. Project Goals
In order to generate the ideas, I will write a research report of potentially informative topics
that might be pertinent to a broadcasting network such as ABC. The project goal is to
present social issues considering the interest and range of topics demanded by the TV
station and, with that, make people reflect about current local and global issues that have
been generating social and environmental instabilities. The sections of documentaries and
also factual series seems to fit better in what I am keen to show.

B. About ABC Television

As ABC is a non-advert company that relies on government funds, Considering the ABC`s
backgroung, it seems that topics with social relevance could be of great interest for the
company since it presents real and recurrent realities that could - and must - call the
attention of society. The broadcasting network has an Indigenous department just for
developing indigenous content, for example, aiming to engage and entertain this specific
public with compelling stories. When it comes to the production of a documentary, the TV
station considers food one of its main topics of interest. This topic has a big range of issues
that have been more and more highlighted in the past years. How is ABC funded
(government funded) - No adverts?
What are the core values of ABC?

C. Current Industry Trends

The research showed that most of the trending topics, not only of ABC, but also of other
mainstream broadcast networks, are related to breaking news and entertainment. While the
first has an extended variety of topics, from politics to sports, the second is more specified in
curiosities and multimedia content, such as videos.
Can you provide some basic sources for your research?

D. Potential Gaps in the Marketplace

There is a huge gap of informative scientific contents, such as documentaries and
multimedia related to social and environmental issues. Considering that humanity is passing
through one of its most delicate moments on many essential fields, there is still a lot of
opportunity to explore some urgent issues that have been happening around the globe, such
as Aboriginal marginalization in Australia and massive production of food that generates
waste and impact directly on the environment.

E. Development Factors
The most important factors to develop a good documentary that can bring the attention to its
spectator is the use of first class professionals and equipments to generate good footages
and filmings. Said that, it is required enough funding to pay both the staff and also all the
equipment required. The second stage is about the costs of travels and all the infrastructure
required to do all the filmings with enough time and money. It is also important to stand out
that the staff is not just about the filming staff, but also the directors and producers that will
make sure that the program has a purpose and is presented in the right way.
can you specify estimated budgets… high, low, etc...

F. Research of Competitors
Some other TV companies, such as National Geographic and Discovery Channel also have
some really good quality documentaries about nature and environmental issues. However,
there are few TV programs showing the drawbacks of capitalism in modern society with
specific topics. Considering the purpose and specifications of both programs showed above,
it seems that its originality and appellant ideas could bring the attention of a specific public.

Task 2: Concept Development

A. Primary ideas
I - Factual series about Aborigine marginalization in Australia (Category: Indigeneous)
The project goal is to present in a provocative way the current situation of Aborigine people
living in cities of Northern Australia and also the north of Queensland. The idea is to make
people think more about this current issue, watching how their marginalization is just a
consequence of their history by presenting historical and sociological facts explained by
specialists and illustrated by shootings.

II - Documentary about the importance of organic and independent production of food

(Category: Factual & Documentary)
By presenting a number of different researches that shows how the production of mass
consumption of food impacts directly on the environment and also people`s life, the
documentary will present this issue not just as an environmental emergency, but also its
consequences to human health. The main idea is to make people reflect about the
importance of reviewing this way of producing in order to achieve urgent environmental
goals, such as avoiding food waste and creating reforestation projects instead of
monoculture lands. In this way, organic and independent production comes as the best and
maybe unique choice in the future.
