14-slot packet-optical shelf assembly (NTK503SA)

This release of 6500 supports the 14-slot packet-optical shelf assembly. The
14-slot packet-optical shelf combines functionality from both the 6500 14-slot
converged optical shelf assembly (NTK503ADE5) and the 32-slot packet-
optical shelf assembly (NTK603AAE5 or NTK603AB). Along with the 32-slot
shelf (22U in height), this 13U shelf is designed to support both SONET/SDH
TDM switching as well as a switched packet-OTN switching when equipped
with a packet-OTN cross-connect fabrics.

The packet-optical shelf assembly is dimensionally identical to the 14-slot

optical shelf (with attached cooling fan unit) and converged optical shelf
assemblies (see Figure 3-2 on page 3-8 for dimensions). Similar to the 14-slot
optical shelf and converged optical shelf assemblies supported in previous
releases, this packet-optical shelf assembly can be used in applications where
Photonic, Broadband or TDM optical services (SONET/SDH) will be deployed.

The packet-optical shelf (NTK503SA) reduces cost/complexity of sparing

since all the new deployments can use many circuit packs and common
equipment used in previous 14-slot shelf types.

Compared to the 14-slot converged optical shelf, the packet-optical shelf

• features higher-density connectors in the cross-connect slots (slots 7 and
8) which support 40G of traffic between each of the 12 service slots and
the fabrics in this release and scaling to 50G+/slot in a future release. Due
to this new backplane connector, slots 7 and 8 of the packet-optical shelf
are not compatible with Broadband circuit packs or cross-connect circuit
packs that otherwise can be used in slot 7 and 8 of a 14-slot converged
shelf. However slots 7 and 8 of the packet-optical shelf can be equipped
with specific photonics circuit packs or cross-connect circuit packs that are
designed for use in this shelf (see Table 2-25 on page 2-175 for the list of
those circuit packs).
• supports all the mate-to-mate and triplet backplane connections for slots
1-6 and 9-14 for use in Broadband configuration.
• in addition to supporting the 40A and 60A Power Input Cards (maximum
power of 1599W, 1999W, and 2399W respectively), a 2x50A Power Input
Card can be used for 2x40A and 2x50A applications (maximum power of
3199W and 3999W respectively).
• supports existing High Flow Cooling Fans as well as "High flow Type 3"
variants which provide increased cooling capacity for use in high
performance applications (when the shelf is equipped with a compatible
Power Input Cards such as the 2x50A variant).

module (Type 3) (NTK507MS) in a 14-slot packet-optical shelf (NTK503SA) requires that the shelf is
also equipped with 2x50A Power Input Card (NTK505DS).
Note 6: Only supported on converged optical (NTK503ADE5) and converged optical/rear electrical
(NTK503CDE5) shelf types.
