As part of our B. Ed curriculum, we had four months internship programme.
My school internship was at Baker Memorial Girls Higher Secondary School, Kottayam. I was asked to take class in standard VII and standard VII. It was a wonderful moment for me to engage with the students and teachers in that school. It gave me an opportunity to link the educational theory and pedagogical concepts with school settings. On the first day I was asked to take class in standard VII on the topic Repeated multiplication. I prepared the lessons well. The pupils responded and participated in all activities very well. I spot out some slow learners in my class and gave them special attention and time to understand the concept. I noticed that students learn math by doing various problems. The practice of more problems made the students think on it, increase their speed of calculations. I used different tricks and games to make the class more attentive. During my teaching practice period I found out that most of the students consider mathematics as a dry subject. It is due to the lack of basics in mathematics. Some students were no able to recollect multiplication table while doing problems. I helped them to learn multiplication table. Diagnostic test helped me to identify Students difficulty in learning. Remedial programme organised for students was effective. Once they by hart the multiplication table, they became interested in doing problems. Students of standard VIII were very active and they showed interest in doing problems. Some students had doubts while converting the number pattern to algebra. I think that I have to improve my explanation. I got an opportunity to conduct maths quiz competition for the students as part of club activity. They participated in the competition with great enthusiasm. Students also prepared a mathematics album. It gave them a space to showcase their works. I analysed that mathematics club is useful in arousing and maintaining interest in mathematics. Gifted students get an opportunity to satisfy their needs and interests by actively participating in the activities of such clubs and associations. My four month teaching experience has been the best, I had great time with my students. It gave me a good experience as a mathematics teacher. Through this programme I got a chance to work with experienced teachers and their constant support helped me to extend my pedagogical practices and beliefs.
