WORKPLACE ETHIC PROBLEMS

The feeling of a person about their career, job and the ways they respond in their
responsibilities is called as work ethics. Basically, work ethics is being observed through the
attitude, behaviour, communication and interaction with the other. A proper ethics in a
workplace resulting in many positive impacts such as a good environment and
communication areas. This also will form a great bonding of an employer and employees.
Thus, every company should acknowledge and concerned regarding the proper attitude in a
workplace. Unfortunately, we often heard about the violation occurred in a workplace. The
violation occurs due to the less understanding of the moral codes of guidelines and practices
of a company.

There are several examples of ethical problems that occur in a workplace. One of the
ethics problems is the time given by the company been misused [1]. Time is gold. Thus, the
good management of time can lead a better future for everyone. The wisely management of
time also reflect ourselves. However, there were several of them does not realize the proper
management of time. Some workers come late to the office and ask the others to covering
them up [1]. Some of them also used the time by staying at the office for another works such
as handling their own business. They also take a long period of time break even though they
know that the time had exceeded the limit given. Being unpunctual and have a poor
attendance are not a good ethic for a person because they used to ignore all the procedures
and policy of a company.

Next, the ethical problems occur in a workplace is due to the illegal practices which is by
giving and receiving the bribery from someone. The bribery given also called as gratification
and come in many kinds such as money, services, sexual favours and properties. Basically,
the bribe is given when a person is willing to do a favour from someone. The favours come in
many types such as leaking the confidential information, asking for sexual relationship and
contracts. Due to this crime, the person who involves in this activity will be sentenced to Act
section 16 or 17 A, 2009 [3].

Other than that, sexual harassment also one of the ethical problems that always occur in
[5]
the workplace . Sexual harassment is a form of sex discrimination and will be sentence
under Section 14 (1), Employment Act 1955[4]. It applies to any company or workplace where
the number of staff is more than 15 people. The harassment can be divided into two which is
physically or mentally abused. Moreover, the attitude of refraining the person from taking
any action to against the harassment is also called as harassment.

Moreover, the aggressive behaviour and treat the worker unfairly also one of the ethical
problems in a workplace too [2]. Normally, this problem is due to the differences of position in
management of a company. They do mistreat and disrespect the others by using their
position. They might use the offensive communication and sometime treat the other staff
unfairly. They also might fire a staff without any evidence of mistakes. A “favouritism” staff
will always been by their side thus affecting a poor communication environment between
them who always been apart in a workplace.

Lastly, the improper usage of company assets also one of the ethical problems relate to
[2]
the workplace . Some worker abuse the computer privileges by using the internet to
download a movie, playing games, using phone calls at the company’s cost for a long time
and many more instead of not performing their work. They also use a lot of paper and printer
for their own personal things. All the company stationary is being taken away without
permission. From this attitude, the worker can be called as a thief. As a worker, they should
know and understand their responsibilities while at company. Due to this attitude, the worker
might be scold by the employer thus lowering the trust of their manager towards them.

Referring to all the problem stated above, it might lead to a few consequences of poor
[5]
ethics in workplace . For example, the company might upgrade the rules and regulation
more strict. The staff also will be given a lower and fewer privileges from usual. A poor
ethics in a workplace also contribute to the undesirable work environment thus stunts the
growth and productivity of the company. The improper usage of assets and misused the time
given by the company are potentially to loss their job and company might close due to the
bad ethics in a workplace.
