Experiment Title: Filter Press

Methodology
This document clearly defines the method and aspect to conduct the
laboratory experiment. The objective of experiment, experimental
procedures, risk assessment of experiment, and the equipment and
instrument used are explained.
Objective (Problem Statement):
Experiment 1: To determine the effect of the concentration of chalk mixture
on the volumetric flowrate of the mixture flowing through the filter press.
Experiment 2: To determine the effect of inlet flowrate of chalk mixture on
the efficiency of filtration.
Experiment 3: To determine the effect of the concentration of chalk mixture
on the efficiency of filtration.
Experiment 4: To determine the effect of the number of filter plate and
frame on the efficiency of filtration.
Instrument used:
Time watch, filter paper, filter plate and frame, chalk powder (calcium
carbonate), water and dryer
Experimental Procedure:
Experiment 1
1) Fill the tank with 15L of water and mix thoroughly with 100g of chalk
powder.
2) Insert the filter paper between each filter plate.
3) Set the valve to fully open and switch on the filter press.
4) Record the time taken to complete the filtration.
5) Replace the filter paper and clean the filter press until there is no powder
deposited on it.
6) Repeat steps 1 to 5 by using 150g, 200g, 250g and 300g of chalk powder.
Experiment 2
1) Fill the tank with 15L of water and mix thoroughly with 100g of chalk
powder.
2) Insert the filter paper between each filter plate.
3) Set the valve to fully open and switch on the filter press.
4) After filtration is completed, collect and measure the amount of the
powder deposited on the filter paper by sending it to the dryer for water
removal.
5) Replace the filter paper and clean the filter press until there is no powder
deposited on it.
6) Repeat steps 1 to 5 by altering the open extent of the valve to 1/4, 2/4
and 3/4.
Experiment 3
1) Fill the tank with 15L of water and mix thoroughly with 100g of chalk
powder.
2) Insert the filter paper between each filter plate.
3) Set the valve to fully open and switch on the filter press.
4) After filtration is completed, collect and measure the amount of the
powder deposited on the filter paper by sending it to the dryer for water
removal.
5) Replace the filter paper and clean the filter press until there is no powder
deposited on it.
6) Repeat steps 1 to 5 by using 150g, 200g, 250g and 300g of chalk powder.
Experiment 4
1) Fill the tank with 15L of water and mix thoroughly with 100g of chalk
powder.
2) Insert 3 sets of filter plate and frame into the filter press.
3) Insert the filter paper between each filter plate.
4) Set the valve to fully open and switch on the filter press.
5) After filtration is completed, collect and measure the amount of the
powder deposited on the filter paper by sending it to the dryer for water
removal.
6) Replace the filter paper and clean the filter press until there is no powder
deposited on it.
7) Repeat steps 1 to 6 by using 4, 5 and 6 sets of filter plate and frame.
