Universal Design for Learning (UDL): For the English Language Learners in my classroom I would allow them
to access the ELL portion of BrainPop to watch the video in their native language. By doing this, my students
will have the overall learning opportunity by understanding the content. By allowing my students to access
the video at home which lets them watch the videos and gain knowledge in the comfort of their own home. A
class set of headphones will also be provided to cut down on distraction.

Lesson idea implementation: The teacher will introduce the study of British Colonial America by using
the BrainPop video, Thirteen Colonies. Prior to displaying the video, the teacher will ask students
questions about the thirteen colonies- “Do you know why the colonies were created?” “What
information do you know about the colonies?” “Why are the colonies important to American

History?” Then the teacher will ask students to remember one new fact about each of the colonies
after they view the video. After viewing the video, students will be encouraged to share the
new facts that they learned about the colonies. The teacher will list these facts on chart paper
and/or the whiteboard. If enough facts are not collected the match the number of students in
the class, the teacher will break students into small groups where they will revisit the video using the
iPads. Each group will remember two more facts for the fact sheet.

Once compiled, each student can select three of the facts that they gathered about the one of the
thirteen colonies. The teacher will record each student as the students describe their facts. The
recording will be finalized into a podcast and placed on the classroom blog for students and parents
to enjoy.

Reflective Practice: Students will conduct further research on one of the thirteen colonies. In this
research, they will gather information on different factors that shaped their colony. These factors
include, but are not limited to, the education of the people, religion, and economic factors. From
there the student will then create a blog post based on this information that they have gathered. In
the blog posts, students will embody their choice of an American Indian, artisan, child, farmer,
indentured servant, landowner, or slave, and they will create a blog post that details how they, as
this colonial individual, might be feeling based on their level of education, their economic status, and
other factors during this time period. This assignment will also be published on the classroom blog for
others to enjoy.
