THEME FOR THE DAY: The third covenant in this year’s Lenten readings is the central
one of Israel’s history: the gift of the law to those God freed from slavery. The Ten
Commandments are one of the chief parts of the catechism, a core piece of baptismal
instruction. They begin with the statement that because God alone has freed us from
the powers that oppressed us, we are to let nothing else claim first place in our lives.
When Jesus throws the merchants out of the temple, he is defending the worship of
God alone and rejecting the ways commerce and profit-making can become our gods.
WE WELCOME ALL who are in worship this morning, especially those who might be
our guests. If you are looking for a Church Home, we ask that you consider Parkway
and speak with the Pastor. We are in the Epiphany Season leading us toward the
Season of Lent.
CALL TO WORSHIP
L / Holy God, through your Son you have called us to live faithfully and act
courageously. Keep us steadfast in your covenant of grace, and teach us the wisdom
that comes only through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with
you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
C / Amen.

Scripture Thoughts
In the season of Lent, God’s people are invited to adopt a spirit of sacrifice in
preparation for a new kind of freedom. This is not a season of coercion. Rather, it is a
time of hearing the holy beckon from quiet corners—a time when we are called, gently,
to brush aside our worldly preoccupations so that we might make room for what is to
come. This week’s readings help us consider some of the things we might clear away.
The story of Jesus in the temple at Passover goes right to the heart of these disciplines.
Just as Jesus clears away practices that obscure the real purposes of the temple, so
does Lenten discipline seek to remove destructive forces from us. The “Father’s house”
is a place for prayer and praise, gathering and learning, scripture reading and
preaching, not for coercion and bargains. Angry temple authorities demand Jesus’
credentials. His response comes in metaphor, of course, because the truth cannot be
said outright. The truth is God’s power to make life even from death. The conditions for
that resurrected power, like clearing out money-changers, set boundaries between what
is life-giving and what destroys.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
THE SECOND READING: Christ crucified, the wisdom
of God
1 Corinthians 1:18-25
18
The message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who
are being saved it is the power of God.19For it is written,“I will destroy the wisdom of the
wise, and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart.” 20Where is the one who is
wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish
the wisdom of the world?21For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God
through wisdom, God decided, through the foolishness of our proclamation, to save
those who believe.22For Jews demand signs and Greeks desire wisdom, 23but we
proclaim Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, 24but to
those who are the called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the
wisdom of God.25For God’s foolishness is wiser than human wisdom, and God’s
weakness is stronger than human strength.
APOSTLES’ CREED
I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in
Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and
was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he
ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will
come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy
catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the
resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
L / The house of God is not a marketplace for buying and selling. It is a house of
prayer, a place of healing and restoration, a place where we bring before God our
provisions to be used for present needs. Let us bring our tithes and offerings to
God.
PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING
L / O Lord our God, we want to follow all your commandments – to love only you, not
worshiping the things of the world; to love our neighbor freely, not desiring for ourselves
something they possess. Accept these offerings, we pray, and teach us to be generous,
giving fully of ourselves that we may truly be the Body of Christ in this world.

OUR SESSION
President - Mrs. Jean Olson
Mr. Al Borovich
God of heaven and earth, I listen this morning for the sound of your glory: in the songs
of birds, in quiet conversations that begin the day, in easy laughter among friends, in
sunlight’s warmth, pattering rain, or silent snowfall. Give me ears to hear your glory in its
many forms. Give me eyes to see your glory in its many guises.
Throughout this day, I, too, will proclaim your glory, your grace, and your love so that I
may be a part of the chorus of praise that stretches to the ends of the earth. In Christ’s
name I pray. Amen.
God of freedom, I thank you for claiming me as your own and for setting me in the midst
of the community of faith. Today the news was filled with stories of people who do not
live according to your commandments, with grievous results. Lives are shattered as
your ancient tablets of stone are broken again and again. And I struggle, too, in my own
ways, to live before you and my neighbors in faithfulness, generosity, and love. As the
day comes to an end, I pray for forgiveness for myself and for this weary world,
confident of your grace and mercy. Send your gift of Sabbath rest, and let me sleep in
peace as, over and around me, night declares to night your power and glory. In Jesus’
name I pray. Amen
