Absenteeism is a problem that schools are facing which can happen all levels in the college, secondary ,or
elementary levels.According to Webster dictionary absenteeism means chronic absence.

In the educational point of view it's the habitual or intentional failure of going to school.Teachers advocate to
have a complete attendance ,but it can't be done so ,because of several reasons and it'll become a problem if the
students are aloof from school for several days.

Chronic absenteeism of students are placed as an obstacle both socially and academically. They lack some
stages of social interaction, and development with their peers and at the same time impacts negatively on their
academic progress this may result to low self-confidence, isolated, and low marks.School attendance could be a
massive issue for school performance and eventually for success .Studies show that higher attendance results
in higher achievement for students .It follows that students who are continuously present perform better than
those who are always absent .

Low student performance also becomes a problem to the teachers who rates the student ,who in return will be
rated in performance by her supervisor or principal it's quite burden to the teacher to create explanation why her
students failed and why they're continually absent and so ,many failures in her class because of absenteeism.

This study involves both pupils and teacher performance due to absence. The importance and urgency of this
study should be given to the present study because low academic performance might cause dislike going to
school, pushing the students to drop out of school .

What are the factors that contribute to students’ absenteeism?

How does absenteeism affects the performance of the student as well as the teachers ?

What are the possible solution to minimize absenteeism in school?

If the students who habitually made absences in class may have lost the chance of learning. He or she might
have less chances of getting aimed position because of the low performance in class .A ccording to Abayomi,
(2002),‘’Absenteeism and truancy may lead a child to become hardened criminal in future life, if not
curbed.‘’When a child tends to get involved in acts such as running away from school, he may not have time to
concentrate on his/her studies, whereby having negative impact on the academic performance of a child. This
will make such child neglect his intended goals and if this happens, such a child will not be able to concentrate
on his/her education and career .In a situation where a child is always playing the truancy, such child will be
missing a lot of lessons and definitely will not know anything being taught by the teacher. As a result, such a
child will never achieve any goal in his/her education and career. That is why the results of absenteeism are to be
identified as so solutions can be formulated to materialize the aims of the school and the individuals.

Astrid Schmulian and Stephen Coetzee, (2011) found that teacher check s always the attendance of learner in
class so that they will be more motivated to go to the school because not checking attendance is also a factor
for students absenteeism.

‘’It comes as no surprise that students with high absence rates earn lower grades than students withbetter
attendance’’Redick& Nicolle,(1990).According to Schimdt,(2000)" absenteeism affect s the students ability to get
high scores in examination ‘’. Both of them show th e disadvantage of the students who are always committing
absentarethey can fail and can cause them to repeat the same year level. while students who have time to spend
in class have better attendance and have positi ve effect to their performance when they can get higher scores
and higher scores in examination of the student.

‘’Absenteeism is detrimental to students’ achievement&, self esteem’‘It can damage student’s performance then
lack of self -confidence of their abilities because they are behind of the lesson. In other words he/she cannot join
to the peers .that makes them isolate and get dropout in the school .

Figure 1.The Schematic Diagram show the relationship between the independent and dependent variables of the
study.

The study focuses mainly on the effe cts of absenteeism to student’s learning performance and the schools
performance as well as .It will also determine the cause and the possible solution to minimize th e
absenteeism. The respondents are Grade 4 students from Golden Heritage Polytechnic College and the
respective teachers .

This study becomes beneficial for the following …

Parents .enable for them to bear in mind the impact of the absenteeism to their children academic performance
so the parents will concern to their child attendance then they're the one to persuade their child to go the school
everyday.

Student .So that the students may know what are the negative effects of absenteeism in their studying
specifically to their academic performances .also in order to them to realize that having a habitual absent is not
good it can make their life destroy

Teachers .Thisstudy beneficial to the teacher also so that can identify if what are the techniques , strategies
motivation that may apply to the students to minimize the absenteeism

The following terminologies are operationally defined as follows…

Absenteeism. It is the habitual absences of the learner which they are not entering in the class/subject

Curbed .Keep in check.so always look the child if they are really going to the school especially the parents

School. The institution we’re educating students or pupil so that they will study.

Students. It is a person who are studying in school so that they can reach their goal in their life

Teachers. The person who are teaching people especially in school.they are the one who mould the students to
be a better person .

Truancy. They are same meaning to the absenteeism it is the action of staying away from school without good
reason

Filipinos have deep regard for education.Education occupies a central place in Philippine political, economic
social and cultural life.It has always been strongly viewed as a pillar of national development and a primary
avenue for social and economic mobility.(Philippine Education for All Primer: Implementation and Challenges.
2015)

Going to school regularly is crucially important for a student’s education and social skills.Chronic absent
students are placed at a disadvantage both socially and academically."Chronic absenteeism" is defined
generally as persistent nonattendance from work or school (McCray, 2006).Webster further defines the word
"chronic" as that which is "marked by long duration or frequent recurrence. Hence, chronic school absenteeism
is absenteeism within the school system that occurs multiple times over a long period of time.

Chronic school absenteeism differs from the following in that school absenteeism can also be described under
various terms such as truancy and school phobia, terms that together can provide greater understanding of
school absenteeism.Truancy, by definition, is the act of staying away from school without permission (McCray,
2006).

School phobia, on the other hand, has been defined as an irrational fear or anxiety about attending school
(Chitiyo, Wheeler, 2006).However, truancy and school phobia are specific terms that are linked to possible
underlying reasons for not attending school, and while touched upon will not be the focus of this effort.Instead,
chronic school absenteeism will be used, as the term is more general and denotes the problem instead of the
possible causes.

Due to chronic absenteeism, students miss out on critical stages of social interaction and development with
their peers and at the same time impacts negatively on their academic progress, as cited in the study of Batingal
(2014).This can result to low self-esteem, social isolation and dissatisfaction that could well have precipitated
non-attendance in the first place.

Educators have long emphasized the importance of class attendance.Only in the classroom may the student
hear the teacher's presentation, participate in class discussions, and enjoy the benefits of spontaneous
interactions between the students and teacher. It comes as no surprise that students with high absence rates
earn lower grades than students with better attendance (Redick&Nicoll 1990).Fleming and Zafirau found that
over three-fourths of school failure rates wereexplained by the attendance rate (Fleming &Zafirau 1982).

Students with poor academic performance are the single strongest predictor of dropping out of school. This is
also interlinked with too many absences from class.Andrea Canter, a School Head of the Minneapolis Schools
(2014) said that poor grades, low test scores and poor performance task ratings may increase student frustration
and reduce motivation to stay in school and strive for higher education.Additionally, retention in the same grade
level is highly related to dropping out of school due to too many days of absenteeism. Moreover, some research
indicates that retained students are three times more likely to dropout that those who are non-retained students.

School Dropouts have higher rates of chronic truancy and tardiness than those who stay in school.Attendance
problems can be an early indicator that the student is disengaging from the schooling process Gausted, Joan
(1991).According to Canter (2014), daily school attendance reflects both student motivation and parental
support.

In a study conducted by Suhid, Asmawati, Aroff, Abdul Rahman Md. Ph. D.and Kamal, Norlaina, (2012), one of
the members of the Faculty of Educational Studies in University Putra Malaysia, who studied about "Factors
Causing Student Absenteeism According to Peers, there are many factors involved in motivating students to
attend school. Students who are not motivated, hence, will usually decide not to be present in school. Based on
several researches conducted, the rate of absenteeism among students increases annually in the University
Putra Malaysia. As a result, this problem more or less adversely affected the school’s reputation. Thus, their
study was conducted to identify factors that cause students to play truant. A set of questionnaire was used to
collect the information needed.

One of the factors that affected students’ motivation in going to school is indiscipline, according to the findings
of the study of Suhid, Asmawati, Aroff, Abdul Rahman Md. Ph. D.and Kamal, Norlaina, (2012).Indiscipline among
students is a perennial problem.

This problem of absenteeism is regardless of gender, race and religion. The act of truancy among students
occurs when there is an attitude problem among students towards schooling to seek knowledge.

Other discipline problems were actions that are criminal in nature, time wasting, personal neatness,
delinquency, vandalism and obscenity. The issue is students who stay away from school without permission will
not only be left behind in the learning process, but worse still they will probably end up in drug abuse,
gangsterism, alcohol consumption, free sex, gambling and loitering. There are many factors why children stay
away from school without permission.In Malaysia, these factors include influence of peers (Mohd.Shubari, 2000;
Suseladevy, 2004), fear of being bullied, fear of teachers, dislike of certain subjects, thinking that they will fail
(Thi, 1994; Supramaniam, 1986), no encouragement from parents or family problems (MohamadYatim, 1999), and
the school factor (Hussein, 1993; Tan, 2006).All of these factors have resulted in students having no motivation
to learn, therefore they turn their attention to hang around at other places or loitering.Research findings have
also shown that students who do not support and participate in any school programs or activities are those who
are not interested to be in school (She, 2002).

This chapter provides information about the search methods used to reach the results. The researcher chose the
method of qualitative and quantitative .which will aiming to obtain relevant data to achieve the objective of the
research that determines the main reasons why students commit too many absences.. In this research study, a
critical decision was made of the factors that affect the absenteeism of students in classroom .And quantitative
research methods help to know the students number absences by converting the data into useful statistics in
the attempt to what the observation and approval of the participating students .

The study were conducted one of school in Cagayan de Oro City at Golden Heritage Polytechnic College (
GHPC) Zone 4, Vamenta Blvd Carmen, Cagayan de Oro City , 9000 Province of Misamis Oriental intended for all
Grade 4 students and to the teacher advisory.

The target respondent of this Study are all Grade 4 students of Golden Heritage Polytechnic College and the
assigned adviser.

One of the instrument that researcher used is to provides a survey questionnaire , which are distributing to all
the grade 4 students participants This instrument used to gather data regarding the absenteeism such as the
factor and effect of absenteeism to their academic performance are included in the questioner .

According to Polit&Hungler (1995:656 ) Validity is the degree to which an instrument measures what it is
intended to measure

As a researcher , I ensured that this questionnaire designed by validation process .which the researcher ask
clarification to the participants for follow up interview process .to insure and measure the appropriateness of
instrument that could be purpose of it.

This study aimed is to help the students to enlighten their mind of what does the effect of chronic absences In
the field of study which has a big factor to their academic performance that cause low grades and leads them
dropping and also to the teachers be aware of what are possible reason behind of doing absenteeism.

The researcher get first the permission of the principal consent to allow all the Grade 4 pupils to conduct an
interview , second is the adviser of that certain pupils and third , which is the important are the pupils in Grade
4.Then the researcher will distribute the questionnaire in order to attain the desired information that want to
acquire from the pupils .After answering the query and collect the pupils answered it follow by focus group
discussion (FGD) .Then the researcher will go to the grade 4 teacher adviser to ask on how he/she will manage
to minimize the absenteeism of her pupils
