Opened her first restaurant at the age of five,

where she sold fresh focaccia she made using cups of flour
lifted from her mother’s kitchen and
thyme gently borrowed from her father’s garden.

Once suspended from school for starting a Burrata fight.
Claimed that the cheese’s similarity to snowballs inspired her.

Loves nothing more than introducing new people
to the food, drinks and culture of her home.

Never met a plate she couldn’t fill
or a glass she could leave empty.

Became known worldwide as “The Kissing Primadonna”

after she left the stage in the middle of a performance
to give an impassioned embrace to her conductor.

Her affairs with famous musicians, actors, writers
and a few unnamed world leaders
were as legendary as her singing.

Never married.

Lives in a villa in Lazio with an ornate topiary maze—
where men are rumored to get lost so that they never leave.

Appeared to go completely gray at the age of 22…
although records are unclear as to whether her hair truly turned white.
Some say she was just consistently covered in a light layer of flour.

Envied for the top secret blend of spices she added to her pasta fillings.
Revealed the contents of the blend to Sofia “Mama” DaMario,
her favorite daughter, on her deathbed.

If her 36 grandchildren don’t clean their plates

at her weekly Sunday dinners,
they’re made to clean the chicken coop.

Talks so loudly with her hands that people keep a safe distance
of at least two feet to avoid accidental injury.

Lives within a four block radius of all of her sons
and insists on taking charge of their kitchens—
much to the chagrin of their wives.
Her favorite saying? “La famiglia è sacra.”

Won control of the family vineyard

from his older brother in a bet over who could grow
the taller vines in a single season.

Claimed that the Chianti made from his grapes
had the power to make even the most left-footed man
dance the Tarantella in triple time.

Requested that his ashes be spread around the vineyard—
because the richness of his spirit should not be confined underground.

One of history’s most talented forgers,

he created hand-drawn replicas of Italian currency.

The Italian government was never able to prosecute him,
as he didn’t technically try to pass the money off as real himself.
He simply traded the small artworks for goods and services.

Immortalized Mama DaMario, who he called
“Mia Splendida Donna,” in over 300 of his works.
Remained devoted to her until his death—
circumstances unknown.

La Storia della Sorella Agrodolce

TH E B IT TER S W EET S I S TER’ S S TO RY

Two households, both alike in Italy,

In the fair countryside where we lay our scene.
T H E B I T T ER S W EE T S I S T ER’ S S TO RY

One family the Salimbene of Sangiovese.
The other Negroni of Vermouths.

As vintages fought spirits for favor of table and tongue,
So did the farmers strife expound.

From forth the loins of these two foes
A pair of star-crossed lovers take their leaves.

Carina, the little darling daughter loved—
She doth dream of place unknown
Beyond border of farm and table topped.

Young Angelo, the angel boy, lived for wind
Upon his wings. Until at harvest ball
He spied the fair Carina dance on by.

Together they sped from house and home,
To travel ‘cross the world and race
The great Romeo car well known.

Their misadventured piteous depart
Did with their runaway bury their parents’ strife.

But never again did they return
To witness the expanse of their family’s love.

And never was a story of more woe
Than this of Carina and her Angelo.
