Title of your presentation: Different Cultures and Different Worldviews

Co-authors (if any): X

Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to find methods of teaching a culture and civilization optional course

for non-philological students in order to motivate them and arouse their curiosity. Such an approach is very

useful as students at university level in Romania lack background knowledge of British culture (Ciornei and

Tamaga 2013) and teaching English cannot be separated from teaching culture. A language is used to

communicate and socialize; certain events need background knowledge of culture. Immediate implications
are found in understanding how social events work, and the success or failure of a business collaboration is

ensured. Coffee invitations may last longer or shorter function of culture and a business collaborator might

refuse an alcoholic drink. Knowledge of history is not to be ignored, as we can understand how mentalities

differ function of times and cultures. Ancient civilizations, such as the Romans, have a different ethical

makeup from ourselves: they preferred a heroic death to a life with no achievements. The carpe diem

lifestyle was due to the acceptance of the fact that life was ephemeral due to the constant threat of war.

These differences make the subject of intersemiotic translations, an approach which could add to the

understanding of the advantages of cultural background. The paper argues for the benefits of culture and

civilization courses used as creating the necessary background knowledge of students of foreign language

courses.
