Reflection 4
1. What are you most proud of in this essay? Be specific and explain why.
a. What I am most proud of in this essay would my topic

sentences/claims. My claims in my opinion are really strong and a

connection back to the thesis. My claims made good points to the

misleading ideas that the dream creates for the Black community.

2. If you had more time, what would you change or do differently? Explain.
a. If I had more time I would do my analysis differently. I think that my

analysis is a bit repetitive and it is not go in depth in enough. I feel if

I had more time i could ask for more help on how I can make my

analysis go more in depth than rather just scraping the surface.

3. What was most challenging about writing this essay? Be specific and explain
why.
a. The most challenging for me about this essay would most likely be

the introduction paragraph and the thesis. I had a hard time coming

up with what I wanted to write about in my essay. I was stuck either I

should be for or against the dream.

4. What did you learn about your own writing and/or writing process when
writing this essay? Explain.
a. What I learned about my writing process is that I need to have a

really well thought out idea of what I want to write about otherwise I

find it hard for my ideas to connect to the book/topic. Then if I do not

have good evidence that connects to the topic of the essay and my

thesis it is going to be hard to find a way to make it connect and

write a well thought out analysis.

5. How did you find the experience of reading this book? Explain.
a. I found the book pretty eye opening because before I never really

paid attention to that the dream hurts people more than it hurts them.

Everyone in my family that I look up to or hold dear to my heart has

some form of success because they worked hard. Although the book

was really hard to comprehend at points it gave me a greater

understanding of the struggles that people in today’s society around

me are going through.

6. What is one specific understanding, realization, and/or new perspective you

gained in your analysis of Coates' argument that made an impact on your
thinking? Explain.
a. One specific understanding that made an impact on my thinking is

that the united states has not really changed from the ways it has

treated people of color. The united states has only found new ways

to trap people in the same way corrupt system that doesn't not let

people of color flourish in today’s society.

7. If you could ask Coates 2 questions, what would they be and why would you
ask these questions.
a. What if your son did not react the way that you expected him?

i. I could ask him this because how about if his son sees things

in a different light and does not like what his dad is trying to

tell him

b. How could your perspective on the dream be changed if Prince

Jones did not die?

i. Since Prince was a big part in Coates life and if he did not die

could he believe in the dream today

8. Based on the reading of the book, Between the World and Me, and/or today's
Umoja event, what topics are you interested in researching further? Explain.
a. I am interested in how more Africans went to Mexico and Peru than

the United States yet I have not really heard much of it.

b. I also want to research how people can just change their past and

erase their loved ones just so they are not seen differently.
