Four teams stay alive

T
here was a lot going on this weekend, sports-wise, both
locally and nationally. Let’s start on the local front as San
Mateo County still has four teams vying for a Northern
California basketball title: the Menlo School boys, and the Sacred
Heart Prep, Notre Dame-Belmont and Woodside Priory girls.
Menlo has most certainly found its playoff legs after a disappoint-
ing 0-2 performance in the Central Coast Section Open Division
bracket. The Knights now appear to be hitting their stride once
again, a groove that earned them the No. 2 seed in CCS Open. It
seems as if they needed time to adjust to the speed and caliber of play-
off teams after cruising to the WBAL title.
Now, they’ll face a familiar opponent in the semifinals as the Knights
take on eighth-seeded Palo Alto tonight.
The Sacred Heart Prep girls just keep win-
ning, despite having one of the shallowest
team rosters of anybody left in the state. But
what the eight-seeded Gators lack in numbers
they make up for with long, athletic players.
Four of the five starter are 5-7 or taller, and the
Gators’ shortest player, 5-4 guard Denise Stine,
may be their best defensive weapon.
Notre Dame-Belmont may be the scrappiest
of the county teams still alive. With their most
athletic player, Olga Faasolo, nursing a
banged-up knee, a shooting percentage that
would suggest losing rather than winning, and
a team that really starts four guards, the Tigers just keep scratching
and clawing to get wins.

age of 37.5, which is tops in the Nor Cal Division IV bracket.

Fueling his fire

Then there is Woodside Priory girls’ team, which has absolutely steam-
rolled others since the postseason began. Through three CCS Division V
games, culminating with the section championship, and through two
rounds of Nor Cals, the Panthers are living up to their billing as the top
seed in the Nor Cal Division IV bracket. They have won five straight, all
