IB: Making a Community Garden

Community gardens can bring economic benefits both to their gardeners and to their local
communities.

Re- searchers have found that community gardens:

 Contribute to household food budgets by providing a veggie patch
 Support local and surrounding businesses
 Are a low-cost approach to space management
 Lead to reduced crime and vandalism in the local area
Design Brief
Your landscaping and exterior design company has been asked to produce a complete design
(including drawings with measurements) for a community garden space with a block area between
450m2 and 500m2. The council have said that the community garden must at least contain the
following…

1. 1 paved area with enough seating for 10 people

2. 1 rain water tank with a minimum capacity of 1 kilolitre
3. Raised veggie patches
4. 1 fish pond
5. Space for local street artists to express themselves
6. Each garden must contain at least 3 different shapes
Design and Floor Plan Requirements
Paved Seating Area
Within your garden there must be a paved area with seating for picnics and customers of the nearby
coffee shop. Part of the agreement with the council in designing this space is that there must be
seating for a minimum of 10 people, including tables, on a sealed surface. You must consider both the
sealed ground area and the layout of seating and tables.

Water Tank requirements

As part of the South Australian Government’s building rules all new homes must be built with a
rainwater tank with a capacity of 1 kilolitre or more, this rule will be applied to your garden design.

For ergonomic design purposes architects working on this project have decreed that the tank (or
tanks) must be a cylinder to prevent an overload of rectangles in the space. (This is actually beneficial
for your designs) You know how much water must be contained as a minimum, you are to provide
the dimensions for your water storage that meets these regulations and show them on your floor
plan.

Vegetable Patches
This garden must contain vegetable patches that can be accessed by local residents. The dimensions
of the veggie patches must be large enough to allow produce to flourish. There have not been
constraints placed on the sizing or total area for these vegetable patches. You must use some
research to justify the sizing and dimensions of the vegetable patches you include.

Fish Pond
The local council have left the decision on the size of the fish pond to you, the landscape designer.
The only condition is that the pond must be a composite shape.

Street Art Wall

One of the boundary edges of your space must be a solid wall that can be used by local street artists
to bring vibrancy and creativity into the space.

Extension: 2D Computer Design Drawing

floorplanner.com

Using Floor Planner produce 2D representation of your garden design that shows the layout,
positioning, and features of your community garden.

You are required to indicate on your plans the dimensions, and relevant perimeter, area, surface area
and volume of each feature in the garden.
