Once a year, we let the photographs tell the
story, silencing temporarily the cacophony of
computer key clicking in favor of the zing ba-

by the Indy
Indy’s image-meister, Paul Wellman.
It’s been a heck of a year, running from the
protest marches that surrounded the new
president to December’s wild-card wildfire.
In between government meetings, sports,
and portraits was an assignment covering
a bee extraction. “I’ve photographed these
before but it was the first time I had to wear
a beekeeper’s suit,” he recalled. “The bee guy

THOMAS FIRE
SIR THOMAS THE HELLACIOUS: The Thomas Fire has burned for more
than three weeks, but it got really scary just before dawn on Saturday,
December 16, as it raged down the hillsides toward Montecito, pushed
by 65-mile-per-hour winds. This is what San Ysidro Canyon looked like at
5:30 that morning (1). After the fire, the next nightmare will be the mud
and ash running off the denuded hillsides, such as this one by Casitas
Pass (2). Fire departments from 17 states sent personnel to fight the
Thomas Fire. Here, crews from Arroyo Grande, Santa Lucia, Vandenberg,
and Bend, Oregon, cut a line in Toro Canyon; it’s backbreaking work on
steep slippery slopes in close quarters (3). Sometimes the frightening
6
and eerie can also be flat-out beautiful, as Thornton Fire Chief Everett
Watkins — captured resting by East Mountain Drive — demonstrates 7
(4). Even though air quality dipped to positively hazardous depths during
the fire, some athletes — intrepid or foolhardy — continued to train,
such as this cyclist on Via Real in Carpinteria (5). Firefighting airplanes
may draw media attention, but it’s the helicopters who do the lion’s share
of aerial bombardment, dropping water and retardant from buckets such
as these (6). Highway 192 has many different names, but throughout the
Thomas Fire, it was the southern boundary over which the flames did not
pass. But as this photo shows, it got damn close (7). Sometimes you have
to improvise, like this firefighter, who mounted this pedestal to douse
a burning palm tree by San Ysidro Ranch to deal with the lack of water
pressure (8).

WHITTIER FIRE
REMEMBER THE WHITTIER: Though overwhelmed in scope and scare
tactics by the Thomas Fire, the Whittier Fire rattled our cages for quite
