REPRODUCTION HEALTH AND THE PERFORMANCE OF EARLY MARRIAGE

ABSTRACT

Background: Early marriage in Indonesia still exist especially in the rural areas. Population
Research Center of Padjajaran University (UNPAD) in collaboration with Indonesian
population and family information network (BKKBN) West Java reported that the low level
of education and culture are the background of this problem to appear. The lack of both
sexual education and family life supported with the custom of society regarding the shame of
being spinster increase the number of teen pregancy and early marriage. Based on the Data on
Indonesia Population Survey(SDKI) 2007, in some areas, one-third marriage was made by
the couple under the age of 16 years. The number of early marriage cases in Indonesia
reaches up to 50 million people with an average age of marriage of 19.1 years. in East Java,
South Kalimantan, Jambi, and West Java, the consecutive number of early marriages
occurrences by 39.4%, 35.5%, 30.6% and 36%. Even in some rural areas, marriages, are
often done soon as the girls got the first period.

Purpose: the acknowledgement regarding the correlation between young womens’


knowledge level on reproduction health and the performance of early marriage at Dusun
Manis, mertapada village, Cirebon Regency, West Java province by 2013

Research methods: This research is analytic -correlative method by using cross sectional
approach. The research takes place on Dusun Manis, mertapada village, Cirebon Regency,
West Java province. There are 88 young women respondents, minimal sample was used to
take the sample. The data collection was done using questionnaires, while the data analysis
was done by using SPSS program computerized version 16.

Result: The proportion of young women who perform early marriage with elementary school
level of education is 69.4%. While, the proportion of young women who perform early
marriage with less knowledge about reproduction health is 48.3%.

Conclusion: There is significant correlation between the level of adolescent knowledge on


reproductive health and the performance of early marriage.
