ENDODONTIC POST-TREATMENT INSTRUCTIONS

I. Avoid eating or drinking hot food stuff till numbness has entirely
dissipated . in case of children care must be taken to avoid injury to lips
by biting.
II. Slight discomfort following endodontic treatment may occur. This is
normal and is caused by the inflammatory process that was present in
and around your tooth. The tooth should feel much better in 3-5 days.
Take medication as prescribed.
III. Do not intake alcohol or recreational drugs while you taking prescribed
medications
IV. Avoid chewing on the tooth for several days in order to minimize
discomfort. After this, try chewing soft foods on the tooth. If sensitivity
continues, please contact us.
V. If the gums around the tooth are irritated following the endodontic
treatment, Rinsing your mouth with warm salt water ( one half
teaspoon of table salt to one glass warm water) will speed up the
healing. This should be repeated every three or four hours until the
discomfort subsides. If the discomfort does NOT subside, please contact
us.
VI. Upon completion of the root canal therapy, a temporary restoration is
placed in the tooth to prevent possible recontamination of the root canal
by saliva and bacteria. Do not eat or drink anything for the next half an
hour. Do not try to feel around the tooth with your tongue or finger.
The temporary filling takes about half an hour to harden.

VII. You may floss and brush normally unless told otherwise by the doctor

VIII. It is normal for the temporary filling to wear out with use or eventually
falls out .It is very important that you contact your dentist to have a
permanent restoration placed.

IX. You need to have a permanent filling or a crown placed on your tooth
within 1 month of completion of root canal. If not done, the tooth is very
likely to fracture or develop further decay underneath the temporary
filling causing the root canal treatment to fail.

X. If you experience significant swelling and/or severe pain, please

contact us immediately as this is an unusual occurrence after root
canal treatment. A “flare-up” resulting in a rapidly increasing area of
swelling must be treated as soon as possible.
In general a flare up occurs after a few hrs post treatment and may last
2-3 days

Possible causes are treatment of

- Badly infected teeth
- Teeth with swellings
- Re treatments
- Continuation of treatment done elsewhere

XI. It will be necessary to have one or more short follow-up appointments

so we can evaluate the healing process of the treated tooth and
surrounding tissues. This allows us the opportunity to provide the best
possible care and make sure that you are not having any problems.
