CHAPTER I

PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

This chapter presents the background and rationale of the study

Introduction

Motivation can affect our daily lives. It can be good or bad. Motivating

someone with positive perspective can be make something possible but motivating

someone with negative perspective can affect the way to success. According to

Merriam Webster, Motivation is the act or process of giving someone a reason for

doing something or a force that causes someone to do something. Teachers should

be competent and knowledgeable in order to impart the knowledge they could give

to their students effectively. Effective teaching is concerned with the student as a

person and with his general development. The teacher must recognize the

individual differences among the students and adjust instructions that best suit to

the learners. As educators, we play varied and vital roles in the classroom.

Nowadays, teenagers mostly look for a motivation to do something

especially in school. Teachers can help the students to work hard. Teachers

motivation is important to every student, it can give willingness to the students to

participate in the school activities and also it can affect their absences in class. The

teachers must know their styles on how they can handle or approached the

student. By giving some activities that can make their mind become active and by

giving rewards who attempt to increase the vital student motivation. When the
student is motivated, the lessons will easily take place. Motivating students to learn

is very challenging on the part of the teachers.

We all know that attendance is one of the strongest predictors of a

students success. Attendance is important because student will succeed when they

attend school consistently. Teachers has a big role to the students life. It is difficult

to the teachers because they need to exert effort to lead the students into a life that

satisfying. When teachers have their patience their attendance will be motivated

and the students get to enjoy the lessons of the teacher.

Statement of the Problem

The thrust of this study is to determine the Effects of the Teacher’s

Motivational to the Students Attendance of the Grade 10 – Mabini Students of

General Santos City National High School.

1. What are the motivational approaches used by the teacher?

2. What is the academic performance of the students?

3. Is the motivational approaches of the teachers has a significant effect to

the academic performance of the students?

4. What programs can be formulated to help solve this problem?


Significance of The Study

To the Students, they will able to identify their strengths and weaknesses from the

applied strategy of their Teacher that may affect their performance. They can get

some information that could help them. For them to realize that they need to go in

school and do hard works so that their cutting classes will reduced as well as their

absences.

To theTeachers, it will help them to be aware of their students’ in learning. This will

serve as their guide to improvise another method of teaching that will lead their

students to a better quality of learning. The effect of teaching is concerned with the

students as a person and with his General Development. This research will also help

them to find out the possible solutions of their students absences.

To the Parents, they can help also in supporting their children to do good in school.

The study will lessen their problem in terms of the absences of their children and

also the financial support they provide will not be wasted.

To the School Administration, they will provide trainings and seminars to the

teachers to improve their motivational approaches. Class observation maybe done to

monitor teachers motivational approaches used.

To the Future Researcher, they will identify the gap of this research and fulfil what

is lacking about the absences of the student. This study will also help and provide

them knowledge relating problems of absences.


Scope and delimitation of the study

Primarily, this study shall only focus its attention on the effects of Teacher’s

Motivational Approach to the Students Attendance of Grade 10 – Mabini student of

General Santos City National High School.

The student of this study are 35 students and 7 subject teacher from Grade

10 – Mabini of General Santos City National High School.

The respondents are all teachers and students from the Basic Education

Curriculum.

Definition of Terms

The following key terms have been more clearly and conceptually and

operationally defined for the readers further understanding within the scope of this

study.

Motivational Approach

Conceptually, it is the label we give to processes the energize and direct

behaviour towards particular goals. Motivational effects the strength of behaviours,

persistence of behaviours , and directions of behaviour choosing which behaviour

to make. Motivational Approach for us is to encourage the students to be motivate

in studies. By doing some activities that can work their minds. Encourage students

get them creative draw connection to real life.

Operationally,
Students Attendance

Conceptually, it depends on students being actively engaged supportive of

each other. It is the production function or input-output approach do not consider

student attendance as an independent variable. The importance of the students

and the lack of a positive influence of school input measure such as the Teacher,

Pupil Ratio and Expenditure per pupil are apparent.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURES AND STUDIES

Theoretical Framework

Abstract

This chapter describes the theoretical background to , and the

development and use of , an Approaches-to-Studying Inventory. This inventory

covers the two main components consistently found to be predictive of academic

success-organized study methods and active learning processes –- (Weinstein &

Underwood, 1985)—but it also includes a series of motivational components. It is ,

of course, commonplace to attribute levels of attainment to the degree of effort

exerted which ,in turn, is explained in terms of the motivational characteristics of

the learner . But the research based on the use of this inventory goes further. It

indicates clearly that here are distinctive forms of motivation which affect the

outcome of learning both quantitatively and qualitatively. The differing forms of

motivation are associated with contrasting learning processes and, so , with

qualitatively different outcomes. Teachers are the key actors who shape the

learning environment and whose main tasks include motivating students to learn.

Teachers can differ in the way in which they try to motivate students to learn and

their motivational strategies can vary from autonomy-supportive to controlling. The

present study explored how teachers’ personal beliefs and contextual factors

related to their self- reported autonomy-supportive or controlling motivational

strategies. Nine grade six teachers at schools with varying student populations

were interviewed. Based on their self- reported motivational strategies, two clusters

of teachers were distinguished: teachers who mainly reported controlling


motivational strategies. The strategies of autonomy- supportive teachers aligned

well with their personal beliefs and preferences, whereas some teachers in the

controlling cluster would prefer more autonomy-supportive strategies. Underlying

reasons for more controlling teaching strategies were mainly contextual, including

‘factors from above’ such as national standards or high-stakes testing, but mainly

‘factors from below’ referring to negative perceptions of students’ abilities,

behaviour, background characteristics or motivation. implacations are drawn and

suggestions for further research are provided. The past decade has witnessed an

increase in research on teacher motivation which has been proved a crucial factor

closely related to a number of variables in education such as student motivational,

educational reform , teaching practice and teachers’ psychological fulfilment and

well- being. To address the constant call for teacher motivation research, this paper

attempt to pose a comprehensive review of teacher motivation studies conducted

from diversified theoretical perspectives. Five research areas related to teacher

motivation research have been identified: influencing factors of teacher motivation;

teacher motivation and teaching effectiveness; teacher motivation and student

motivation; teacher motivation research across different disciplines; and the

instruments for assessing teacher motivation. Based on a critique of existing

literature in terms of theoretical perspectives, research methodology, research

content and concerns about contextual issues, potential directions for future

research are finally proposed. (WRONG!)


CHAPTER III

METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the methods of research and procedures that

will be used in conducting the study. These include the research design, research

locale, respondents and the research instrument and research procedures of the

study.

Research Design

This was mainly a descriptive study that was conducted to determine

the Effects of the Teacher’s Motivational to the Students Attendance of Grade 10

Mabini of General Santos City National High School. It was anticipated that this

study was best undertaken with a mixed methodology.

Research Locale

The study was conducted at General Santos City National High School

specifically to the grade 10 Mabini students located at J.P. Rizal Street Calumpang

General Santos City.

Respondents of the Study

In this study the population comprised of the students from General

Santos City Nation High School. In research terminology, population is defined as all

members of any well-defined class of people, events or objects. It is a large group

about the generalization is made. The method of accessible population was


regarded feasible in this study. All student of Grade 10- Mabini were selected as

samples of the study.
