Standard: United States History National Standards

Title: America before and after World War II primarily focusing on “the new deal” and the great
Depression.

Subject: US history

Grade: 11th grade

Time required: 4 class periods (1 hour each class)

Introduction/overview:

Students will:
1. Recall, discuss and build on what they have studied about the United States during the period
Prior to World War II in order to compare and contrast key themes from the era
(Isolationism, the Great Depression, etc.) With that of the United States immediately
Following the war (superpower status, the United Nations, the economic boom, and changing
Economy).
2. Be introduced to many of the key terms and themes of the period 1945-1989.
3. Become familiar with the other members of their group and begin work on the culminating
Activity.
Learning outcomes:

Students will know:

1. The different vocabulary terms that takes place post world war II and after WWII.
2. They will understand the key concept of each word and the time that specific vocab word took
place.
3. The student will understand the political debates of the post-World War II era; therefore, the
student will be able to Evaluate Roosevelt’s New Deal policies.

1. Read texts by using reading strategies (i.e., prior knowledge, identify key

vocabulary words, context clues, main ideas, supporting details, and text

features: pictures, maps, text boxes).

2. Read for a specific purpose (i.e., detect cause & effect relationships,
compare & contrast information, identify fact v. opinion, and author bias).

1. Respond to historical texts and various types of social studies literature by

inferring, drawing conclusions, making predictions, and formulating historic,

geographic, economic, and civic questions.

2. Process or synthesize information through writing using note taking, graphic

organizers, summaries, proper sequencing of events, and/or formulating

thesis statements that examine why as well as how.

Materials:

For teacher (me): Markers for white board(located on my desk), “the new deal” handout, cause and
effect handout, McGraw-Hill text book “United States history and geography” by McGraw- hill
education, white board, and quiz handout

For students: Flash cards for vocab words, pencil, highlighters for notes (if they do not have
highlighter I will provide them with highlighters), notebook for notes, and poster for cause and effect
group presentation (one per group)

Technology:

For teacher (me): Flash-drive, PowerPoint (for notes), elmo/projector, a set of iPad for students (one
per group), and a computer.

For students: Their assigned iPads for research (school will provide this).

handouts for free and it comes with an answer key (cause and effect handout and the
new deal handout comes from this website)

 The following websites are going to be used by the students on the iPad; these are
scholarly websites that are going to help students find research for their cause and
effect poster project.

Pre-activities: We will all go over the question “how did world war I lead to world war II?”
We will have an interactive discussion and I will write on the board the key causes that led to
World War II. (day one of lesson before notes)
Activities:
 Teacher will put important vocabulary words on the board and students will have to
find the definitions in class by using, McGraw-Hill text book to find the definitions,
students will have to write them in flashcards so they could study at home. If they
don’t finish they could finish it up for homework. (day one of lesson before notes but
after discussion)
 Teacher will use PowerPoint to present important class notes (notes will take up 20
mins of class and will take two days to finish), while students write down the
highlighted words only. (day one and two of lesson)
 I will pass out the “the new deal” handout to each student for the remainder of the
class and they will have to turn it in at the end of the class period. (day two of lesson
after notes)
 Students will get into groups of 3 and teacher will pass out the cause and effect work
sheet of the great depression and they will have to come up with one long term cause,
one short term cause, one long term effect, and one short term effect. They could use
the IPad for research as well as the textbooks, they will have to complete it by the end
of class (day 3 of lesson).
 We will review notes and important vocabulary words, then students will take a quiz
and turn it in by the end of class. (day 4 of lesson)

Assessment:

 I will pass out a 22 question quiz on the great depression to see if they actually gained
knowledge.

Critical vocabulary words:

 New Deal Coalition- an alliance of diverse groups—including Southern whites, African


Americans, and unionized workers—who supported the policies of the Democratic
Party in the 1930s and 1940s.
 New Deal-President Franklin Roosevelt's program to alleviate the problems of the
great Depression, focusing on relief for the needy, economic recovery, and financial
reform
 Dust Bowl-the region, including Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Colorado, and New Mexico,
that was made worthless for farming by drought and dust storms during the 1930’s
 21st Amendment-an amendment ratified on December 5, 1933 that repealed the 18th
Amendment which had mandated nationwide prohibition on alcohol
 "Black Tuesday"-The day prices on the New York Stock Exchange took a nose dive.
 Great Depression-Economic condition market by an extended & severe decline in
production, sales & severe unemployment.
 Hooverville’s-Makeshift communities on the outskirts of cities.
 United Nations- is an international organization formed in 1945 to increase political
and economic cooperation among member countries. The organization works on
economic and social development programs, improving human rights and reducing
global conflicts
 Isolationism- a policy of remaining apart from the affairs or interests of other groups,
especially the political affairs of other countries.
