Design Document for

Being Mindful of Your Emotions (aka EQ @ ECU)

 Age range: 18 – 80
Audience
 Tenure: >1 year up to 40+ years
Description
 Level of education: high school diploma – graduate degree

 Staff members will be able to identify and label core human emotions.
Major Course
 Staff members will be able to identify and label their own emotions as they feel them.
Objectives
 Staff members will be able to accurately identify the emotions/feelings of others based on verbal (and non-verbal) clues.
(Terminal) Based on their observations/assessments, staff members will then formulate empathetic statements.
 Staff members will be able to compose formulated responses based on a self-inventory of their own emotions and the
emotions of others.
 Staff members will engage in critical conversations – they will provide and receive feedback without becoming defensive
and maintain positive relationships with others.

 Classify the five core human emotions into their corresponding levels of intensity: high, medium and low.
Course Enabling
 Develop a list of the professional benefits of executing self-management and not succumbing to emotional triggers
Objectives causing irrational reactions.
 Observe and take note of most of their interactions with co-workers and members for a period of two (2) weeks. After the
two weeks, they will record and upload detailed descriptions of how they used social awareness strategies to formulate
responses and not knee-jerk emotionally charged reactions.
 Develop two different outcomes for one scenario – one exhibiting high emotional intelligence vs one exhibiting low
emotional intelligence.

Learning At the end of each of the four main competencies (Self-awareness; self-management; social awareness and relationship

Course in employee personnel files. This certification will be required for all new and existing staff.
Within each section, there will be quizzes, journaling exercises, online group discussion boards (asynchronous) to assist with
knowledge transfer.

One main course consisting of two (2) competencies (personal and social) and four (4) sub-groups:
Course Structure

The four (4) sub-groups must be taken in prescribed order. However, within each sub-group, activities may be done in
alternating order as they all are geared toward the same objectives.
Face-to-face: Eight (8) hours total for entire course; each of the four (4) modules will be two (2) hours long

Task: Identify core emotions and categorize low, medium and high examples with appropriate core emotion.
RLO Outline
1. Introduction to emotional intelligence and first of four (4) modules: Self-Awareness
2. Introduction of five (5) core human emotions. (context)
3. Label core emotions.
4. Outline physiological changes associated with each core emotion. (i.e., anger may manifest through flushing of the face)
5. Display chart of core emotions with intensities of low, medium and high level variances of each.
