About São Paulo
Transportation
Regarding public transportation, São Paulo is one of the best cities in Brazil. Its subway, train and bus services can take
you practically anywhere in the city. However, keep in mind that during determined periods of the day, they can get extremely
crowded – and even dangerous. Friendly advice: don’t ever lose track of your belongings and always keep your eyes open for
people acting suspiciously.
As a big city, São Paulo’s public transportation system is complete with train, subway and bus services. The preferred
options are frequently the subway and the buses, due to the extension of their lines and speed.
The subway system holds four big lines, Linha 1-‐Azul, Linha 2-‐Verde, Linha 3-‐Vermelha e Linha 4-‐Amarela. The Line 5-‐
Lilás is still under construction. A ticket costs R$4 and you can easily access any of the lines. The subway works every day from
4h40 a.m. until 00:00h, except for Saturday, when it remains open work until 1h. The buses are all around the city and also cost
R$4.

As a student, you’re allowed to get a special card (Bilhete Único Estudante) for São Paulo’s public transportation, which
will allow you to pay half a fare (R$2,00) to take either the bus, train or subway – all you need to do is charge it at any subway
station. The International Office and Clube Internacional can help you apply for it. If you’re not sure how to get somewhere by
public transportation, or if you need to know at what time the bus is expected to arrive at your stop, you can always check SPtrans’
website (http://www.sptrans.com.br) for your route, or the mobile apps Citymapper and Moovit, which tend to be very precise.
You can always find maps of the rail network on every station, too.
At night, we strongly recommend you to take a ride, taxi or Uber, due to security issues. Some apps you can download
to guarantee you always have a way to get home are: 99 Taxis (note: amongst the categories of ride in the app, there’s 99POP,
which is cheaper), Uber an Easy Taxis.
There are also bike rental stations scattered throughout the city – they are orange and belong to Itaú bank. You can use
your Bilhete Único to take them and drop them at any other Itaú bike station you want.
Security
São Paulo is an extremely large and crowded city, which makes its people’s security harder to guarantee. It’s violence
rates have been increasing each year. Therefore, make sure to always keep track of your belongings; avoid picking up your
mobiles, cameras and other valuable objects in the streets; always pay attention to your surroundings. Take special care when
wandering around at night or at crowded (or too empty) places. São Paulo’s downtown is also known for being quite dangerous,
so watch out!
Emergency numbers
1. Police – 190
2. Ambulance to a public hospital – 192 (note: Public hospitals are free to Brazilians, so they work at
overcapacity. We recommend you check your insurance plan beforehand to know which private
hospital’s you’re entitled to go and write down the emergency number you should call if anything
should happen – it’d be a good thing to put an emergency tag on your wallet, too)
3. Firefighters -‐ 193
4. Look for your country’s consulate phone number and address here:

Housing
The University does not offer housing for its students, but it’s not difficult to find a good place in the city. The best
neighborhoods for young people which are close to campus are Pinheiros and Vila Madalena – exchange students often stay in
these neighborhoods. There you’ll find all the facilities someone may need, including good bus lines and subway stations, and a
very agitated nightlife, with several bars and night clubs.
If you haven’t found a place to live upon arrival, we recommend you stay in a hostel, and we’ve listed a few good options
below. You can search for a place in websites such as Airbnb or Facebook groups such as Repúblicas USP. There will also be
options in the whatsapp groups or announced at FEA. A fair rent price would be a maximum of R$1500, but it depends on the
neighborhood, on the size of the apartment, number of people sharing it, on the facilities included, etc.
Hostels:
• Ô de Casa Hostel (R. Inácio Pereira da Rocha, 385 -‐ Vila Madalena, São Paulo -‐ SP, 05410-‐001 -‐ +55 11 3063-‐
5216)
• Garoa Hostel (R. Guaicuí, 72 -‐ Pinheiros, São Paulo -‐ SP, 05427-‐030 -‐ +55 11 2729-‐7211)
• Sampa Hostel ( R. Girassol, 519 -‐ Vila Madalena, São Paulo -‐ SP, 05433-‐001 -‐ +55 11 3034-‐1996)
Phone Number
Exchange students often like to get a Brazilian phone number in order to make calls and have access to the internet. The
main choices are usually VIVO or Claro; they are considered the best operators in Brazil. You can go to one of their shops (easily
encountered in shopping malls) and ask for a good deal; if your Portuguese isn’t so sharp or if you would like help, the Clube
Internacional members would be glad to help!
About FEA-‐USP
The Faculdade de Economia, Administração e Contabilidade da Universidade de São Paulo (FEA – USP), is considered
the best school for Business and Economics in Brazil. Four courses are offered: Business and Management, Economics,
Accounting and Actuarial.
The International Office will provide you a list of classes you can attend during the Orientation Week. Courses in
Portuguese and in English are available. If you have any doubts on classes or professors, you can always ask the Clube
Internacional members for their opinions.
FEA holds a large and complete library – where you can lend books, have group meetings, use computers and study – as
well as computer labs, at the building FEA5, where you can have access to computers and print up to 40 pages per month for free.
If you’re looking to join a sports team, there is a student association called Atlética, who manages the modalities. You
can be part of the soccer, basketball, volleyball, swimming, tennis, rowing, futsal, and handball teams, track and field teams and
many others available. They will probably contact you during your first days here.
Clube Internacional also holds a partnership with Enactus, where you can volunteer for social work in poor communities
of the city. It can be a very enriching experience to impact other people’s lives in a third world country.
Wi-‐Fi
As a student, you’ll have access to free Wi-‐Fi all over campus. In order to do so, once you have your login and unified
password to USP’s digital system, you’ll be able to request access to USPnet Sem Fio at https://www.semfio.usp.br. All you
have to do is create an account and password and you’ll be good to go!
Campus
The USP Campus is called Cidade Universitária and is located on Butantã, in the West zone of the city of São Paulo. It is
home to 23 schools, FEA being one one of them. It is also where the Medical school’s hospital (Hospital Universitário) is located,
and you can find bank agencies, a police academy and the biggest center for sportive practices (CEPE-‐USP: Centro de Práticas
Esportivas da USP) there as well.
Restaurants
On campus, you’ll find four dining halls – which are commonly called “Bandejão” -‐ Central, Física, Química and
Prefeitura-‐ , where you can have low-‐cost meals: breakfast costs R$0,50 and you’ll pay R$2 for lunch and dinner. The closest to
FEA are Central and Física. In spite of being cheap, the meals are quite good and eating there will save you a lot of money. You
can download the Cardápio USP app in order to check their menu daily.
Sweden is an excellent self-‐service restaurant at FEA, but very expensive and usually frequented by the professors. You’ll
find a cheaper self-‐service restaurant just across the street from FEA, at FAU – which is quite good too.
Sports
The CEPE-‐USP is a very large complex which offers several options for sports practice and courses. You can get inside
using your USP card and use every equipment and space. A medical certificate may be required for some modalities, such as
swimming, but it’s easy to get one.
You can get more information at http://www.cepe.usp.br/ (English version is available)
