A look inside the Earth

Our planet has been described as a ball of rock circling a minor star in a deep, distant corner of the galaxy.
According to geologists, it is a dynamic creation which exhibit a long history of activity in change, and a
promise of things to come.

Let's take a look at the Earth in more detail. It has a diameter of 12754 km and a surface area of510 000
000km2, three quarters of which 361 000 000km2 is covered by Oceans. The average depth of the oceans is3
803m with the great depth in the Marianas trench at 11 035m. The oceans contain1 280 00 000 km3 of water. If
the earth was flat, this water with cover it to a depth of 2 750m.

However, the Earth is not flat. The continent's rise above the waters of the ocean to an average rate of 840m in
the maximum height of 8 848m at Mount Everest. Land areas total 149 000 000km2. The point where the
oceans and continents meet are known as “ continental shelves ”. There are rock tags identified them as part of
the continent, but the fact that they are flooded defined them as part of the ocean period if the continental shelf,
which lie beneath less than 185m of water, were exposed, they would add an additional 28 400 000 km2 to the
land.
