Suicide Prevention Awareness Month: Leadership role

By Pfc. Hong Moo-sun
USAG Yongsan Public Affairs

YONGSAN GARRISON — September is National Suicide

Prevention Awareness Month, and the Army Substance
Abuse Program wants to make Soldiers, civilians and
community members aware of this issue and let them
know that suicides can be prevented, focusing on the role
of leaders.
Many of today’s young leaders were brought up in the heavy
deployment cycle of two wars. They have spent most of their
time either in the field training for deployment, deployed,
or at home on leave following a deployment.
They are no longer accustomed to the processes, paperwork
and inspections that made up the preceding two decades
of garrison-oriented leadership and soldiering. Some may
have lost those garrison leadership skills, such as health
and welfare inspections, that took care of troops in that
environment.
During their installation visits, the task force found that
many of the administrative and discipline processes in place
in garrison are not being used, due either to ignorance or
choice.
For example, if a unit is readying for deployment, some
commanders are not sending their Soldiers through military

lined up at the PX to meet and greet the former NFL player.

the brunt of the storm with $7.8 million in
damage to 112 buildings, and between 800

a newly introduced competition. Both U.S.

played during the matches.
A more traditional sports category, jok-

this year. Jok-gu can be best described as a

by the Korean Army in 1966, it has remained
popular ever since.

Daegu Community, Good neighbors

turn out for Labor Day Open House
DAEGU GARRISON — U.S. Army Garrison Daegu hosted their ninth annual Open
House celebration Saturday at Camp Walker’s Heliport, H-805. Normally held in May ,
this year construction and the 60th Anniversary of the Korean War pushed he event to
September. Several thousand guests from off- as well as on-post took part in the festivities,
highlighted by stirring performances by the Republic of Korea 2nd Operational Command
Honor Guard Drill Team and some high-flying Tae Kwan Do performers.
Displays of tactical military vehicles and aircraft from both U.S. and ROK Armies
filled the heliport tarmac, and despite the scorching hot temperatures all proved extremely
popular. Visitors seemed particularly interested in the Patriot Missile System from 2-1
