1. Digital Computer Circuit Design Problem
Circuit Design Noise Observed
1 19 20 19 30 8
2 80 61 73 56 80
3 47 26 25 35 50
4 95 46 83 78 97
H0: The amount of noise for all four designs are the same. (all are equal)
Ha: The amount of noise for the four designs are not all the same. (at least one is different)
a. Is the amount of noise present the same for all four designs? Use alpha = 0.05

From the analysis performed using JMP, we can conclude

that the noise present in each of the four designs are not
all equivalent (H0 is rejected), and that there is at least one
treatment noise mean that is different. This can easily be
seen in the graph, where the statistical means of the
designs are not all near each other; In addition, the F Ratio
(21.7797) is much greater than the p-value (<0.0001*),
meaning the conclusion above is justified. Tukey’s test is
then employed to determine the mean differences.
b. Estimate the overall mean and the treatment effects.
From JMP, the overall mean is 51.4; This can also be calculated by averaging all the noise observed.
For the treatment effects, we just subtract the overall mean from the individual treatment means:
Circuit Design Mean Overall Mean Treatment Effect
1 19.2 51.4 -32.2
2 70.0 51.4 18.6
3 36.6 51.4 -14.8
4 79.8 51.4 28.4
c. Analyze all the residuals from this experiment. Are the basic analysis of variance assumptions satisfied?

(a) Normal Probability Plot (b) Residues vs Predicted (c) Residues vs Circuit Design
(i) The noise error distribution is normal because all the points in (a) are close to the line, with only one outlier.
(ii) The noise error distribution has a constant variance and a has independent points since there is no clear
formation, or relation to any variable, as can be seen in (b) and (c).
From this, it can be concluded that the basic analysis of variance assumptions are satisfied.

2. Insulation Materials Failure Time Problem
Material Failure Time (min.)
1 110 157 194 178
2 1 2 4 18
3 880 1256 5276 4355
4 495 7040 5307 10050
5 7 5 29 2
H0: The failure time for the five insulation materials are all the same. (all are equal)
Ha: The failure time for the five insulation materials are not all the same. (not all are equal)
a. Do all five materials have the same effect on mean failure time?

We can conclude from the analysis performed using JMP

that the time it takes for each of the five insulation
material designs are not all equivalent (H0 is rejected), and
that there is at least one treatment failure mean time that
is different. This can be seen in the graph, where some
but not all the statistical means are near each other; In
addition, the F Ratio (6.1909) is much greater than the p-
value (0.0038*), meaning the conclusion above is justified.
b. Plot the residuals versus the predicted response. What information do these plots convey and what would
you recommend as the next step?

(a) Normal Probability Plot (b) Residues vs Predicted

It can be seen from (a) that the failure time error distribution does not resemble a straight line, meaning it is not
normal in nature. In addition to this, (b) shows that the variance of the collected failure time data is not constant
since the plot has a strong outward-opening funnel like shape. In this case, the next step for performing analysis
should be to transform the data such that it will have a stable variance.
