Param Pujya Shri Ranchhoddasji Bapu was an ageless Saint. He was Divinity incarnate and an ardent
devotee of Lord Ram. He was a tower of strength and source of succour the depressed, distressed
and deprived section of humanity. He strongly advocated that there is no greater religion than
service to humanity. He spearheaded the concept of voluntary service for ameliorating the lot of
humanity. He endeavoured ceaselessly to eradicate and mitigate the sufferings and travails of the
poor and the downtrodden. His pioneering efforts gave birth to the concept of organising free Eye
Camps and relief works during natural calamities in the early 1950s.
With the blessings and inspiration from Param Pujya Gurudev, as he was fondly referred to by his
disciples, a Rural Development Programme for the poorest and the most backward villages in
Vansda taluka of Valsad District, (Gujarat) was started by Dhanvantari Trust circa 1968.

At that time, our health survey revealed many elderly persons, with over-mature cataract floating in
the anterior chamber of the eyes, because they were not operated in time. Neither medical facilities
nor information were available to them. Additionally, their ignorance about cataract being the cause
of their blindness, resistance that timely removal of cataract could restore eyesight and superstition
that their fate was divine retribution, took us more than three years to convince and motivate them
to undergo this simple operation. Our first eye camp was organised in 1972.
Since then, the Trust has organised over 840 eye camps, examined more than 70,000 patients, and
operated more than 37,000.

Before we dwell upon the Hospital’s plans, let us examine the situation in cataract eye-care as is
prevalent in Maharashtra at present:

 Cataract is the biggest cause of blindness across the world.

 In India, out of 1.3 billion people, some 70 crore are suffering from some form of cataract.
 In Maharashtra, the government’s figures are alarming: There are 17 lakh people suffering
from cataract, of which 5 lakh need immediate surgery.
 In the last 12 months alone, around 200 people lost vision in both eyes and 900 lost vision in
one eye due to lack of cataract surgical treatment.
 Govt hospitals across Maharashtra have only 155 eye surgeons, of which 30 didn’t even
know how to do a cataract operation.
 The Central Govt has announced a ‘Cataract-free India’ by the year 2022.

The Sant Shri Ranchhoddasji Bapu Eye Hospital is a 70 bed hospital with a full time ophthalmic
surgeon. In the light of the above, with increased demand due to improved awareness and an
increasing incidence of cataract, the Trust has endeavoured to increase bed-capacity from the
current 70 beds to 140 beds.
A super speciality service like Vitreoretina is being offered out of a new state-of-the-art hospital
building. Other super -specialities like Cornea and Glaucoma are in the offing.
Construction of Private wards are planned.

At Dhanvantari Trust we plan to undertake the following projects, in order to fulfil our Motto : Our
patient is our Lord Himself, Who has granted unto us a priceless opportunity to be of service to Him;
