2 Overview
Voice services over Adaptive Multi-user Channels on One Slot (VAMOS), is a technology
to improve network capacity by multiple voice users reusing ARFCN time slot.
VAMOS technology enables two or more users utilize the identical channel resource
simultaneously. So what kind of different users to be picked becomes the key factor for
the performance of VAMOS. These two users should keep normal calling and endure the
interference from each other. That’s why at least one of the VAMOS pairing users should
have interference suppression capability. Whether MS supports VAMOS is actively
reported, which is indicated in Classmark3 message that includes two fields: VAMOS and
DARP capabilities. BSC can obtain the message from the signaling.
VAMOS has two types: VAMOS I and VAMOSII. DARP has three levels valued by 0,1,
and 2. VAMOSI, VAMOSII and 2-level DARP MS can directly be VAMOS paired. The
1-level DARP MS with no VAMOS capability is the SAIC MS.
The survey shows as of 2011, the penetration rate of SAIC MS in the developing
countries has reached 50%; and 70% in developed counties. Some MSs do not report its
actual capabilities in ClassMark3 message, by which the BSC is informed that the
VAMOS and DARP capabilities of the MSs are 0 by decoding. Such MSs have to be
checked their SAIC capabilities by MUTE SAIC detection. If SAIC is supported, the MSs
are MUTE SAIC ones, which can be VAMOS paired.
3 Technical Description
When BSC support Mute SAIC detection, if the MS reports that it’s conventional one and
no corresponding capability can be found inside BSC, BTS then is informed to perform
SAIC detection on the MS.
Once BTS receives message with MUTE SAIC detection mark, it starts SAIC
performance detection for the MS, firstly estimates the downlink radio condition that must
be good RQ(receive quality) and receive level in suitable range, and then sending
α-QPSK testing signal periodically to MS, the test signal is the DL interference of
SCPIR=-3.5.Finally BTS analyze the RQ value before and after interference, if the RQ
result is better, MS is decided to SAIC capability, otherwise MS is decided to no SAIC
capability.
After detection finished, BTS informs BSC about the SAIC capability of the MS by a new
message. BSC can record the capability for the reference of VAMOS pairing. The cell’s
switch “Whether to support MUTE SAIC capability detection” decides whether to support
the feature. See the detection flow by the IMSI as following

Before enable the feature of VAMOS, active this feature can make preparations for SAIC
MS pairing.

The DL receiving quality is becoming poor during a period of time after enabling this
feature. That’s because a -3.5db interference signal is sent to detect MS capability when
checking whether the MS is SAIC one.
