The law provides for a number of documentary and procedural requirements for marriage.

Requirements shall be discussed in the foregoing:

A. Civil Wedding in the Philippines – Procedures & Requirements

In the Philippine setting, a civil wedding is cheaper, faster, and a more convenient alternative

to church wedding. It is usually conducted by a judge of the RTC court, but it can also be

performed by the Mayor of a city. Due to time constraint and limited financial resources, they

proponents opted civil than church wedding

i. The following are the requirements and procedures for a civil wedding:

 Marriage license

 Certified True Copy of Baptismal Certificate or Birth Certificate of both parties.

 Community tax certificates (CEDULA) of both applicants.

 1 ID photo (colored background or black and white) of each applicant.

 Certificate of Attendance to a wedding seminar. - Couples are required to attend pre-

marriage counseling and family planning seminar which are usually conducted in the city hall

and are required before you can claim your marriage license.
ii. Letter of Intent to Marry. As the name suggests, the letter should express the parties’

intent to marry. It shall indicate the couples’ names, signatures and preferred wedding

date.

Other requirements:

iii. Certified True Copy of Death Certificate of deceased spouse.- for widows / widowers

iv. Copy of Final Decree of Absolute Divorce or Court Decision and Absolute Decree of

Finality from the court.- for applicants with previous marriages

On February 1, 2017, the proponents assisted the couple subject of this advocacy in the

application for Cenomar, Marriage license, and NSO-issued birth certificates. On February 10, 2017,

the CENOMAR and the NSO-issued certificates, were obtained. The marriage license on the hand is

expected to be released by March 7, 2017.

After securing the necessary documents, the soon-to-be spouses attended the required

seminar in the City Hall last February 21, 2017. The proponents were not able to accompany them to

the seminar due to scheduled midterm exam in Law School. Despite that fact, the proponents

monitored them from time to time through phone calls.

In the said seminar, important matters regarding establishment of family were discussed.

These include brief overview on married life, family planning,rearing of children and guides to a

lasting marriage.

Finally, the soon-to-be-spouses is scheduled to be one on March 31, 2017.
