Physical Geography

Physical Geography is the study of things that occur naturally in the environment. Examples include:
volcanoes, earthquakes, continental drift, mountain building , rocks, faulting , weather, climate,
erosion, lakes, rivers, fossils, vegetation, soils, flora and fauna, glaciers…etc..

The goal of the Physical Geography unit is to learn about Canada's 15 Ecozones. Each Ecozone is a
combination of various elements of geography displayed as convenient regions of study.

We will learn about Geologic History and why it is important to the study of Geography, how the Earth
was formed, the Earth’s various layers from surface to core, and how the inside layers move the
outside layers (plate tectonics in continental drift).

All ideas learned in Geography are connected. For instance as the plates on the surface of the earth
move and bump into each other, earthquakes occur, mountains build, and volcanoes erupt.

A German scientist named Alfred Wegner came up with the idea that the plates are moving
(continental drift).
