This letter describes the work between Cross Country Elementary/Middle School and Baltimore City
Public Schools (City Schools) this year, and serves as supporting documentation for your application
to be a MAEOE Green School.
• Ms. Kristine Buls is participating in the Green Leader Achievement Unit (AU) program this year.
As part of the current teacher contract, teachers earn AUs as part of their annual evaluation, by
taking on additional responsibilities, and/or by successfully completing professional
development. At Cross Country, Ms. Buls is leading several greening programs including
completing the application for the school’s fourth MAEOE Green School Award.
• Cross Country has designated Ms. Buls as the School Sustainability Ambassador, who is the point
of contact for greening and sustainability work, as required by City Schools’ 2016 Sustainability
Policy.
• Cross Country is receiving a grant from the City’s Office of Sustainability. The school is using its
Green, Healthy, Smart Challenge grant to support its student Green Team which is focusing on
recycling, gardening, and energy conservation. Please note that in Baltimore City, the school
system is a separate entity than the City of Baltimore, but we share funding raised for school
greening efforts and coordinate our work closely.
Sincerely,
Joanna Pi-Sunyer
Green Schools Coordinator
