Generally there are 3 types of conditionals.
We choose the appropriate type depending on
the time and context.
Conditional I is used to express events that are
likely to happen in the present or future.
If + Present Simple, clause: will+ infinitive

Examples
If we prepare well for our exams, we will pass them.
If the weather is fine, I will go jogging.

Please note
It‘s possible to use different tenses in the 1st
conditional. We can also use imperative
sentences in the main clause. Note that there
is no specific subject in the imperative.

Imperative sentences express a command, a situation when someone asks

someone to do something, or a situation when someone is suggesting something.

Examples
If you don‘t know the answer, just ask.
If you feel anxious about tomorrow‘s exam, try to listen to relaxing music
and sleep earlier.

- Hi John. Do you have a minute? I really need your advice.

- What happened?
- I have an internship opportunity at my university but it‘s in another country and
lasts for 6 months. I‘m not sure I want to be away for so long.
- Why not? It‘s a rare opportunity! If you want to improve your knowledge and
skills, go for it. Your grades are good and you‘re a very responsible person. You
should definitely apply!
- Thanks, John!

- Hi Michael! Do you have a moment?

- Yeah, sure! What happened?
- I‘m about to open a start up company in Japan and I heard you‘ve spent more
than 10 years there. So how hard is it to do it?
- Well, it is definitely hard to do but not impossible. If you are ready to spend
money on lawyers and realtor consultants, open it. Otherwise, it‘s quite risky.
There‘s a good saying though - if you never try, you‘ll never know.

Compare

If clause (present simple) + imperative sentence

1. If clause(Present Simple) + imperative sentence (an advice, a command)

you‘ll never know. (first conditional without imperative,

2. If you never try
will+infinitiv)

3. If you have skills go for it. (advice without a direct subject)

4. If you are ready open it (infinitive)

Notice that imperative sentences have a tone of command and

directness in them,so they are better used with someone who
you know well (family, friends, colleagues, etc.)
