Question 2
Dilution:
Na2CO3.xH2O (s) + aq Na2CO3 (aq) + xH2O (l)
A solution of this acid was prepared by dissolving a certain mass of Na2CO3.xH2O solid in
250cm3 distilled water in 250 cm3 volumetric flask. The solution is labelled FB 2.
Data:
Titration:
Na2CO3 (aq) + 2HCl (aq) → 2NaCl (aq) + H2O (l) + CO2 (g)
Burette was filled with solution FB 3.
25.0 cm3 of the solution of Na2CO3 (aq) was transferred into a conical flask using a pipette. A
few drops of a suitable indicator was added and titration was continued to first obtain a rough
volume.
1
a) Determine the moles of HCl from FB3 solution that reacted with 25.0cm3 FB 2 solution.
e) Determine the relative molecular mass of Na2CO3.xH2O (s) using the answer in part (d)
and the mass of Na2CO3.xH2O (s) dissolved in 250cm3 distilled water. Then determine
the value of x.
(given relative atomic mass Na =23.0 ; C=12.0 ; H= 1.00 ; O= 16.0 )
