Course Description and Rationale


In this course, students will examine people, places, and environments at the local, regional,
national, and international scales from the spatial and ecological perspectives of geography.
Students will study the influence of geography on events of the past and present with an
emphasis on contemporary issues. The course will touch on the physical, cultural, environmental,
social, political and economic aspects of geography in different regions around the world.
Students will use what they have learned in this class to apply geographical knowledge in their
upcoming social studies classes and college careers. Aside from the academic rational of this
class, students will be able to understand geography in a new light and have the tools to become
global aware citizens.

Course Objectives:
1.) To understand the importance of geography as it relates to social studies
2.) To effectively use a variety of primary and secondary source materials such as
contemporary and historic maps, satellite images, photographs, graphs, map sketches, and
diagrams.
3.) To gain spatial perspective skills
4.) To identify the role of the U.S. free
enterprise system
5.) To improve student’s use of problem
solving and decision making skills

Late Work Policy for My Class:


Students who turn in late work will automatically be deducted 10% of their overall grade for that
assignment. Failure to turn in work by the end of that week, will be given an automatic zero for
that assignment. Students who are absent for an assignment or test for any reason, may schedule
a time to complete the work missed no later than one week.

Absence/Tardiness:
Regular attendance is essential for a student to make the most of his or her education. Absences
from class may result in disruption of a student’s mastery of the instructional materials;
therefore, the student and parent should make every effort to attend school daily. Tardiness is not
accepted, as it may disrupt other students learning.

Classroom Rules:

2.) Be on time, prepared, and ready to learn every day
3.) Be respectful towards your classmate’s opinions
4.) Be cooperative and willing to participate
5.) No food or drinks while in the classroom
