Historia

History
AI-Basit remained in Moslem hands until Femando 111 handed it over it to Alarcon’s Council as village, In
1282, Albacete became part of the Lordship of Los Manuel. The increasing population together with its
development led the first Marquess of Villena to grant it the consideration of Villa in 1375 and, therefore,
its independence from Chinchilla.
In the 16th century the growth continued, with a population approaching 5000 inhabitants, from which
point diverse monasteries in the Villa were set up and the construction of the Church of San Juan began,
The 18th century is a period of demographic, agricultural and commercial development. During the Suc-
cession War, the city took the side for Philip V who, on 6th of March of 1 710, granted the privilege of an
annual fair, which third centenary is in full elaboration process that will culminate with big commemora-
tive events in 2010.
One of the most significant political events for Albacete took place in the 19th century, In 1833 the provin-
ce of Albacete was created, with territories from the former provinces of Cuenca, Murcia and La Mancha,
granting the city with the honour of province’s capital. Throughout this century, the city extended its
urban framework with new streets as the Paseo de la Cuba, Carcelén, Isaac Peral or Salamanca, The rai-
lway and the street lighting arrived. At the end of century Albacete defends Isabel II interests against the
Carlistas and, in 1862, it obtains the title of City.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the City experienced an extraordinary growth; modernist buildings
were constructed in streets such as Tesifonte Gallego, Marques de Molins and Lodares Passage, The Spa-
nish Civil War turned Albacete in the Headquarters of the Intemational Brigades and the Air Republican
Force. With the promulgation of the Statute of Autonomy in 1982, Albacete became part of the Auto-
nomous Region of Castilla-La Mancha, being the Top Court of Justice established in our capital. Today,
Albacete is a very well connected industrial, with fairground events and University City. Active and with
a bright future, The University, the Conference Palace, the Scientific and Technological Park, the Botanic
Garden, the Airport or the AVE (HIGH SPEED TRAIN), they are principal parts of a city that grows strongly.

Catedral
