Context and environment

The British Council Teaching Centres in Saudi Arabia provide English language training in Riyadh, Jeddah and
Al Khobar to thousands of young Saudi men and women each year in our own premises and off-site at
companies and in partner training institutes. All centres have public English courses in their teaching centres
and deliver off-site training to corporate clients, which vary from government ministries to private companies.
All classrooms are equipped with latest facilities including IWBs, digital courseware and internet connectivity.
There is huge demand for English in this fast growing and dynamic economy, and we are expanding our
operations around the Kingdom.
There are very good opportunities for suitably qualified teachers to undertake IELTS and Cambridge Main
Suite examining, which is paid fairly well by network standards, and, from time to time, our Examinations
department recruit and train new examiners. There is opportunity for overtime work.
In Riyadh, the Men’s and Women’s Teaching Centres have more than tripled in size overall since 2010, with
the addition of new classrooms. The Men’s Centre has 16 classrooms in a single site and the Women’s Centre
has 14 classrooms over two sites. The Men’s and Women’s sites are located nearby. Around 1,000 men and
800 women attend public courses each term, studying General English, IELTS preparation, Conversation and
Business English. Both centres have recently launched teacher training workshops, open to external teachers.
There is also a programme of off-site corporate teaching for males and females, including in partner premises.
Young Learner courses have expanded since their launch in September 2012 and there is both on-site and off-
site young learner teaching. Both centres also offer public CELTAs. There are good opportunities for suitably
qualified teachers to undertake IELTS and Cambridge Main Suite examining, which is paid fairly well by
network standards, and, from time to time, our Examinations department recruit and train new examiners.
There is also often opportunity for overtime work.
In Jeddah, Men's and Women's sections are located in the same building, with 13 classrooms in total. Male
and female teachers share the teachers’ room, although onsite classes remain segregated. Around 1,000
students attend courses each term, studying General English and IELTS Preparation. There’s a growing Young
Learner programme. There’s a growing off-site corporate programme. Jeddah has an established CELTA
programme.
In Al Khobar, there has also been significant growth over the last few years and there are currently over 500
students in public courses. It is the smallest of the three centres, with 4-5 classrooms, a few of which are in a
partner location nearby. There is also an off-site corporate programme. Expansion with a second branch is

expected within the next two years. The Centre is intending to deliver young learner courses, possibly through
partner premises.
