Energy Balance around the conveyor washer

The washer conveyor is a washing technology designed for cleaning the dirt attached to the feed Elephant

foot yam (EFY). The energy requirement of the conveyor washer that could accommodate the given feed

of 10000 kg can be calculated as follows.

The washer conveyor has a capacity of 300-800 kg/hr. To accommodate the desired feed of 10 tons in a

day operation,

416.67𝑘𝑔
× 24 ℎ𝑟𝑠 𝑜𝑝𝑒𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 = 10000 𝑘𝑔 𝐸𝐹𝑌
ℎ𝑟

From industrial applications with the same range of capacity rate, the washing equipment has a power

capacity of 5000W. Thus,

Energy requirement of washer conveyor = 5KW

In general, the electrical power required to drive a washer conveyor depends on the belt conveyor design

characteristics, and its length ( Pang,Y. et al 2011), which is specified under the equipment design section.

Peeling machine mechanism

The peeling machine technology works on a mechanism that was developed with an

intention to reduce cost and working time consumption. It works in a manner that a revolving

blade is held by a support arm and is rotated by the same motor. Additionally, the revolving blade
is movable along the surface of the yam by the arm and the revolving blade is brought into contact

with the surface.

Peeling machines’ energy requirement can be calculated using the washed Elephant foot yam which has

a total mass of 9900 kg.

A total power of 1hp and a range from 300-500 kg/hr capacity (Shree Hari)of feed is necessary for the

peeling machine to operate. For the peeling machine to hold the total mass washed EFY,

412.5 𝑘𝑔
× 24ℎ𝑟𝑠 𝑜𝑝𝑒𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 = 9900 𝑘𝑔 𝑤𝑎𝑠ℎ𝑒𝑑 𝐸𝐹𝑌
ℎ𝑟

The peeling machine has a power capacity of 1hp and the energy requirement of the peeling machine

can be calculated. Thus,

Energy requirement of peeling machine = 0.746 kW

Energy Balance around the rotary vacuum filter

The Rotary Vacuum Drum Filter is one of the oldest filters applied to the chemical process

industry. It is the most widely used of the continuous filters where it accounts for design variations,

including operation as either a pressure filter or a vacuum filter. Therefore, rotary vacuum drum

filters are certainly used in to the best part of solid liquid separation process.

In most starch producing industries, the rotary vacuum filter has a vacuum pressure that ranges

from 0.05-0.06 MPa (Doing).

𝑃𝑣𝑎𝑐𝑢𝑢𝑚 = 60000 𝑃𝑎

From figure 4.2 of the mass balance section, the mass of the filtrate is 19551 kg H2O.
Using the ρ of water at 25°C, the energy requirement to maintain the vacuum inside the pump can be
calculated as follows:

Rotary filter 2

The rotary vacuum filter can be used in all kinds of starch production line. Its main function

is to remove the water from the starch pulp. The rotary vacuum filter has a vacuum pressure that

ranges from 0.04-0.06 MPa (Doing).

𝑃𝑣𝑎𝑐𝑢𝑢𝑚 = 60000 𝑃𝑎
From figure 4.5 of the mass balance section, the mass of the filtrate is 85015.26 kg H2O.
