THE UNIVERSITY OF THE WEST INDIES

ST. AUGUSTINE, TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO

Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering

Faculty of Engineering
MENG1006 Introduction to Engineering
Semester 1, Undergraduate, Year 1, Level 1

Pre/Co-requisites: N/A
Course Type: Core
Credits: 2
Mode of Delivery: Face-to-Face

1. Course description

An introduction to the following: historical development of engineering; formation of the engineer;

role and functions of engineers and professional organisations; technical communications; ethics;
liability; safety; legal forms of association; contracts; company law; intellectual property; engineering
economics and business operations; infrastructure; energy systems and economics, environment and
sustainable development. Scope of safety engineering. Hazardous materials used in engineering
practice.

2. Rationale

In this technologically driven age the role of the engineer goes beyond the old concept of someone
who is simply proficient in the technical details of design, operation and maintenance of structures
and equipment, and related processes and systems. The modern engineer, more so than his/her
earlier counterpart, must have a more holistic appreciation of the social, environmental and
economic impact of his/her work and the interdependence of the modern world. This course
“locates” the place of engineering in society and introduces the students to concepts and areas
beyond technical design, operation and maintenance, that are involved in the practice of the
engineering profession.

3. Course Aims and Objectives

The general aim of this course is to provide the student with a broad background of the engineering
profession, its place in development and to ensure that they understand the need to express
themselves properly.

Specific Objectives

1. Introduce students to the history of engineering, the education and practice of the
professional engineer;
2. Make students aware of the broad scope of the operations and practice of the profession of
engineering;
3. Make students aware of the role of engineering in social and economic development
4. Make students aware of the ethical and social responsibility of engineers;
5. Introduce the fundamental concepts and principles of creative thinking, innovation,
economics and sustainability, common threads of engineering design.
