SGTA Update

Notes from meeting with Yolanda Mendoza (Asst. Supt. of HR) at the SGTA Rep Council Meeting
2/27/2018

 District School Safety Trainings

o In March (approximately): District staff will meet with SG Police Chief to
conduct walk-throughs of all sites to identify potential security problems
o In April or August: 2-hour staff training
o 2 more intensive drills will be scheduled for next year
o Trainings with parents will also be scheduled

 Paychecks:
o Check attached memo for info about how to read your paycheck stub info
o Direct Deposit enrollees who earn extra duty pay (green card, period subbing):
you may get a hardcopy check when your timecard is not turned into HR (not the
office manager) by the 25th of the month

 Retirement:
o SGTA and the District are planning a retirement party to honor the retirees – more
info later
o The original 4 –month salary offer is still available to anyone who decides to
retire this year; the offer is good until the end of the school year
o Retirees can choose any broker to handle their money (prior to this, the district
had only one assigned broker that everyone had to work with to receive their
funds)

 STRS:
o Leaves of Absence: Teachers can buy back their time missed - contact STRS
o To buy back time of service, STRS offers payment plans and lump sum
payments; check into using pre-tax money to purchase the time
o Create a STRS account to keep informed about your retirement

 Seniority List:
o The information is always public
o Tie breaker criteria does not carry over; in other words, the tie breaker points
from the past will not be valid; new criteria (with District and SGTA input) will
be established every time when needed and new points given accordingly
o The last published seniority list should not have included the tie breaker points
because those points are no longer valid into the future
o Admin cannot earn more than 3 years of seniority in our district, UNLESS they
already served as a teacher in our district (then your seniority keeps accumulating)
o Hire Dates: your hire date is based on your first day of work (which is usually the
first day of new teacher training; but your hire date could be earlier if you are
required to attend a mandatory training before that date)
o If you break hire status (leave SGUSD), you have 39 months (3 years) to return as
an employee AND KEEP your original hire date.
o The district is looking into scheduling (and possibly funding) some additional
certificated training (example: Autism training, BCLAD) that may affect tie
breaker criteria

 Temporary Status:
o A temporary position (LCAP, Title 1, Reading support, job share) are non-
permanent positions that can go away.
o Job sharing elementary teachers: The district will no longer “hold” a full-time
teacher’s position (the district used to create temporary positions in order to
“save” the permanent full-time teacher position and teachers filling that temporary
space would remain as temporary status for years with no seniority)
 FYI: SGTA will be getting more clarification from CTA regarding job
shares.
o If a temporary teacher becomes permanent, she/he can keep the original hire date
(when the person entered the district as a temp), but she/he will be a
probationary II teacher, no matter how many years she/he was in the district as a
temporary teacher

 Staffing Update for 2018-2019

o Most likely GAB teachers will be transferred to JMS due to lower enrollment
o The transferred teachers will most likely be from Math and Language Arts

 District Staffing Changes

o Certificated Payroll Questions: call Gloria Castillo x5435 (if you have questions
about why your paycheck is different from month to month, you can contact her)
o Credentialing and Job positions: call Leonardo Solorio x5459
