Question 4

There were once two friends who were walking in a great desert. At one point in the
journey, agitated by the constant thirst and punishing heat, their tempers became short. Before
long, they got into an argument and one friend slapped the other in the face.
The one who was slapped was hurt but without saying anything, he took a stick and wrote in
the desert sand, “Today my friend slapped me in the face”.
The duo kept walking until they came upon an oasis where there was a beautiful lake
with clear, cool water for swimming. It was a welcome sight and the two friends jumped right
in. halfway through, the one that had been slapped got his leg stuck between some rocks and
started drowning. His friend quickly swam to him and pulled him to safety.
After he had recovered, he found a slab of rock and with the sharp end of another,
carved on to the stone. “Today my friend saved my life”. Curious, his friend asked, “Brother,
after I hurt you, you wrote in the sand but now that I have saved you, you write on a stone,
why?” The other replied, “When someone hurts you, we should write it in sand so that the
winds of forgiveness can erase it away. But if someone does something good for us, we must
engrave it in stone where no wind can ever erase it.”
