Introduction and Statement of Purpose

My Original Work is built around providing education to young children in

elementary schools about their growing teeth and how to properly maintain their teeth

because neither the parent or child is fully aware on the mechanics behind teeth. Not

knowing the correct methods to sustain teeth can lead to irrevocable damage as well as

other health issues arising. In order to fully transfer this information over to children

with short attention spans, I plan to first create a fun activity book to complete after my

visit. It will include mind puzzles, coloring activities, and questions eliciting insightful

responses. The activity book will loosely resemble a brochure, but for kids. Hopeful the

elementary student can fill out the book and gain new knowledge over their teeth.

During my visit to the Elementary School, I will also be presenting my

information through a creative, eye-catching powerpoint. My slides will have few words,

but many illustrations so the kids can fully grasp the concepts I am presenting to them. I

will mainly cover topics on the right way to floss, the correct angle to brush from, the

motions to move on the tooth, and etc. The information in words will be written for the

learning level for children making it easier for them to clearly understand. In my

presentation, I will also have a section where I stop and allow them to complete a

section in the activity book.

Pictures on the Powerpoint:

I also decided to ask simple questions to the children after my presentation to see

if they were actually paying attention. If a student attempt to answer they will receive a

dental goodie bag. The dental bag will include a brush, toothpaste, and floss which will

give them the tools necessary to clean their teeth if they don’t already have them. It will

also hopefully motivate the children to listen and be motivated to answer the questions.

I also want to so a small painting activity if I can get it approved. I want the student to

first paint a healthy tooth and tell me characteristics that make it healthy as well as how

to it white and shining. After that, I want them to make the healthy tooth into a cavity

filled one and tell me the differences between the two. This will help them understand

the difference between a healthy and unhealthy tooth and how to avoid cavities.
Review of Skills and Research

The main topic that I will need to research for my original work is the appropriate

method to take care of your teeth. I need to make sure all my information is credible and

take my research from a reliable source. After gathering the proper information I will

condense the important detail and turn it into something the child will be able to

understand without difficulty. When present crucial information to children I also need

to research the better method to help children learn allowing them to benefit from my

original work. If the children don't comprehend the information because I am delivering

it through the wrong way this whole project will fail and ultimately the student will

suffer in their dental health.

Aside from that, I will also have to obtain some background information on how

to correctly format and write an activity book. I made to make the book entertaining as

well as informative. In order to do this, I will need to know the difficulty level of the

student I will be presenting to. With this information, I will have to build the book

properly for my audience. I will also need to find out what types of activities children's

these days find intriguing in order to make my activity book a success.

I also will have to get a school to work with me on my journey and in order to

succeed in that aspect I need to have substantial information about the school, it’s

principal, and students. I need to be on the same page with the principal in what I want

to do for her students and how I am going to achieve my Original Work, while also

benefiting young kids on their teeth.

Methodology

The first step I need to take is to gain my mentor's perspective on my original

work. I want to set a day with my mentor when see is completely free so I we can discuss

my original work allowing me to bounce off ideas ultimately bringing me closer to

guaranteed success. I will also ask her on how to handle young children because she

deals with children every day due to the fact she is a pediatric dentist. This will make it

easier for me to deal with the children also letting me understand the best approach to

truly benefit these kids.

The second step to success is setting up a meeting with the and Elementary

School Principal which will probably be done at Mooneyham Elementary. I choose

Mooneyham because my two brothers attend there which might make them more

reluctant in taking part in my journey in ISM that has just started. Before the meeting, I

will have an outline ready for what I want to discusses including all the question I will be

asking. Hopefully, I will get approved on my first meeting and if not I will set up another

meeting with a different school because I can't let one “no” change my path in ISM.

While I am waiting to get approved I plan to start working on my activity book for

the kids. I will first start brainstorming activities that will lead me to my first rough draft

of the book. I will have multiple people proofread my book and then finalize the

activities that will challenge but also educate the kid. After I get that checked off the list I

will move on to my dental goodie bags. I will probably get my mentor to assist me on

this part because she has to order all her clinic item in bulk every month so that will be a

huge help. My dental goodie bag will consist of a brush, toothpaste, floss, and dental
themed sticker. These tools will allow the student to correctly practice the new skills I

revealed to them and also give them the tools necessary to care for your teeth.

I also plan to end the presentation off by a creative activity if I am able to get

approval from the principal. I want the kids to use their imagination and paint a

perfectly healthy tooth and after talking about the picture I want them to paint a tooth

with a cavity. After we talk about the differences between the two types of teeth I will

end my present and leave the floor open to any question that might have crossed their

mind through my presentation. Throughout the event, I will have one of my close

friends with me taking quality pictures of the event in order to save these memories

forever. With all the picture I will put them together into a video to fully document my

ISM including everything I have worked to achieve.

I truly believe that if I have a growth mindset with my Original Work and manage

my time carefully my project will be incredibly successful. In the long run, the yield will

be twice more than all the effort and hard work have attributed to this journey. Even

Though my Original Work is centered around giving children a better understanding of

their teeth, I will also gain irreplaceable knowledge for education the future.

This presentation will also prepare me to be comfortable around larger audiences

with will improve my public speaking. I can work on increasing my eye contact and they

will essentially be a more hands-on project. I get into directly integrate with the people I

am aimed to help and also receive constructive criticism. In the real world, these young

kids can take their newly learned skills into place by either helping others learn what

they have had the opportunity of learning as well as being benefited in the future when

they grow up with a healthy set of teeth.
