THE MEDIATOR OF A NEW CONVENANT

Hebrews 8:1-9:28
Key Verse 9:15

I A mediator of the better covenant (8:1-13)

1. What is the point the author is making? (1,2) What is the characteristic of
the true tabernacle? (2)
We have Jesus Christ as our High Priest, We do have a high priest who
is not earthly but sited on the right hand of God. Mk 16:9, Phil 2:9, A true
tabernacle is setup by God Himself. Jesus Christ offered up His body as
a true tabernacle from God. John 3:16. God loved the world that He gave
His only son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have
eternal life. Made by God also means it is everlasting and heavenly
sanctuary.

2. Why did Jesus have to offer himself as a sacrifice? (3, Heb 7:27) Why
should he become the high priest at the sanctuary in heaven? (4,5) In
what respect, is Jesus ministry superior to that of the earthly priests? (6)
By law Jesus Christ was not a Levite, not a descendant of Aaron, Jesus
ministry is founded on better promises, Earthly priests would have to
offer their own sin sacrifices and the people over and over again unlike
Jesus’ sacrifice which was pure and sinless.

3. Why was the new covenant necessary? (7) In what aspects, was the new
covenant superior to the old one? (8-13)
There was something wrong with the first covenant, Jer 31:31-33. It will
be based on the work of the Holy Spirit, not the strength of man. It will be
entirely based on God’s grace and not man’s effort. God will be with us
always, He will take away our sins, and He will bless us and use us. It
will be from within and not without as the Old Testament.

II Jesus the mediator of the new covenant (9:1-28)

4. What was the difference between the Holy place and the Most Holy
place? (1-7) What was the Holy Spirit showing by such a division? (8)
Why was the sacrifice at the first tabernacle imperfect?
It wasn’t able to take away sins forever, people would contact God only
once a year, communion with God was on a short time basis and not
frequently. It’s by God’s grace that we are saved.
5. As a high priest what tabernacle did Jesus go through? What did he
enter the tabernacle with? (11, 12) What did Jesus become through
shedding his blood?
His body through death on the cross, His own blood that was sinless and
without blemish. He became our perfect high priest without blemish and
sin. John 1:29, lamb of God that takes away the sin of the World. It’s not
on our merit but by God’s grace. God has done great work for us, it is
beyond words to express and explain. We can’t put in words what Jesus
Christ has done for us. Thank you Lord Jesus Christ for your Mercy and
Love for us.

6. What was the effect of animal sacrifice? (13) What was the effect of the
blood of Christ? (14) Who did Jesus become through shedding his
blood? (15)
They sanctify them that they are outwardly clean, Jesus Christ became
the mediator of the new covenant. The blood of Jesus cleanses us from
inside out.

7. When does a will become effective? (16, 17) How does this relate with
Jesus’ death by shedding his blood? How did the first covenant become
effective? (18-21, Ex 24:3-8) Why is blood necessary for cleansing of
sins? (22, Lev 17:11)
Death of the first covenant before the second covenant takes place or
effect, also Jesus Christ’s death on the cross ushered in a new covenant,
Moses too sealed the commandments with sprinkling with the blood.

8. Where did Christ offer sacrifice? (23, 24) Why is it not necessary that
Christ offer himself again and again (25-28a)? Why does Christ appear a
second time? (28b)
At the cross when He shed His blood, His blood was final and perfect, He
appears to bring salvation to those who waiting for Him. Our living Hope,
we should wait till He comes to take us home. Just like the five wise
virgins.
