RESCUE AND SURVIVAL

EQUIPMENTS
The rescue and survival equipment are represented by all the
means designated for saving the crew members, in different
situations.

There are two categories of rescue and survival equipment:

1. Personal Life-saving appliances
2. Survival Crafts and Rescue boats

 1.A Personal life-saving appliances - Lifebuoys
shall be so distributed as to be readily available on both sides of the ship.

• At least one shall be so stowed as to be capable of being rapidly cast

loose, and not permanently secured in any way.
• At least one lifebuoy on each side of the ship shall be fitted with a
buoyant lifeline equal in length to not less than twice the height at which
it is stowed above the waterline in the lightest seagoing condition, or 30
m, whichever is the greater.
• Not less than one half of the total number of lifebuoys shall be provided
with lifebuoy self-igniting lights.
• Not less than two of these shall also be provided with lifebuoy self-
activating smoke signals and be capable of quick release from the
navigation bridge.
• Each lifebuoy shall be marked in block capitals of the Roman
alphabet with the name and port of registry of the ship on which it is
carried.

 1.B. Personal life-saving appliances - Lifejacket

• shall be provided for every person on

board the ship and, in addition:

- a number of lifejackets suitable for

children
- a sufficient number of lifejackets shall be
carried for persons on watch and for use at
remotely located survival craft stations.

Lifejackets shall be so placed as to be readily

accessible and their position shall be plainly
indicated.

 1.C. Personal life-saving appliances - The
immersion suit

• is a protective suit which reduces

the body heat loss of a person wearing
it in cold water.

An immersion suit or an anti-exposure suit

shall be provided for every person assigned
to crew the rescue boat or assigned to the
marine evacuation system party.
 1.D. Personal life-saving appliances - The thermal
protective aid

• is designed for hypothermia protection

during prolonged exposure in life rafts and
rescue boats, keeps survivors warm, dry
and protected against rain, wind and cold.

The survival craft is a craft capable of sustaining the lives of persons in
distress from the time of abandoning the ship. These are lifeboats and life
rafts.
2.A. Lifeboats
There are three types of life boats: open lifeboats Fig.1, (used in the past),
closed life boats Fig.2, (Davit type - disposed one for each side of the
vessel) and free-fall boats Fig.3, (usually at the stern).

 2.C. The rescue boat
The rescue boat (MOB) is a boat designed to rescue persons in
distress and to marshal survival crafts. This could also be
inflatable Fig. 1, or fiberglass Fig. 2
