ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY & UNIVERSAL DESIGN

Transformational tools in learning
As we seek to address the growing needs of education it is vital that educators create a pathway to develop
and encourage independent learning. In addressing the diverse learner population of today, there are two key
components of curriculum and instructional design that should be considered. Those components are
incorporating Assistive technology (AT) and Universal Design principles (UDL).

AN EDUCATORS JOURNEY
Meghan Blackburn, MEd
Instructional Assistive Technology Facilitator
Lexington One School District, Lexington, SC

At the 2018 SC Assistive Technology Expo, Meghan

shared her journey as she embarks upon the task of
equipping teachers to utilize technology to empower
a generation of independent learners within her
school district. Meghan’s session focused on using iPad accessibility features to support UDL teaching
strategies in the K-12 classroom. UDL strategies are instructional methods and tools used by educators to
ensure that all students have an equal opportunity to learn. The strategies are aligned with the UDL
framework which is based on a curriculum that includes three guiding principles to provide 1) Multiple
means of representation or ways to present and deliver information, 2) Multiple means of expression or
ways to communicate and disseminate , and 3) Multiple means of engagement or ways to create an inclusive
learning environment (http://www.cast.org). In Megan’s district the iPad is used 1:1 for students and
educators. One of Meghan;’s goals are to train and advise educators to utilize and incorporate accessibility
features of the iPad as an assistive technology tool. Meghan is a trailblazer in education. Her full
presentation can be found at tinyurl.com/scatp2018.

WHAT IS ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY

Assistive technology (AT) is any item, piece of equipment, software program, or product system that is used
to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of persons with disabilities. Simply stated assistive
technology are technological tools to enable diverse populations to be independent learners. (https://www.atia.org).

Technological Applications for Diverse Populations
Assistive Technology and Universal Design for Learning: Information & Reflection
Spring 2018

Reflecting on the past few weeks of the course I have gained valuable information on creating an inclusive
learning environment. Understanding specific needs of diverse learners and the tools and technology to
enable them to be independent learners has been transforming for me as an educator.

The tools and resources gained throughout the course has provided me with the knowledge to incorporate
what I have learned into delivering and learning of information. Now that I have the tools necessary, I will
begin implementation first in the home with my children with the use of their tablets. My initial plan
includes downloading relevant applications to increase their reading skills in the areas of comprehension,
articulation, and general read along practice.

For my adult learners, I will seek to incorporate the principles of UDL in instruction. I will seek out ways to
use assistive technology as part of my training which will be something new for me. My previous training
included using the available tools but now I will seek assistive technology to create a more diverse
environment for learners.

The resources shared from the instructor and my peers have been valuable.

Although I’ve been multitasking with being a mom, wife, working in Real Estate while seeking full
employment opportunities, this had been a great course!!
