Land & Sea’s DYNOmite Dynamometers are affordable, state-of-the-art automotive and marine engine dyno systems featuring sophisticated data- acquisition electronics. Their unique design delivers a price/performance ratio formerly unheard of for professional, computerized dynamometers. “Modular upgrade path… meets today’s budget while protecting your investment!”

Heat-treated input shaft couples the mobile stand’s absorber to your engine’s 1-3/8" x 10 splined clutch disk (or optional heavy-duty dampened engine drive plate). Docking station versions use a telescoping driveshaft.

Absorber to bell-housing adapter plate fits popular GM and Ford bell-housing patterns to the mobile engine stand. Its unique design transmits no torque back through the frame. Can be field adapted to other applications. Docking station versions feature a racecar- like engine plate.

hoses, engine-temperature thermistor, and full-function data wiring harness. (Several other modular options, like our cooling tower and full docking station or reaction cradle mount configuration upgrades, may be added at any time.)

Test over 800 Hp* capacity with our standard 13" toroidal-flow water-brake absorber, or 2,000+ with Siamese-rotor version. Loads most high performance engines at any throttle setting or RPM you will need to test at – indefinitely! (Requires minimum of 5 gpm @ 30+ psi for every 100 continuous Hp. Many other water-brake, AC, or eddy-current absorber combinations are available to test from 1 to over 10,000 Hp.)

DYNO-MAX software option creates a full engine dynamometer lab on your Windows PC. Features include: real-time trace graph display, adjustable voice/color limit warnings, pushbutton controls, plus user

configurable analog and digital gauge ranges. Publication-quality color graphs and detailed reports are available for printing or even importing into other programs. With appropriate automated electronic loading and throttle control hardware options, operators can easily execute complex race simulations and engine test cycles. (See web site for a full list of DYNO-MAX features.)

Develop more powerful engines by pinpointing exact RPM locations of horsepower loss or gain. Evaluate components, tuning changes, engine durability, etc.

Know what works versus what should stay on the shelf. Map a fuel-injection or spark-curve map without endless test track time. Perform standardized break-in, endurance tests,

or run complex engine simulations from idle to full throttle

– without any tedious programming. The value of dyno

testing is well accepted, so customers willingly pay for dynoing.

Simplified installation is one benefit of the mobile engine-stand’s design. With a few options, roll your unit outside for testing – no expensive dyno cell or ventilation system required. However, as your business expands, step up to a full-blown docking station test cell (above page) and multiple engine carts – without squandering your original investment.

Easy test set-ups by mechanics and machinists with no dyno experience. It can take less than an hour to install, test, and output report data with the DYNOmite. Just fasten the mobile stand’s adapter assembly to your engine’s clutch bell housing and bolt everything onto the stand’s adjustable mounts (or drop an engine onto a docking station cart and roll it into the cell), hook up the wiring and hoses, and test.

Automated load control using an optional electronic auto-load servo (high or ultra-flow) kit to replace the standard manual-load control. Just push buttons to set a test RPM or sweep rate and the DYNOmite’s advanced PID algorithms run the test. The dynamometer computer logs the data automatically, so you do not have to run the engine to death just getting a simple test curve. You can even add an electronic throttle control to further automate many of DYNO-MAX “Pro’s” built-in tests or to maximize the capabilities of any simulations that you create. (Electronic auto-load control is standard on all our “Pro” water-brake, eddy-current, or AC-absorber dynamometer systems.)

Affordable upgrades including: spare rolling engine stands (or docking carts), cushioned drive plates (or telescoping driveshafts), sprint-car engine adapters, thermostatically controlled cooling tower, on-board fuel systems and starters,

stainless-steel engine-stand drip tray, fuel-flow and airflow turbines, weather station, EGT (exhaust-gas temperature) thermocouple kits, AFR (air/fuel ratio) monitors, air and liquid pressure transducers, RTDs, thermistors, knock sensors, integrated five-gas exhaust analyzers, precision crankshaft-degree position encoders, high-speed cylinder-pressure mapping systems, and both servo-load and throttle-control options. Land & Sea’s affordable DYNOmite Axle-Hub Dyno measures true installed horsepower, without having to “estimate” tire drag and slip losses. It provides the long running time absorption capacity and repeatable results that racers and engineers demand for developing and tuning performance engines. “Quick mounts and automatic camber adjustment is standard… no leveling is necessary!”

Reads TRUE axle-hub Hp using precision full-bridge temperature-compensated torque transducers – and includes compensation for driveline inertia during transient testing. Only axle-hub or engine dynamometers

DYNOmite Axle-Hub Dynamometers are available with large
eddy-current and/or AC (motoring) absorber options. Motoring
allows for coasting road-load simulations - for off-throttle tuning.

DYNOmite Data-Acquisition Computer displays and records true unlimited Hp, torque, RPM, elapsed time, etc. at up to 1,000 readings per second (per channel). It automatically applies correction factors for air temperature, barometric pressure, and relative humidity.

More than acceleration Hp can be measured with the DYNOmite axle-hub modules; they have the continuous absorption capacity that serious tuners need. Measuring power under temperature stabilized

(longer term) controlled steady-state RPM loading is vital for the proper mapping of engine management systems and guess-free emissions work.

Axle-Hub dynos (AWD or 2WD) are available with eddy-current or AC (motoring) absorbers. Our smaller

available for traction-control vehicle testing on any type dynos.

6,000+ Hp* 2WD capacity with our unique super-duty over/under-driven axle-hub absorbers. These multi- absorber units can be factory configured for anything from high-speed dragsters to very- high-torque tractors. They bring engine-dyno-cell load capacities, and stable testing capabilities, right into your race garage! Just couple directly to the axle – avoiding all tire traction and loss issues.

2,000+ or 3,000+ Hp* Pro AWD axle-hub systems include four heavy-duty rolling modules with eddy-current controllers and high-speed (low inertia) air-cooled absorbers, automatic camber compensation, thermostatically controlled fans,

electronic AWD-axle synchronization, four dual torque transducers, swivel casters, alloy quick-change axle-flange adapters, DYNOmite-Pro data- acquisition computers, axle and engine (inductive clamp) RPM

pickups, Auto-Load Control, 28-channel data harnesses, 0-255 degree Fahrenheit temperature thermistor, DYNO-MAX “Pro” software, Windows 8-equipped Dell laptop, rolling computer stand, Air/Fuel Ratio Module (with vacuum pump), Weather- Station Kit, 42" cooling fan, color printer, DYNOmite banner, accessories package, and manual. Also available with AC drive and motor powered ACtiveSync™ upgrade (axle synchronization and motoring option).

Also available with AC drive and motor powered ACtiveSync™ upgrade (axle synchronization and motoring option).

Sustained Hp and top end require an absorption dynamometer (i.e. a DYNOmite system). Unlike “acceleration spurt” inertial testing, it can load a vehicle indefinitely.* The absorber allows running controlled RPM step or sweep Hp tests. Everything is under computer control.

Simulate driving conditions on your axle-hub dyno by letting DYNO-MAX and your PC take control. DYNO- MAX features a “Road Load Simulation” mode that simulates vehicle momentum, air drag, rolling friction, etc. Enter the vehicle’s weight and drag data and then allow the software to monitor MPH vs. applied Hp, as it adjusts the dyno’s road load accordingly. To the vehicle driveline and operator, the feel is like actually driving.

Verify emissions under load using your existing, or our

optional (digitally integrated) DYNOmite 5-gas, exhaust analyzer. Proper emission testing procedures require repeatable absorber load control, impossible on simple inertia dynos. No more trying to use unloaded idle data to verify that repaired vehicles are in full emissions compliance. Send customers for state inspections with confidence.

Traction-Controlled Front, Rear, or All Wheel Drive cars and trucks can be tested with the appropriate model DYNOmite AWD axle-hub dyno or a 2WD model using our ACtiveSync™ axle-synchronization modules. AWD models allow front/rear torque bias monitoring, and our high-end AC versions even allow sophisticated traction control testing. We can also update many other manufacturer’s single-axle chassis dynos, with our ACtiveSync™ axle-synchronization modules, to allow testing of traction-controlled vehicles. These modules feature 20-Hp motoring drive units and micro-second response AC controllers that provide precision matching of the unpowered axles (on traction-controlled ABS-equipped vehicles) during 2WD dynamometer testing.

Quick-change axle-flange adapters and caster-equipped modules are easy to set up for a test, making it practical to skip those old time-consuming road trips. Just remove the tires, couple the adapters, hook up the tach (or use “Smart Ratio™”) and test – a full report prints out automatically. When you are done, the same wheels allow you to just roll the modules into a corner of your shop. No dedicated test bay, car lift, or digging on your floors (to construct a large pit) is required.

WRX STI on axle-hub dynamometer, with our ACtiveSync™ option (on rear). This option provides precision speed matching, even on unpowered 2WD axles for traction-controlled vehicles.

Dynamically balanced flywheels, concentric-mounted axle-flange drive interface, and innovative automatic camber compensation dramatically limit vibration! Test most production vehicles up to 200 MPH.

Fix driveline problems that might never show up in the garage, like shifting issues, driveshaft vibration, brake squeal, bearing noises, brake shudder, exhaust rattles, etc. – without costly field testing. Lack of tire noise or belt drives allows you to more easily hear what is going on, even at high speeds.

Specialty axle-hub (PTO) dynos are also available, as custom systems, for testing ATVs, karts, snowmobiles, tractors, and other recreational or industrial vehicles. As these pages show, we manufacture more types of dynos than any other company in the world. For your unique dynamometer system needs, please call us for help!

Land & Sea’s DYNOmite Chassis Dynamometer Systems combine sophisticated data- acquisition electronics with DYNO-MAX™ software for affordable (inertial + steady state) horsepower testing. “High speed power testing and road-load simulation without leaving the garage.”

DYNOmite data-acquisition computer displays and records true unlimited Hp, torque, RPM, elapsed time, etc. at up to 1,000 readings per second (per channel). It will even automatically apply SAE correction factors for air temperature, barometric pressure, and relative humidity.

More than acceleration Hp can be measured with DYNOmite absorption units, because they utilize an actual strain-gauge-equipped torque transducer. Measuring power under a controlled RPM load is vital for the proper mapping of engine management systems and guess-free emissions work. Avoid “dynos” that simply spin the vehicle’s tires up against their roll’s inertia (flywheel resistance) without having any ability to simultaneously control and measure absorption load. Rather than measuring the torque, they derive it from the acceleration (similar to extracting

numerous configurations of production chassis dynamometers.

FWD/RWD or AWD (to 1,500+ Hp*) chassis kits include: 8½", 13", or 20" medium-inertia dual-roller assembly, removable roller shield, drive-up ramps, wheel chocks, casters, water or eddy-current absorber with step-up drive, electronic torque transducer, DYNOmite data-acquisition computer, AC power supply, electronic auto-load control, DYNO-MAX software, inductive RPM pickup, required hoses, engine-temperature thermistor, and full-function data harness. (Optional AWD upgrade, with dual eddy-current absorbers and an electrically adjustable wheelbase system, is shown in the image at right.)

horsepower from drag-strip data). Such units cannot maintain a MPH or RPM setting, while also displaying true torque and Hp – like a DYNOmite can!

High-end Pro chassis systems (to 4,000+ Hp*) include: a FWD/RWD (optional AWD upgrade shown below) tube-steel frame with 24", 30", 44", or 60"-diameter medium-inertia rolls, bolt-on diamond-tread deck plating, floor anchors, wheel chocks, vehicle tie downs, water or eddy-current absorber(s) with step-up drive, electronic torque transducer, DYNOmite 28-channel data-acquisition computer, inductive RPM pickup, DYNO-MAX “Pro” software, printer, Windows 8 ® -equipped Dell laptop, mobile computer stand, electronic auto-load control, weather station, AFR module, 42" high-volume cooling fan, hoses, engine-temperature thermistor, and full-function data harness.

Sustained Hp and top end require an absorption dynamometer (i.e. a DYNOmite system). Unlike “acceleration spurt” inertial testing, these can load a vehicle indefinitely.* The absorber allows running controlled RPM step or sweep Hp tests. Everything is under computer control via the included Electronic Auto Load.

Simulate driving conditions on your chassis dyno by letting DYNO-MAX and your PC take control. DYNO-MAX features a “Road Load Simulation” mode that simulates vehicle momentum, air drag, rolling friction, etc. Enter the vehicle’s weight and drag data and then allow the software to monitor MPH vs. applied Hp, as it adjusts

Add AWD, with Electronic Axle Synchronization, to (any brand) single-axle chassis dynamometer. We can convert most – at a fraction of the cost of a new dyno!

Dynamically balanced and machine traction-grooved rollers dramatically limit vibration and tire slip! Test most production vehicles (up to 150 MPH and 700 Hp) on our smallest automotive dual-roller assembly. Larger diameter roll systems easily handle sustained higher speed testing at racecar power levels. (*Capacities are approximate, as they are primarily tire safety and traction limited – higher torque requires tie downs.)

Fix driveline problems that might never show up in the garage, like shifting issues, driveshaft vibration, brake squeal, bearing noises, brake shudder, exhaust rattles, etc. – without costly field testing.

Verify emissions under load with your existing, or our (optional) digitally integrated five-gas DYNOmite Exhaust Measurement System. Emission testing requires repeatable loading, on an absorption dyno. Forget using unloaded idle data to verify if repairs are in compliance. Send customers for state inspections with confidence.

Low profile, ramp loading allows installing our 8-1/2" through 20" roller units above ground – or in a driveway. Casters (on some models) let you roll it to a corner when not in use (just raise their anti-vibration leveling pads). No dedicated test bay, or digging up floors, required.

Rapid on-off set-up makes it practical to skip those old time-consuming road trips. Just drive it on, strap it down, hook up the tach (or use Smart Ratio™) and test – a full report prints out automatically.

Overdriven absorption units – handle low-rpm truck torque loads* that competitor’s light-duty 1:1

drives cannot match. Our high-capacity absorbers allow steady-state testing and servicing trucks in the same road-speed ranges that owners really operate them at. (*Capacities are approximate, as they are primarily tire safety and traction limited – higher torque requires adequate vehicle restraints.)

Dynamically balanced rolls, with massive axle shafting, dramatically limit vibration – even at higher speeds. Heavy- duty sealed bearings allow for extended-duration testing with low maintenance.

Measuring power under a controlled RPM load is simply vital for proper mapping of engine management systems and guess-free emissions work.

This requires a high-capacity absorber. Inertia-only dynos are unsuitable for this type of work, as such units cannot maintain a loaded MPH or RPM setting. An absorber allows running controlled RPM step or sweep Hp tests, so everything is under computer control – via the included Electronic Auto Load.

Front, Rear, Multi-Axle, and All Wheel Drive trucks can be tested on the appropriate model DYNOmite truck chassis dyno. Many allow front/rear torque-bias monitoring and support bidirectional mounting. Both electronically and mechanically coupled systems are available. We can even convert other manufacturers’ older, single-axle chassis dynamometers to add AWD capability and Electronic Axle Synchronization, at a fraction of the cost of a new system!

Larger diameter rolls are safer! Excessive strap-down forces, especially when combined with too-small roll diameters, can cause hidden tire damage. The FEA (finite element analysis) images (above) compare large-diameter and small-diameter rolls, under equivalent contact patch conditions. Those red hot-spots highlight the hidden cord overloading that occurs running smaller rolls under high loads. Note how thrust climbs the tires up onto the forward roll (of a tandem-roll pair). No wonder tire manufactures disclaim liability and warranty responsibility for tires abused on small rollers. Larger-diameter rolls better replicate the flat-earth that tires are actually designed to run on. Just drive it on, strap it down, hook up the tach (or use Smart Ratio™) and test – a full report prints out automatically.

Land & Sea’s Data Acquisition Dynamometer Conversions allow upgrading older analog and hydraulic dynamometers with state-of-the-art computerized data collection and engine control. DYNOmite data-acquisition computers, transducers, and control electronics combine to deliver a price/performance ratio formerly unheard of in professional dynamometer test systems. “Give your existing dynamometer a new lease on life.”

Affordable expansion upgrades (up to 112+ channels) include: fuel-flow and airflow turbines, brake- specific fuel consumption, brake-specific air consumption, air/fuel ratio, exhaust-gas temperature, engine-temperature thermistors, air temperature, humidity, barometric pressure, sparkplug thermocouple kits, RTDs, pressure transducers, 0-5 volt auxiliary inputs (for many wide-band air/fuel ratio sensors, knock sensors, etc.) and outputs, high-speed cylinder-pressure mapping, and both servo load and throttle control options. Like the DYNOmite itself, these upgrades won’t eat your entire testing budget.

Available torque sensor options include full-bridge (temperature-compensated) strain-gauge S-beam load cells, high-resolution pressure transducers, and wireless rotary-torque transducers. All of them are maintenance free and feature our semi-automatic (pushbutton) calibration of zero offset. Conversions can usually retain the system’s original torque sensor and display in parallel with the new electronics.

Forget inaccurate paper and pencil logging – throw out that DOS-based software and get professional one-person operation. Owners of older analog Clayton, Dynojet, Dyno Dynamics, Froude, Go Power, K & O, Maha, Maxwell, Mustang, Stuska, Sun Road-a-Matic, SuperFlow, etc. brakes and rolls may take advantage of most DYNOmite and DYNO-MAX features without purchasing new absorbers or engine stands.

torque, RPM, elapsed time, etc., while calculating Hp at up to 1,000 readings per second (that’s per channel, not just a total). The board’s computer can even be set to automatically apply Standard SAE correction factors for air temperature, barometric pressure, and relative humidity. This eliminates running engines to death while trying to manually record all the data. Handheld DYNOmite models display results on their LCDs and can print to an optional portable battery-powered printer. No prior computer knowledge is required to start testing and analyzing data like the pros.

DYNO-MAX Software option creates a full engine dynamometer lab console on your PC. Features include:

real-time trace-chart graph display, adjustable visual and voice limit warnings, pushbutton controls, user configurable analog and digital gauges, plus incredibly powerful post-test data analysis tools. (See web site for a full list of features.)

Integrate your PC by using DYNO-MAX with appropriate automated electronic load and throttle control hardware options for keyboard dyno control. Without special programming, operators can easily execute even complex race simulations and engine test cycles. No other dyno software adapts and expands so easily to virtually any level of testing sophistication.

Advanced standard features including: Smart Record™, real-time data dampening, spike filtering, playback data averaging, atmospheric correction, auto-zeroing, instant playback, and integral rev-limiter.

DYNO-MAX control functions include: water-brake, hydraulic, AC, or eddy-current absorber load control, throttle-position torque control, and switched relays to control fuel pump(s), engine starter, cell ventilation blowers, water supply valves, N 2 O injection, etc. Choose from “canned” cycles, or customize tests using its advanced custom automated-test-editor tool.

Electronic load and throttle control options – just push buttons to select the test RPM, or set a sweep rate and the DYNOmite’s own advanced PID algorithm runs the whole show – all hands free.

Inexpensively update that obsolete analog dyno for the new millennium. Computerization eliminates the need for two people to try and monitor the operation of your engine testing. It also eliminates observer bias from the results. Today’s front-runners are already scrutinizing every single line of their own dynamometer’s data; do not be left behind!

Radio modem telemetry is even available to broadcast real-time track data back to your race pit crew’s laptop.

Live-person technical phone support provides a significant advantage over other companies’ obnoxious voice-mail runarounds. Our standard hardware phone and e-mail support, plus access to the special DYNOmite owners 24/7 web support area, are all FREE!

Convert motor, transmission, or chassis dynamometers! The DYNOmite and DYNO-MAX team includes features to allow optimizing them for almost any type of power train testing. Whether you are restoring some old analog emissions rolling-road, building a new transmission dyno, measuring an electric or air-motor’s performance, upgrading a speedometer calibration tester, or secretly testing your own space-age transportation invention… we are ready to help you. A DYNOmite conversion can bring full load control and road-load simulations to your inertia dyno, or cylinder-pressure mapping to many 1960 vintage water-brake systems. It does not matter if you are monitoring 100 or 100,000+ RPM shaft speeds. We offer ¼ to 10,000 ft-lb load cells, and support multi-channel data collection rates from 200 to over 200,000 Hertz. If you are upgrading a dyno, you have found your solution.

(Other hydraulic, water, AC, and eddy-current absorber combinations are available to test engines from 1 to over 10,000 Hp.)

Sophisticated data-acquisition features that include:

Smart Record™, data dampening, spike filtering, playback-data time averaging, atmospheric correction, auto-zeroing, instant playback, and integral rev-limiter.

super-capacity (10,000 ft-lb) tandem configurations.

Load engines indefinitely, not limited to only a few seconds of flash inertial acceleration. (Water-brake absorbers require 5 gpm for every 100 continuous Hp.)*

“Pro” console upgrade includes a genuine Intel ® - equipped Dell PC and a 17" high-resolution LCD monitor. It is optimized for DYNO-MAX’s real-time color graphics. (See table for a longer list of features.)

Reduce field service problems by getting it right the very first time, while improving customer satisfaction. Uncovering turbo or injection system malfunction is no longer trial and error.

Low-cost and rapid installation are just two benefits of the standalone version’s unique design. For many applications this configuration allows testing right on the engine’s shipping crate. An expensive dyno cell is often not even required.

Easy test set-ups by mechanics and technicians with no dyno experience. Get quick horsepower plots of the entire torque vs. RPM curve. No prior experience with computers is needed. It can take less than an hour to

install, test, and output report data with the DYNOmite. Just mount the absorber and torque-tube adapter plate assembly onto your engine’s bell-housing (or couple a rolling cart-mounted engine to its docking station), hook up the wiring and hoses, and begin testing.

Automated load control is available with the optional electronic auto-load servo (high or ultra-flow) control valve. It replaces the standard manual-load control unit. Just push the buttons to select the operating RPM, or set a sweep rate and allow the DYNOmite’s advanced PID algorithms to run the whole test. The computer logs all data automatically. (Simultaneous electronic throttle control, via DYNO-MAX, is also an available option.)

Advanced options including: thermostatically controlled cooling towers, fuel-flow and airflow turbines, blowby sensors, weather station (for automatic atmospheric data), EGT (exhaust-gas temperature) thermocouple kits, pressure

transducers, fully digitally integrated five-gas exhaust analyzers, direct-mount smoke-opacity meters, temperature thermistors, auto-load and electronic throttle control, and more.

Land & Sea’s Air-Cooled Eddy-Current Absorber (brake) and Electronic Control kits offer an affordable way to build your own state-of-the-art, industrial-duty engine or chassis dynamometer. They are also ideal for restoring obsolete (or upgrading inertia-only) dynamometers. “Do you have a custom dynamometer application? We manufacture many eddy-current units in-house – so give us a call!”

DYNOmite Air-Cooled Eddy-Current Absorbers offer very quick load control, moderate inertia, and high specific load capacity, especially in the lower RPM working ranges of most industrial-type engines. For

Perfect for torque reaction cradles where the higher inertia of an electronic absorber (compared to that of a water brake) is not an issue. Our “Micro” and “Mini” DYNOmite Eddy-Current

Absorbers are equipped with an eccentric-cam mounting body that helps to easily adapt them to changes in the drive-gear, pulley, or sprocket-center distances.

Shaft, Flange, or NEMA Frame mounting choices are offered in various models. The keyed-shaft units are most commonly supported between a pair of pillow-block bearings. This allows reading the reaction torque via a load cell that has been linked to the absorber’s trunnioned frame. Alternatively, optional flat-flange models couple to matching bolt-pattern driveshaft U-joint assemblies. Larger absorbers have a set of mounting holes in their housings for fixing them to the dynamometer’s stand or to a reaction-cradle.

applications that do not require stall-speed loading, an air-cooled eddy-current absorber is usually the most cost-effective electric absorber you can buy. Its self-cooled rotors require no external water supply or resistor banks. It also costs less than our planetary-driven water brakes and allows far more design flexibility than hydraulic pumps. For those applications that demand higher RPM limits, lower system inertia, and/or temperature independence, we offer (slightly more expensive) liquid-cooled eddy-current absorbers.

120-volt and 240-volt (input) power supply/controls are

available to provide 96- or 192-volt DC PWM (pulse width modulated) output – which is suitable for

many DYNOmite or third-party absorber models. Loading when using these controls is adjustable – both manually (using either its panel knob or the built-in 0-10 volt analog control input) or automatically via the (non-analog) PID-controlled leads from the DYNOmite data-acquisition computer. Panel circuit breakers are matched to the customer’s application, protecting the absorber’s windings.

Special battery-powered (12-volt DC) eddy-current absorbers are available for your in-field service/testing applications. Everything, including the absorber, load control, and DYNOmite data-acquisition computer, can be run off of a large truck battery. Combine this with your laptop

Need parts for an old eddy-current dyno? As a manufacturer of eddy-current dyno absorbers, we can often repair otherwise obsolete units. Land & Sea does everything, from modernizing power supplies and controls to custom winding replacement coils for “Brand-X” dynamometers. Call for a quote, or help, in repairing your existing dyno’s hardware.

Custom hybrid configurations can be designed using a combination of both a fast electronic absorber, typically an AC motor for great low-end torque control, together with a large eddy-current absorber. The latter inexpensively adds testing power and torque capacity. Control of the pair is handled via DYNO-MAX “Pro.” While this complexity is only justified for some unique applications, such hybrids make it possible to cost-effectively build high- torque and faster-response dynamometers – than is practical using any other single-unit technology. An AC absorber can also add motoring ability. Please call for more information.

available with keyed shafts – in both
12-volt or 96-volt DC models.

High-speed spindle bearings and the absorber’s grease seals provide extra long life for extended industrial or OEM endurance-testing applications. Our larger eddy-current absorbers feature Zerk grease fittings for easier maintenance. Most of these units’ replacement bearings and their grease seals are available locally, and are engineered for

convenient in-field replacement – with conventional tools. These features are combined into a well-proven design

– and one which

strives to minimize both the cost and quantity of any, proprietary, moving wear parts. The end

result is that costly testing-equipment maintenance and downtime becomes

a non-issue.

Various shaft mounting choices are offered, including custom designs to your prints. The standard units may be supported between a pair of live high-speed pillow-block bearings. This allows reading the reaction torque via a load cell that is linked to the absorber’s trunnioned frame. Our precision (keyless) ring couplers may be used for mating to driveshafts – via disc or U-joint style assemblies. For the elimination of parasitic bearing losses, non=rotating trunnion- bosses (or reaction-mount options) are both also offered, making it convenient to adapt the absorber housings to your dynamometer’s engine stand, docking station frame, or reaction cradle/table. Sub- frames for mounting onto industrial T-slot bases are also available.

DYNOmite Liquid-Cooled Eddy-Current Absorbers offer millisecond-response load control, very low rotating inertia, and compact high-specific load capacity. Compared to water-brake absorbers, they are especially well suited for applications that require plenty of low RPM torque capacity – as do many industrial-type engines. For applications which do not require motoring or stall-speed (zero RPM) loading, our liquid-cooled eddy-current absorbers offer more cost-effective loading than an equivalent-capacity AC absorber (motor) and drive can. For applications that demand higher RPM limits, lower system inertia, and continuous-duty (temperature independence) – water-cooled eddy-current absorbers are the ideal solution.

We manufacture these absorbers as both single- and multi-rotor configurations, in a number of diameter (capacity) ranges. We cover your test needs for everything from tiny 20,000-RPM two strokes to 1,000-Hp diesels. Rotors are added to increase power capacity, without limiting peak RPM, while rotor diameter is increased for boosting low-RPM torque capacity. We completely manufacture these units in-house; machining and balancing their rotors, winding custom-voltage coils, and assembling the ideal rotor stackup – to best match your application’s load curve. Their modular design also allows the possibility

of upgrading system capacity – should your power requirements increase.

120-volt and 240-volt (input) power supply/ controls are available to provide 96- or 192-volt DC PWM (pulse width modulated) output – which is suitable for most of the DYNOmite or third-party liquid-cooled absorber models. Loading when using these controls is adjustable – both manually (using either its panel knob or the built-in 0-10 volt analog control input) or automatically via the (non-analog) PID-controlled leads from the DYNOmite data-acquisition computer. Panel circuit breakers are matched to the customer’s application, protecting the absorber’s windings.

combination of a smaller AC absorber (for very fast torque control and/or motoring) with a higher-capacity liquid-cooled eddy-current absorber. The eddy current inexpensively adds additional loading power capacity – compared to a similar capacity AC absorber alone. Control of the pair is handled via DYNO-MAX “Pro.” While its complexity is typically only justified for some sophisticated high-output applications, hybrids make it possible to cost effectively build lower-inertia and faster-response dynamometers, with motoring capability, than can be done using any single technology alone.

High-speed ceramic spindle bearings and synthetic grease provide extra-long life for extended industrial or OEM endurance testing applications. These hybrid ceramic bearings are also immune to the extra-heat buildup which occurs when steel bearings are rotated within a magnetic field. Such eddy-loss heating will destroy conventional bearings in a relatively short period of time. Consequently, hybrid ceramic bearings are a standard feature in all of our DYNOmite liquid-cooled eddy-current absorbers units. Teflon lip seals are also used – to minimize wear of both the seals and the stainless- steel shafts that they run on. We combine all of this with high-speed synthetic Kluber Isofle NBU grease, to help ensure very- long service intervals.

Land & Sea’s DYNOmite Kart Dynamometers – modular dynamometer labs for the school, kart race shop, or track. Dynos that mount easily, with or without engine removal. Precision, strain-gauge torque readings provide repeatable brake engine horsepower. Integral computer calculates, displays, and stores RPM, Hp, torque, time, etc. – data-acquisition system also doubles as a sophisticated on-track recorder. “Provides actual torque and computerized Hp data – not just hydraulic-pressure conversion ‘guesstimating’ or flash inertia-only readings!”

How does it work? The DYNOmite’s absorber is actually a very inefficient centrifugal water pump – with a variable flow control. The more water provided to the absorber, the more power this pump requires. It acts as a brake on the crankshaft. The resultant absorber housing’s torque and engine RPM are monitored by computer. During a test, the dyno operator regulates the engine’s RPM by adjusting supply water via the absorber’s “load control valve” – to slowly sweep it through the desired range. The DYNOmite calculates horsepower via the standard formula:

Hp = Torque (in foot pounds) x RPM / 5,252.

including ventilation, are also available. Above is a shot of
one of Land & Sea’s in-house small-engine training cells.

Patented torque transducer technology is moment-length independent. Its temperature- compensated strain gauges, which measure true shaft torque and power, require no recalibration for changes in the support geometry. This simplifies fabrication of your own engine test stand or in-vehicle mounts. Pushbutton, semi-automatic offset for the zero calibration point is also standard.

30+ Hp* capacity with our standard toroidal- flow water-brake absorber (or 60+ Hp* using high-torque rotor). The toroid’s ultra-low volume design provides control stability and response unmatched by simple vaned brakes. Loads typical kart engines from a garden hose water supply.* (Many other size water or eddy-current absorbers available to test virtually any capacity engine.)

Standard dyno kits include: 7" toroidal-flow water-brake absorber (with 5" high-RPM rotor), electronic torque-arm transducer, engine load control, DYNOmite handheld data-acquisition computer, AC power supply, stainless-braided hoses, magnetic RPM sensor, data wiring harness, and protective carrying case.

DYNOmite data-acquisition electronics eliminate “wishful” paper and pencil hand-logging. The DYNOmite computer records true Hp, torque, RPM, elapsed time, etc. (at up to 1,000 readings per second) while automatically applying SAE correction factors for air temperature, barometric pressure, and relative humidity. Estimating power from hydraulic-pressure conversion charts is not required. Neither is running an engine to death to get a full test curve. Keypad-model DYNOmites display results on their LCDs, and can print to an optional portable ASCII parallel printer.

Direct crankshaft mounting on most engines eliminates any “factoring” for drive-train losses. The 5" (or optional 7") rotor’s arbor fits directly onto standard ¾"-diameter 3 /16"-keyed shafts. An optional 9" absorber fits 3° (1:10) and 4° (1:7.5) tapered PTOs. If clearance is available, engines can be tested right in the vehicle’s chassis – using an optional rear-axle adapter.

DYNO-MAX Software option creates a full engine dynamometer lab console on your PC.

Features include: real-time trace-chart graph display, EGT bar graph, inertia compensation, user- adjustable visual and voice limit warnings, pushbutton controls, and user configurable analog and digital gauge ranges. With the optional electronic auto-load control (or electronic throttle) you can easily generate and execute complex race track road-load simulations, engine tests, or break-in cycles. Setting up a test is as simple as making a few mouse clicks, to set the test RPM points and desired sweep rate. Then, just allow the DYNOmite’s PID algorithms to run the whole show. Marine “Prop-Shaft” Dynamometers

DYNOmite T M Marine “Prop-Shaft” Dynamometers Quick to use No PSI tables Reads in true Hp

Quick to use No PSI tables Reads in true Hp No oil tank Light and mobile One-technician operation Repeatable Priority support Affordable*

Land & Sea’s DYNOmite marine “prop-shaft” dynamometers are ideally suited to testing outboards and stern-drives right on the boat. These lightweight dynos simply mount in place of the propeller. Accurate, strain-gauge torque readings provide actual horsepower. Its integral computer calculates, displays, and stores RPM, Hp, torque, time, etc. “Provides prop-shaft Hp readings directly – without hydraulic look-up chart ‘guesstimating’.”

Standard dyno kit includes: 13" toroidal- flow water-brake absorber, heavy-duty electronic torque arm transducer (can be used with either CW or CCW rotation), engine load control, DYNOmite LCD equipped handheld data-acquisition computer, AC power supply/recharger, a set of prop-shaft mounting hardware, data wiring harness, manual, stainless-braided hoses (with an anti-scratch covering), and protective carrying case.

an anti-scratch covering), and protective carrying case. DYNOmite data-acquisition electronics eliminate manual

DYNOmite data-acquisition electronics eliminate manual recording or estimating power from crude hydraulic-pressure conversion charts. The DYNOmite records true Hp, torque, RPM, elapsed time, etc. (at up to 1,000 readings per second) while automatically applying SAE correction factors for air temperature, barometric pressure, and relative humidity. Results display on the DYNOmite’s LCD and can be printed to an optional portable ASCII parallel printer.

Patented torque transducer technology is accurate, and independent of moment-arm length changes. So, it requires no recalibration (or software corrections) for changes in cavitation plate height. Waterproof strain gauge allows submerged lake or tank testing. Pushbutton (semi-automatic) offset for the zero calibration point is also standard.

400+ Hp* capacity with our standard 13" toroidal water-brake absorber. Loads most marine engines from your existing water supply.* (A dual stator absorber with our Siamese rotor is available to test engines up to 800+ Hp.)

Direct prop-shaft mounting (by a single technician) onto most BIA splines with the included (or optional) adapters. System can be battery powered for outdoor yard or service call operation, so an expensive shop-ventilation system is not needed.

Precision designed and manufactured for strength, accuracy, and reliability. Each water absorption brake, heavy-duty torque arm, load-valve, etc. is beautifully CNC machined from anodized aircraft billet aluminum and heat-treated stainless steel. Even the fasteners are stainless, for the maximum submerged corrosion resistance.

Advanced standard features including:

Smart Record™, torque auto-zeroing, data dampening, spike filtering, playback data averaging, atmospheric correction, instant playback, and integral rev-limiter.

Used by many OEM training centers and technical schools, so many outboard and stern-drive technicians already know how to run (and prefer using) the DYNOmite. Just owning a DYNOmite enhances your own service department’s technical image among potential employees and customers. It isolates problems that the old-fashioned hydraulic pressure-chart “dynos” cannot even begin to pick up.

How does it operate? The lightweight DYNOmite absorber installs, like a prop, on most 50 Hp outboards through 502ci stern drives. During testing, you sweep the desired RPM range by adjusting its load valve. This controls the water level inside the absorber – which changes its rotor’s load (like having an adjustable RPM test tank wheel). The DYNOmite’s computer records the resultant torque at the absorber’s housing (along with the RPM) to calculate: Hp = Torque (in foot pounds) x RPM / 5,252.

DYNO-MAX Software option creates a full engine-dynamometer lab console on your PC. Features include: real-time trace graph display, EGT bar graph, full inertia compensation, adjustable visual and voice limit warnings, quick pushbutton controls, and user-configurable analog and digital gauge ranges. You can even print color reports and graphs to hand out to service customers.

Automate your testing by installing DYNO-MAX with an appropriate auto-load servo or electronic throttle control. This allows keyboard setting of test RPM and load. Without special programming, you can easily create self-running engine tests or extended- duration break-in cycles. Troubleshoot problems that take time to show up.

Cut non-billable hours trying to isolate intermittent problems.
It is not just that troubleshooting time is often slashed in half,
your mechanics stay in the shop instead of out hauling boats
around to the lake. Customers that balk at paying for your
on-water diagnostic time willingly pay for dyno testing. With
DYNO-MAX software, you can even provide them with
“before and after” power graphs and reports, documenting the
results of your service work.
One marine dealer’s experience: “After 15 years of use and
well over 3,000 pulls (some in excess of 9,000 RPM) we have
not experienced a single failure with our DYNOmite absorber.
And, its light weight allows one technician to set it up and do a
pull – in less than three minutes. In contrast, our old hydraulic
dyno needed two men to wrestle with the pump, was limited to
5,000 RPM, had regular coupler failures, and its hydraulic
hose bursts were environmental catastrophes!” – Toni Marine
Unlike heavy and inherently low-RPM hydraulic
“dynos,” a single technician can easily mount the
lightweight DYNOmite to test high-Hp race engines.
Dynoing pays its own way and the most professional
marine dealers typically charge an extra premium for
all of their dynamometer
diagnostic work. Besides
being a great service tool,
successful service managers
find that just the displaying
of the brake in their service
department allows them to
command the higher labor
rates, shop wide, needed to
operate profitably!
