With a total population of around 4.

88 Lakh as per 2011 census, the Transgender population is

considered one of the most marginalized groups in India. The shortage of shelter is the principal
problem for them in India, and it has been neglected by the Indian Government for a long time
in all the nine-year plans.

It is wrong to judge and discriminate people who may be different from the human-made
stereotype. The Transgender Rights Bill 2016 introduced for discussion is grossly ignorant of
the very issues it is attempting to address. One of the primary need of a human being is a
house which gives them a sense of security. It is challenging for transgenders in a city where
biases make life extremely difficult to rent a house let alone owning it.

As of now though there is no particular enacted law providing for the protection of property
interests of the transgenders in India. The fundamental human rights adopted by the UN also
states that transgenders should have the same rights as other genders in any society. Thus,
they cannot be denied housing or discriminated against it.
