FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT
Dear Parishioners,
SCRIPTURE: Our first reading from
Second Book of Chronicles tells of the
destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem.
Many were deported to Babylon. Note the
Psalm (136) puts this exile into context.
But rescue comes from an unexpected
source – Cyrus, the King of Persia, a non-
Jew, orders the Temple in Jerusalem to be
restored.
St Paul in his letter to the Ephesians
reminds us that it is not through our own
efforts that we are saved, but through the
love, compassion and mercy of God in
Christ Jesus. He also states: “we are God’s
work of art”!
St John in his Gospel tells us that it is
through Jesus being lifted up on his cross
that we are saved. We are reminded by
Moses lifting up the serpent in the desert
to save the people. As ever, St John speaks
of the struggle between darkness and light
indicating the human conflict between
good and evil. The text also talks about
judgement and condemnation. God
condemns no one. People condemn
themselves by adapting a negative
attitude. God sent us a light, his own son,
Jesus. If people get lost it is because they
haven’t accepted the light. The fault is not
God’s but ours.
Let us not forget the last sentence of St
Paul’s reading today: “We are God’s work of
art, created in Christ Jesus to live the good

life as from the beginning he had meant us
to live it”.
Can you imagine that you are God’s work
of art? All of us are!! So how dare we
condemn, mistreat, hate, exploit, torture,
kill, enslave anyone! We may have
differing opinions or different values than
others; we may not even like them, but we
can still love them, because they are loved
by God and made by him. This is a
profound challenge for us to reflect on, we
need to examine our attitudes to others
etc., and all the time keep in mind: “We are
God’s work of art”!
In the world of art, you need to study the
painting in great detail; knowing
something about the artist is vital too. See
the picture!
THE PEOPLE’S PERMANENT TRIBUNAL
on Turkey and Kurds: A session of the
Permanent Peoples’ Tribunal on alleged
violation of international law and
international humanitarian law by the
Turkish Republic and its officials in their
relations with the Kurdish people and
their organisations will be held in Paris on
15/16th March 2018. A panel of judges
will examine the accusations. The findings
will be presented to the European
Parliament in Brussels in due course. (See

http://tribunal-turkey-kurds.org/ ). I have
been requested to attend as part of the
Imrali Delegation. Sr Devy will join us too
in the tribunal.

RCIA: Second Scrutiny of the Elect (4th
Sunday of Lent)
This Sunday, we continue the celebration
of the Scrutinises. On the Third, Fourth,
and Fifth Sundays of Lent we pray in a
particular way for those who are to be
baptised at the Easter Vigil. We pray that
any attachment to evil might be removed,
and that they be truly converted to Christ.
THE CELEBRATION OF BAPTISM
If you would like to have your child baptised
on the 14th April or later, the next session
will be on Monday 9th & 23rd April at
7.30pm in the Parish Hall. Please contact

course.
ROSARY: Please join us in praying the

the impact, as every £1 you give will be

RECYCLE FACTORY and CAFOD
Invites us to bring in old mobiles; sat navs;
digital cameras, MP3 players, jewellery.
Also, old coins or outdated bank notes.
These will be recycled and the proceeds go
to CAFOD for their charitable causes to help
the poor.

FairTrade Fortnight: Our Confirmation
Candidates invites you to join them for
the “BIG BREW”, today Sunday 11th March
after each Mass in the Parish Hall. The
Fairtrade fortnight is an annual event in
which fair and ethical trading values are
celebrated. A daily ‘cuppa’ for you can mean
clean water for tea farmers and workers.
Parishioners are invited to bring in
Fairtrade cakes and biscuits today, 11th
March.
ST PATRICK’S CELEBRATION
