End of Story for Used Book Sales
The Jacksonville Friends of the Library,
(JFOL) a non-profit that has held used
book sales for fifteen years, announced its
decision to terminate the popular sales.
In a written statement, JFOL’s Joan Avery
said, “Jacksonville Friends of the Library
will no longer be sponsoring Book
Sales. This has been an important way
to support our local branch, but we no
longer have a way to dispose of the books
that don’t sell.”
JFOL had held sales since 1995,
originally using profits to pay for
extended library hours as well as other
library materials. In a follow up with
the Review, Avery noted that, “Since the
library district bond issue was passed, the
book sale profits were then used to fund
programs for both adults and children,
and to support the popular Summer
Reading Program. And, we also paid for
additional furniture.”
Typical sales netted from $900-$1100
per sale and attracted hundreds of buyers.
However, Avery said disposing of unsold
books is now the main reason for ending
the sales. “We need to dispose of the
unsold books after each sale because we
don’t have room to store them in our

Another disposal option has also
become untenable. Avery says the FOJL
had been boxing and shipping unsold
books to Better World Book, who would
then sell through an online site. However,
that entity is now requiring the library
group to scan each book in advance of
shipping, to determine if the book has
any value online. Avery says, “Better
World isn’t able to recycle unsold books
as easily as in the past…and even if we
had enough volunteers to do the required
scanning, we would still have to get rid
of the books they didn’t want.”
The Jacksonville Friends of the Library
plans to remain intact, Joann Avery
concludes, “and is now searching for
new volunteers to step up and decide
how we can continue to support our
local branch.”

 Mary Ann Harris Chambers – Survivor

In the mid-1800s, the promise of gold and free land lured fortune seekers and settlers to the
newly-formed Oregon Territory. They were soon followed by merchants who amassed their
own wealth selling supplies to the miners and farmers. This ongoing series shares the stories of
these pioneers and their times.
With women today finding their voices
and power by sharing their experiences,
organizing, marching, demonstrating,
and seeking political office, a look at some
powerful pioneer women seems in order.
A woman’s role was considerably
different in the 19th Century. It was a
“man’s world.” But while subject to
male dominance, women usually ruled
the home, considered by society as their
“natural sphere.” Some prevailed in both
worlds. Women like suffragette Josephine
Martin Plymale (Jacksonville Review,
October 2016) were natural born leaders.
Some like hotelier Madame Jeanne
DeRoboam Holt parlayed their “talents”
into survival and success (Jacksonville
Review, March 2017). Some like teacher
Jane McCully
(Jacksonville Review,
July and August 2016)
found their strength by
rising to an occasion
and addressing life
head on.
Mary Ann Harris
Chambers falls in
the latter category,
responding to
challenging
circumstances with
courage, bravery, and
endurance.
She was born
Mary Ann Young on
Christmas Day in
1820 in Knox County,
Tennessee. She grew
up near Lafayette,
Missouri, where her
family moved when
she was small. We
know little about her heritage, however,
both Tennessee and Missouri were still
frontier at that time, so most likely she
came from a family of farmers. In 1843
she married farmer George Washington
Harris. A year later a daughter, Ann
Sophia, was born, followed two years
later by their son David.
Learning of the free land to be had
in the Oregon Territory, the family
crossed the Oregon-California Trail in
1853, settling the following spring on a
homestead on Louse Creek (now known
as Harris Creek) about eight miles north
of Grants Pass. The site provided open
land which Harris proposed to use in
the production of grain and vegetables.
Its proximity to the Trail afforded a
ready market for all kinds of produce.
There the Harris family proposed to
carve their fortunes.
However, this was not to be.
Where the native Indians had initially
been helpful, even welcoming to early
settlers, they became increasingly
hostile as more and more settlers
poured into the region, usurping
Indian lands and treating the natives
as subservient. There were also those
who believed “the only good Indian is
a dead Indian.” Such was the setting for
the Rogue Indian Wars of 1852 to 1856.
On the morning of October 9, 1855,
George Harris was engaged in splitting
logs for fencing, and Mary Ann was
preparing to do the family washing.
Sophie was busy inside, and David had
spent the night at a neighbor’s house.
When Harris became aware of a band of
Indians in war paint, he hurriedly left his
task and walked rapidly to the house.
Although Harris was unaware of the
fact, braves returning from a hunting trip
had discovered the wanton massacre by
settlers of some 80 old men, women, and
children at their encampment on the Rogue
River two days before. Infuriated, they
had embarked on a bloody trail of reprisal
killing pioneer families and burning their
homes. Harris purportedly became a target
because he had helped a muleskinner steal
a young Takelma Indian woman.
Harris managed to seize his rifle but
was mortally wounded while closing
the door of the cabin. Sophie, in the
excitement of the moment rushed
out the front door, where she was
shot through the right arm between
the shoulder and elbow. She rapidly
retreated. Harris, while clinging to life,
told Mary Ann to bar the doors and
load the guns—a rifle, a shotgun and
two pistols. She replied that she never

only to capture them.
At any rate, the standoff continued
until dawn.
Shortly after sunrise a volunteer militia
arrived and the Indians fled. When Mary
Ann recognized their uniforms, she
carried Sophie to meet them. The two
were worn, haggard, covered with blood,
and blackened with powder—scarcely
recognizable. Major Fitzgerald, the head of
the militia, is purported to have exclaimed,
“My God! Are you white women?”
The militia carried the two to

Jacksonville businessman and town

Ann and Sophie no longer had a home.
Despite several searches, David was
never seen nor heard from again and was
presumed dead. So in exchange for room
and board for herself and Sophie, Mary
Ann cared for Love’s frail and ailing
mother until her death in 1859. Margaret
Love became the first person buried in
the Jacksonville cemetery—by special
dispensation of the town’s trustees since
the cemetery had not officially opened.
The following year, one week after
her sixteenth birthday, Sophie Harris
married John Love.

History: The Charley Brothers
In the 1840s, explorers, miners and
adventure-seekers came through the
Rogue Valley, followed by settlers drawn
by fertile land and temperate climates.
Despite the hard, primitive way of life,
the strongest stayed and carved out their
new lives. Patsy Charley-Edwards tells
the story of one of these families—the
Charley Brothers (Floyd, Leland and
Claus), and the Brownsboro Ranch they
started. On Wednesday, March 7, noon-

“Those Thrilling Days of Yesteryear”
I know a young man who was recently
visiting who needed to pick-up two
weeks of work in order to earn money
to return home. When the time came for
him to be picked-up and taken to the job,
he became flustered because he couldn’t
find his cellphone and then decided
not to go to work until he found it.
Consequently, he didn’t report for work
until the following day. In his world,
that cellphone was more important than
gainful employment.
Cellphone technology has
revolutionized our lives! Overnight
we have become used to the idea that
all communication must be instant.
Figures vary depending upon the source,
but the average person checks their
cellphone 85 times per day. Cellphone
“junkies” touch their cellphone more
than 5,400 times a day. Though I have
trouble understanding their accuracy,
these figures are from a research study
conducted in July 2016. If true, it would
seem we have become slaves to the very
same technology that was supposed to
improve our lives.
Remember a simpler time? We had
a theater of the mind called radio. No
cellphones, desktop computers, or even
television. There were telephones, but
neither my family nor our friends had one,
as we were all unable to afford the 2 or 3
dollars a month. We used pay phones at
the street corner or neighborhood stores.
A local call was a nickel, but even that was
a lot when people were buying cigarettes
at a penny apiece.
Of course, science and technology have
replaced pay phones with cellphones.
The slide rule is replaced by the simplest
of computers. And newspapers,
magazines, and retail stores are under

home online shopping. But to go back?
We could no more go back to street
pay phones than we could to horses
and carriages. Because of technology,
we can pick up our cellphone and call
almost anywhere, transmit printed
information at the push of a button and
seek information by simply asking our
cellphone a question. Isn’t technology
wonderful? Not always! There’s always
a downside.
How many times have you left your
cellphone somewhere and can’t find it
or asked your spouse to call you so you
can locate your cellphone? And why is
this a problem? Because we have been
conditioned to believe we MUST have
that cellphone nearby! It might as well be
grafted onto our skin.
Then there is the feeling like no other
when the thing goes off when it shouldn’t,
like in church as mine did, with the Pastor
in the middle of a superb sermon.
And the cost for all this delightful
convenience? Why, the companies must
think our incomes equal that of U.S.
Senators! But, like a bad habit, texting
and web-surfing grow on us to the point
where unlimited use and unlimited
charges are the only answer. In 2011
there were 327 million cellphones in
America for 315 million people! In 2013
the average Verizon user paid $148 per
month. At only $100 per cellphone that
comes to 32 Billion and 700 million
dollars per month. Per month! Ouch!
Still, I confess, I’m a cellphone junkie
and admit I’m not ready to heed those
words at the beginning of every Lone
Ranger radio broadcast, “Return with us
now to those thrilling days of yesteryear.”
I’m too busy texting.

Town Hall Meeting on Police
Department Funding—Be sure to attend a
Town Hall meeting to learn what's going
on with Police Department funding. Staff
will be presenting information on current
service levels and funding needs/options
for our community. Your attendance and

Recycling Alert—At the February 6
meeting, representatives from Rogue
Disposal and Recycling (RDR) updated
council on the state of recycling
in Jacksonville and surrounding
communities. Please read an important
guest column by Laura Leebrick and
Gary Penning of RDR explaining the
current situation and learn what can and
can’t be recycled.
Charting a New Year—Council
approved the 2018 Organizational Chart,
spelling out the flow of city staff positions
as well as the functional structure for
committees and commissions. Updates
include the addition of the to-be-
formed CCI, the “Committee for Citizen
Involvement.” During discussion,
Councilor Criss Garcia urged staff and
council to begin planning for needed
staffing changes that will occur when
current City Administrator/Public Works
Director Alvis retires. Alvis, who holds
both posts at this time, will likely retire
in the next 4-6 years. As such, Garcia
noted that planning to fund two full-
time positions should be considered.
Similarly, he pointed out that the City
Finance Director also holds the position
of Assistant City Administrator and that
since division of those posts also seems
likely in the future, it would make sense to
plan for such an occurrence. In response,
Your Speed Is…Too Fast!
You’ve likely noticed the newest
speed-fighting sign that’s been posted
in various high traffic areas. Police Chief
David Towe obtained the sign and has
been moving it to different locations
to study the impact. In an online post
showing-off the sign
during the first week of
February, Towe said, “By
now I am sure you’ve
seen this little gem out
and about. It’s a mobile
radar sign that can be
placed wherever there is
a bracket.” Towe said the
signs were brought to his
attention by City Councilor
Jim Lewis who saw them
while attending the recent
League of Oregon Cities
meeting in Portland.
Towe’s post continued,
“These are pretty cool signs because
not only do they display speed to slow
drivers down but they also collect
data as to number of cars, average
speed, etc. This will allow us to better
concentrate our speed control efforts
where needed the most.”

upwards of $300,000 annually.
Paving the Way—Administrator Alvis
informed council that the city has been
awarded two, $50,000 state grants for
road paving and improvement projects
on Shafer Lane and Applegate Street.
Alvis also reported that improvements
will be underway soon to improve the
“D” Street parking lot with the removal
of landscaping blocks that hinder
accessibility and traffic flow.
Dog Park Update—During a special
on-site meeting of the Parks Committee,
members toured a 75’x360’ section of
city-land located near the Presbyterian
Church/Pheasant Meadows Park.
Representatives of the dog park group
pointed out design possibilities to
construct a parking lot, ADA walkways,
fencing, benches, as well as play areas
for small dogs and large dogs. This site
visit occurred after another area of city-
owned land abutting the Jackson Creek
Townhome development was apparently
withdrawn from consideration due to
concerns of contamination of the creek by
dog waste.
According to the minutes of the Pheasant
Meadows on-site meeting, discussion
among Parks Committee members was
so positive that they voted unanimously
to forward the siting recommendation to
the city council. After the group compiles
a report which will include budgeting
and neighborhood survey information,
the council will hear the matter. Should
the council decide to move forward,
development of the site for a dog park will
require obtaining a Conditional Use Permit
and a Public Hearing.
In an effort to test the impact, city
crews installed brackets in known trouble
spots so the signs may be transported
and easily installed.
With hopes of obtaining more signs,
Towe tasked Police Officer Kayla Cutting
with submitting a grant
request for the purchase of
two more signs. If reaction
on the Jacksonville Review
Facebook page is any
indication, the city needs to
purchase far more than two
signs. The site was inundated
with messages urging the
police to install them in
nearly every neighborhood
in town. Residents not only
responded online but in-
person to Chief Towe, letting
him know that the sign was
making a “huge impact on
speed in those areas.” Other feedback
fielded by the Review suggested that the
city purchase more speed signs despite
the outcome of the grant request and
simply pass the expense along to real
estate developers and/or tap the General

I went
through an unexpected and financially
devastating divorce that wiped out a
lifetime of earnings and savings.
Life goes on, and as the real estate
market started to decline in 2007, the
worst recession I have experienced,
my real estate partner and I began
renovating and reselling (Flipping) homes.
Renovating and flipping homes can be
fun and profitable, but it’s a full time
job managing contractors; and, in 2007,
homes were declining in price, so speed
was critical to how much profit you would
make and we realized we didn’t have time
to manage flips and work full time.
In 2008, we realized we had little
retirement, so we then changed our
focus to creating a stream of passive
income that would be never-ending
and that we could retire on. Seven
years ago, my incredible partner and I
started buying rental homes and became
very disciplined about not spending,
but investing, our money. It’s easy
to buy that cool new BMW or take a
Caribbean Cruise, but being in my early
50’s, building a comfortable retirement
income was far more important than
material gratification.

The “Zestimate”
Clients repeatedly ask me about
Zillow. For those who aren’t familiar
with Zillow, it’s a website offering an
opinion of a home’s value
called a “Zestimate” and it is
prominently displayed on each
property’s listing page.
While that information is
helpful for buyers and sellers,
Zillow’s Zestimate can be
highly inaccurate. Zillow
uses a proprietary formula
to determine the value of a home from
information the website has obtained
from public records and information
entered by users. Home characteristics,
such as square footage, location or the
number of bathrooms, are given different
weights according to their influence on
home sale prices in each specific geography
over a specific period of time, Zillow
says. The site also mixes in property tax
information and prior sale prices for a
home, as well as for others nearby.
But there are several areas where this
information usually falls short:
• Zillow can’t determine the actual
condition of a house. Has it been
recently renovated—or is it in dire
need of remodeling?
• Zillow accounts for the number of
bedrooms, baths and the total square
footage, but these don’t always
correspond to a higher or lower
price: Sometimes a bathroom is
poorly located, or a bedroom is tiny.
• Zillow doesn’t consider permitted
versus unpermitted structures or
other property nuances.
• Physical characteristics that impact
local demand and value, such as
architectural style, year built, and
layout and flow of a home, are not
factored in.
As real estate agents, we know that
one of our most difficult tasks is pricing
a home. The motivation of the parties is
always a factor, as is the condition of a
home and those around it. No computer
formula can quantify the value of a
kitchen that was remodeled before a
home was put on the market or a yard
that is poorly maintained. It simply isn’t
possible to predict the value of a home
with a level of accuracy sufficient to make
a housing decision.
Zillow knows that’s true, and says,
“The Zestimate is not an appraisal and you
won’t be able to use it in place of an appraisal,
though you can certainly share it with

 Speaking of Antiquing
with Margaret Barnes, Pickety Place Antiques
On Kitchen Utensils
Kitchen utensils are an everyday item
that one rarely spends any time thinking
about, until you can’t find the one you
are looking for.
Kitchen drawers all over America
are over-filled with tools one doesn’t
necessarily need. I call these
“vanity tools.” Do you really
need a pincer to remove a
strawberry stem when a
good finger pinch will do?
Primitive kitchens of the
19th century had tools that
were functional. They were
handmade by a skilled whittler or carver,
forged in a blacksmith shop from iron,
pounded from copper, brass, tin, or steel.
These were typically hung on the wall near
the stove or work table, at the ready.
The 20th century brought graniteware,
enamelware, aluminum, and the
popularity of painted wooden handles.
Color was brought into the kitchen with
a lovely green, a bold red, and a neutral
white. Functional tools were now pretty
and a pleasure to use and display. The
hard paint on the handles withstood
daily use for many years.
There is a tool for every job, thanks to
the mother of invention. If color can be
a comfort food, then the green painted
handles would be it for me.
Time and use have negated the green
of my tools to bare wood, I use them
nonetheless. I find an old, unpainted,
sturdy potato masher a pleasure to use.
When scrambling eggs, I love to use
the twisted metal tool with coiled wire
wrapped around an oval metal frame.
The wrapped wire looks like the coils on
an old hot plate, the paint gone, but it has
withstood the test of time.
One of my favorite finds came from
my in-law’s cavernous cellar. The
smooth wooden handle shows no
indication of its former color. It has a
twisted metal shaft that squares off and
is interlaced with metal, woven to form
a rigid mesh hinged
box. There is a round
metal closure that, when
pinched, slides down
to open. Inside it was
a square of chain-mail
for scrubbing cast iron.
The tool was created to
hold the loose tailings of lye soap for
swishing in the wash water.
Be aware while collecting wooden-
handled tools for your kitchen. The paint
on the original items craze and chip over
time, and many people have tried to
paint the bare wood to restore them, but
the paint composition is different now
and with a trained eye you will see and
feel the difference.
Keep the wooden-handled tools out of
the dishwasher, as that will be the end of
it. Try not to soak them too long in the
sink, as water is the culprit and will cause
the old paint to craze and chip.
There is beauty in the silicone and
other new materials they now use for
kitchen tools. The colors are vibrant and
fun to use. I just wonder if they will be
collectible in 40 years.
At Pickety Place, our kitchen area has
a large selection of primitive and vintage
kitchen tools. Many still have their
original green or red paint. Some of the
tools will leave you wondering for what
purpose they were originally intended.

It’s so strange to me how much the
world can change from one generation
to the next. New technology, new
techniques for doing things, and new
ways of speaking. Much of what is at
the core of all of this change is fostered
by technology. Virtually everyone
has a smartphone, a computer and a
television, and the changes these things
wreak on today’s youth is immense in
immeasurable ways. If you walk into my
high school cafeteria, nearly every hand
March 15th, 5:00-7:00pm in the school
gymnasium. Art created by over 400
students will be on display, showcasing
their best work in clay, pastels, pen and
ink, watercolor, wire, and more. In a
unique partnership with teachers and
administrators, nearly one hundred
parents have been in Jacksonville’s
classrooms to add art to their children’s
curriculum, leading students through
projects designed to teach artistic
concepts such as shape, color, line and
texture and to expose them to the work
of master artists, such as Henri Matisse,
Picasso, van Gogh, Pollock, Eric Carle,
O'Keeffe, Durer, and Warhol. The public
is welcome to celebrate the achievements
of our young artists!
It takes a corps of dedicated of parents
to make hands-on learning experience

they make me enjoy our little town of
Jacksonville even more. The phone-
obsessed people of today will not
experience the inexpressible feeling that

sunlight on muddied brick if they are
busy causing premature neck wrinkles,
off of your phone to enjoy what is
happening at the present moment, if
you do not take time to consider your
surroundings, you will have lost a very
special opportunity; one that simply
cannot be brought back again.
So, as I often say in these articles,
please take the time to look up from the
addicting little screens resting on your
palm to enjoy a little town which, with
its muddied brick walls and peaceful
demeanor, are begging you to look up
and enjoy the moment.

Jerry Ferronato Has Served
Jacksonville Well
When my wife and I moved to
Jacksonville six years ago, we met
numerous fine Jacksonville citizens
and in so doing several names were
frequently mentioned; among them
were Pete Dahl, Lee
Lewis, John Braislin
and Jerry Ferronato.
Unfortunately, I
missed out on the
opportunity to meet
Pete, Lee and John
before their deaths,
but I finally connected
with Jerry Ferronato
when I sat down to
interview him for this
month’s “Sensational
Seniors” article. I was
not disappointed.
Jerry’s life started on March 20, 1941
in Blye, California, but he was raised in
Midland CA, which was a Kaiser Industry
steel town, meaning that Kaiser owned
the town, including all the stores and even
the bar. Like most residents of Midland,
Jerry’s father worked for Kaiser and was
paid in script, which the family used to
purchase their necessities at the company
stores. Jerry’s early education came in
Bloomington, CA and then high school
in Colton, CA. After high school, Jerry
enrolled at Pasadena City College but
only stayed for three semesters, saying he
really only “learned to drink beer in the
mountains and play whisk.”
Putting college aside, Jerry and four
friends joined the Navy with Jerry
becoming a missile fire control technician.
His 40-week electronics training focused
on the emerging world of computers
which was to be a fortuitous training for
Jerry’s civilian life. He said that being
a fire control technician on a ship was
“a great job, because I did not walk the
decks, had good hours, worked in an air-
conditioned room and sailed through the
Panama Canal on the USS Galveston in
comfort.” While his ship received orders
to sail to Cuba as the Cuban Missile
Crisis surfaced, two ship boilers went
down, and they returned to San Diego for
repairs as the crisis came to a head and
was eventually alleviated.
Secure in his comfortable fire control
technician lodging, Jerry experienced
Japan, Hawaii, Canada and Alaska before
completing his tour of duty. In 1964, he
was back in college as a more mature and
focused young man and enrolled at San
Bernardino Valley Junior College, seeking
a degree in electronics. In addition to
carrying a full load of classes and making
the Dean’s List, Jerry, utilizing his Navy
training, worked full time at night for
General Telephone Company. With his
two-year electronics degree, Jerry started
working days for General Telephone,
focusing on small telephone companies
and, specifically, on telephone technology
that supports mechanical equipment
and long-line telephone services. Shortly
after starting his new position with
General Telephone he married, Sandee,
who he had known in high school but
never dated. On February 5, 2018, they
celebrated their 52nd anniversary.
Jerry was to work for General
Telephone until 1992 when he was
offered a “golden handshake” retirement
that he could not refuse. During the 25
years he worked for the company, he
spent time in San Bernardino, Santa
Monica, Phoenix, AZ, Banning, CA,
and Long Beach. Interspersed with his
work were frequent extended training
sessions at a variety of places across the
United States. While he held a number
of positions with General Telephone, he
was primarily a computer analyst for
the company. Even when able to operate
out of a home base, he still traveled
around California helping put in on-line
telephone systems. As he remembers, “I
was gone most of the time and, if I was
home more than three days a month, I
was lucky. This was especially hard on
my family as Sandee and I now had our
daughter, Michele,
but they were
troopers. All of this
travel did make
it easy to take my
early retirement at
52.” The last five

Spring Cleaning on the
Tip of Your Tongue
As we approach spring, it is a perfect
time for spring-cleaning your body.
The less obvious place to start is in your
mouth. Specifically, your tongue, which
plays a very obscure but important role
in your overall well-being. The tongue is
perhaps one of the most underrated and
neglected organs in
your body. Besides
its crucial function
in digestion, it is
also one of the
most powerful and
effective organs
to help detoxify
your body and
lower stress levels.
Here are three
easy “Ayervedic”
practices to get
you started. These
practices will improve your overall health
and boost your immune system.
Your tongue is one of the body’s
several detoxification paths. Keeping
it clean is easy and is a crucial part a
health regimen. It simply requires using a
tongue scraper: an inexpensive V-shaped,
thin (ideally stainless steel) tool. Using a
tongue scraper is part of my daily routine
that I learned in my Ayurvedic training
(Ayerveda is an ancient Indian science of
mind-body-wellness). This simple practice
has been scientifically proven to help
remove bacteria and toxins (otherwise
called gunk) that we experience as bad
breath or cotton mouth. Brushing your
tongue with a toothbrush will only
relocate the bacteria or embed them in
your toothbrush rather than remove them.
It’s best to use a tongue scraper first, (the
back of a spoon will work) then, brush
your teeth as usual.
Detoxification is just one of the benefits
of tongue scraping. Removing gunk and
phlegm will improve your overall sense of
taste and digestion, because as you scrape
you are gently massaging the internal
organs linked to different areas of the
tongue as well as activating the salivary
glands. My Ayervedic teacher told us
that as you reach the back of your tongue
it can cause the your eyes to water.
These “tears” contain enzymes that are
beneficial to clean your eyes and prevent
cataracts. I was in my early twenties
when I learned this. I was mostly
motivated by the removing of gunk and
bad breath, but over the years I’ve come
to appreciate all the extra benefits this
simple hygiene habit has given me.
The next two yogic practices to detox
your body using your tongue are linked
to yogic breathing techniques called
“prana-yama.” Prana is your life force.
Yama roughly translates “to harvest.”

FIV
Last summer I adopted a new cat that we named
Rexie. We didnt need a new cat, and my wife and I
had discussed many times how we weren’t going to
get a new cat until our older cats had passed away. We
did not want to stress our older cats,
and one of our cats had a history
of inappropriate urination and we
did not want that to start again.
However, this new cat was orange
and white (my wife’s favorite color
for cats), was very sweet, and was set
to be euthanized because he has FIV.
FIV, or “Feline Immunodeficiency
Virus,” is a virus that weakens a
cat’s immune system—similar to
HIV in humans. Cats with it are
more prone to getting infections,
dental disease, and, according to
the Cornell Feline Health Center
website, the median survival
age for cats with FIV is only 5 years. It is normally
transmitted from cat to cat via deep bites and it’s
very rare for the disease to be transmitted via casual
contact. There is no treatment or cure; the secondary
infections and dental disease are just managed.
So, why did I put my two older cats at risk to provide
a home for Rexie?
For one, the risk of transmission to a healthy cat that
does not fight with another cat is very low. As Rexie was
a nice cat, and my cats were not fighters, I did not think
there was much risk for transmission. Thus, I felt the
risk to my non-fighting cats was quite low.
Before I worked here I worked for a non-profit
organization that provided housing for around 40
FIV cats. They lived normal lives other than they had
more frequent upper respiratory infections and dental
disease (although all cats in long term shelters do to
some extent). Yet, they did not seem to live any shorter

Other civic volunteer work included working
fourteen years with Terry Gieg to put on the annual
Victorian Christmas celebration and assisting with
the Chinese New Year Parade. In addition to these
volunteer activities, Jerry served for seven years on the
Jacksonville Planning Commission, acting as Chairman
during his last two years on the Commission. He was
able to lead the Planning Commission through some
tumultuous times, including Jacksonville opting out
of the Jackson County Regional Problem Solving
consortium, which to him was, “Just one more layer
of needless bureaucracy.” He was also the Planning
Commission Chairman when the long zoning
challenge for the Jacksonville Presbyterian Church
was finally approved, relating, “I didn’t go to this
church, but could see no reason why the building
permit should not be approved. I had people mad at
lives than other cats. Stray cats with FIV cannot have
their mild infections managed, so they often become
major infections. In my experience, well-cared-for cats
with FIV could live healthy lives of normal length. Thus,
the shorter life expectancy of FIV cats
did not faze me. Plus, Rexie is about
10-years-old, so he was already well
past the median survival age.
Rexie also had good oral health
and no signs of respiratory infections,
so I was not deterred by those risk
factors, either.
Lastly, FIV positive cats can be great
pets and deserve a chance, so I felt it
was time to put my money where my
mouth was and adopt one with whom
I felt an instantaneous bond.
I am not suggesting that everyone
should adopt an FIV positive cat.
They do require some special care.
FIV cats should not be outdoor cats as they can transmit
the disease to other neighborhood cats. FIV cats should
not be brought into homes with cats that fight, nor
should a FIV cat that likes to fight be brought into
a home with other cats. Also, they do require more
veterinary care than most mixed-breed cats (though,
in my experience, less veterinary care than some pure
breed cats such as Persians and Siamese). If you think
an FIV positive cat will work in your household, or you
only want one cat, let some local cat rescues and shelters
know you would be willing to adopt one. Otherwise,
many local organizations are forced to euthanize these
cats. Locally, Sanctuary One has a population of FIV
positive cats. You can always check with them to see if
any of their population will fit in with your household.

Jerry volunteerism has slowed in recent years
due to some serious health issues, but he still keeps
his hand in Pacifica, a non-profit that provides
environmental educational opportunities for children.
He still enjoys working in his wood shop, but admits,
“Even though I had a career in technology, we don’t
have a computer in the house and we don’t want
one.” Jerry Ferronato is one more Jacksonville citizen,
who in retirement, has made a positive difference in
our community!
Mike McClain spent 32 years as a teacher and school
administrator, retiring in 1999 as Superintendent of Central
Point Schools. He and his wife relocated to Jacksonville four
years ago and are enjoying immersing themselves in this
unique community.

“Kindness is an action word. You can be
empathetic, respectful, and compassionate
while sitting on your couch. But to be kind
you have to get off your couch
and do something.”

We are built to be kind. It’s not that we
have to somehow make ourselves be kind
and make ourselves be happy because we
believe that’s how we should be. It’s that
being kind, to ourselves and to others,
just naturally makes us happy. Being
kind to yourself, then, is to be a good
guardian of your own health.
Why not do an experiment in listening
to what comes out of your mouth—the
good and the bad. You may realize that
you don’t need to say everything you’re
thinking—i.e., if your spouse does
something that annoys you, you can
always keep it to yourself. After all, if
you’ve said it before, (over and over again)
those little things that annoy you probably
don’t need to be mentioned again. This
is kindness in action, and it multiplies.
Let the small stuff go and you may find
this is a kindness as much to yourself as
to others. You can even go further: try
replacing those small negativities with
expressions of appreciation, saying things
that are uplifting and complimentary.
As a caregiver, I’ve come to the
conclusion that to take better care of
myself, I must take action on how I
treat others. Thus, my 2017 New Year’s
resolution was: Let go of petty obsessions!
To take a page from Thupten Jinpa’s, A
Fearless Heart:
It’s a paradox of compassion that we
ourselves are one of its greatest beneficiaries.
Compassion makes us happier, it gets us out of
our usual head full of disappointments, regrets,
and worries about ourselves and focuses on
something bigger. Perhaps counter-intuitively,
compassion makes us more optimistic. Because
although it is focused on suffering, it is an
energized state concerned with the ultimately
positive wish for the end of suffering, as well as
the possibility of doing something about it.
Compassion gives us a sense of purpose
beyond our habitual petty obsessions. It lightens

In other words, as Tom Tait said, I need to
“get off the couch and do something.” In
order to reach out and be kind to others,
I need to make sure and put care and
kindness of myself first. I know this sounds
very selfish and self-indulgent, but once
again, if I’m not healthy, in body and in
spirit, I can’t help others.
To take better care of myself, here is a
list of my Must Haves, in no particular
order. This is my list of things that keep
me balanced every day:
Healthy diet, exercise, reading,
my morning time, morning coffee,
meditation, weights and stretches,
neighborhood walk.
I wake up very early every morning,
between 4 and 5 am, but usually closer to
4. This is my time, and essential for my
well-being. By 10 am, after I’ve finished
my morning routine, I’m ready to head
out the door and begin my day with and

 News From Britt Hill

So, you asked…

One question has come up recently that
I would like to address. Many patrons
are asking, “Is Britt going to announce
the 2018 season in thirds?” Logically,
since Britt is now announcing the 2018
Season in February, March and April,
patrons might assume that it makes sense
to break it up evenly. However, there is
nothing logical or predictable about the
music business. Let me begin here with
Booking 101.
Mike Sturgill, Britt’s Director of
Programming for over twenty years, is
essentially Britt’s booking agent. His job
is to facilitate live performances—in the
broadest sense. This entails securing and
arranging performances, negotiating
deals, understanding and agreeing to
proper technical set-ups for shows, and
in many cases also securing hospitality
(hotels, dinners), and travel logistics.
Starting in late September, right after
the Britt Season’s final curtain, Mike is
looking for the next year’s I-5 corridor
opportunities. Who is booking Seattle,
Bend and Redding? Generally, it’s the
artist’s management that determines
an artist’s schedule for the coming
year, dedicating certain timeframes in
specific regions.
During the course of his tenure at Britt,
Mike has established relationships with
the big dogs, such as Creative Artists
Agency (CAA) and William Morris
Agency (WMA). Mike contacts their
managers and agents about potential
performances and this communication
often leads to offers, which Mike and I
negotiate until a deal is closed. During
this period, an ‘option’ is held on a date
or dates and a time-slot is put on hold for
that artist. Frequently, Britt will have 1st,
2nd and 3rd holds with three different
artists on the same date; hoping to confirm
just one. In a typical year, Britt will make
120 offers to land just 30 shows.
Negotiations can get complicated. For
instance, under a door split arrangement,
the band's payment is directly tied to the
event's attendance. Under a guaranteed
performance fee, Britt is on the hook
regardless of concert turnout. Not
surprisingly, most of Britt’s bookings
are guarantees. Technical requirements
for the show with a document called
a ‘technical rider’ are also part of the
negotiations and can include anything
from an extra set of drums to special
lighting. These requirements can get
expensive and even kill a deal.
Mike’s job is to make the best possible
offer that makes sense for Britt. The
agent’s job is to get the best possible
offer that makes sense for the artist.
Because of the many moving parts to
these deals, Britt frequently is navigating
the art of the deal right up to the
announcement date. The very nature of
this process makes it impossible for Britt
to pre-determine which shows will be
announced with any real accuracy.
The music business is not scientific.
It is an art form from start to finish.
Moreover, art is hard to predict and that
makes it exciting for all of us. Despite
these challenges each season, Mike brings
us another great summer line-up! Stay
