The Hermit and His Padi Seeds
Many years ago, there lived a hermit in a forest of Kalimantan. He did not grow food but
depended on the jungle fruit to survive. Soon, there was a drought and all the plants and fruit trees in the
jungle died.
The old man had nothing to eat now, so he turned to be a beggar. He went to a nearby village
trying to get some food. At first, the villagers were happy to help him. However, when he came
continually, they refused to give him food anymore. They told him to grow his own food.
One day, while the hermit was sitting in his hut, sad and hungry, he began to think about growing
his own food. Just then, a boatman stopped by. The boatman took pity on the hermit and gave him some
padi seeds.
Before the boatman went away, he said, ”These seeds will grow and give you everlasting harvests
if you work very hard. If you are tired of the work, the padi plants will turn into weeds.”
The old hermit worked hard to clear the land and sowed the seeds before the rains came.
Strangely, after a short period of time, the padi was ready for harvesting. The old man got a lot of rice
from the harvest. After each harvest, the plants grew back again right away. When the villagers heard
about the hermit and his wonderful padi, they flaked to his padi – field and took home as much padi as

With the advent of globalization, international marriages have been more popular these days.
However, there are multiple downsides of this trend than marrying native of one’s own country, which
will now be explained.
The strongest argument against such marriage could be language barrier. To illustrate, a Sri  A
Lankan man might find it difficult to communicate effectively with his Chinese wife if he has limited l
language skill. If such couple has limited language proficiency, they would have difficulty expressing l
their feelings, instead may end up their conversation with dissatisfaction and misunderstandings.
The other disadvantage of getting married with overseas foreigner could be a cultural shock. It I
is well known that the tradition and customs of different countries vary from one another. As from the t
example above, that Chinese lady is likely to face many difficulties getting used to her Sri Lankan in- e
laws’ lifestyle. This can lead to extreme discomfort and more family issues.
m
Admittedly, some maintain that tying knot with someone from foreign country could be more
s
exciting as it is fun to explore each other’s undiscovered traditions and also it provides opportunities for

8 
international travel. However, this could be true for some couples but not always the case. Learning new
etiquettes everyday could be more demanding. Likewise, there are growing issues of dual citizenships and
visa problems.
To summarize, the drawbacks of an international wedding, such as language problem and
difficulty in adjusting to foreign culture and tradition eventually outweigh its benefits. Therefore, I firmly
believe that one should marry a citizen of one’s own nationality if he or she wants to avoid all those/these
difficulties.

The ethical issue about cheating is perhaps as old as education itself. The whole discussing
generally ends with the question of whether cheating or letting others to cheat us during an exam is
ethically wrong. Concerning the latter, there have been two opposing sides of opinion.
Some people say that letting other to cheat is ethically right. They say they need to help one
another. If other people let us copy their works, then there is a good reason to give similar assist to them.
They also argue that if they cannot do a test, that is not any way their fault. In fact, they don’t believe the
test. Tests according to them mean nothing. So cheating doesn’t matter at all.
Meanwhile, those oppose the practice ‘mutual cheating’ regard the habits as unacceptable, and
will do no good to others. They say people will not learn for themselves if we always allow them to cheat
us. Cheating each other’s work will make everyone get similar results and that sort of results will certainly
be misleading. They who do not agree with letting other to cheat believe in helping themselves and argue
others to do their own work.
There is no final answer as to whether letting others to cheat is ethically or socially wrong. In fact,
the practice of cheating is still common, and may have become a custom or habit, and even a serious
problem in many classrooms as in many classes.

Exams are a fair way of testing students. Do you agree?

Every year thousands of students take important exams which can decide their future. For
example, students have to pass exams with satisfactory grades in order to get a place in a university.
However, are exams a fair way of judging a student’s ability? Some views are contradictive.
On the one hand, exams seem fair. The questions are the same for all students. Also, the exams
are marked according to a strict scheme and usually by more than one examiner. Furthermore, students in
the whole schools do the exams at the same time and under conditions.
On the other hand, there are some drawbacks with the exams. Despite some students deserving to
pass, they might be so nervous on the big day that they make a mess of the exam. Moreover, there may be
other reasons, such as illness which affects a student’s performance in an exam. An alternative to exams
would be a system of continuous assessment of coursework by teachers during the year although this
would mean more regular testing and more work for teachers. There would be a greater opportunity for
students to copy work too.
To sum up, exams are not the ideal way of testing students and the idea of assessing students’
work over a longer period is becoming more popular. In my opinion, the best system would be a mixture
of the two-50% exams and 50% course work.
