Nursing is a profession which is increasingly developing its own research and body of literature.

Nursing is no longer viewed as simply a practical occupation but a profession that values higher

education as a means to build competent practitioners at all levels. This study was a descriptive

exploratory research using the qualitative approach to explore the motivation of nursing

educators in Lipa City, Batangas, Philippines in pursuing a doctoral education. The study was

guided by the Motivational Cycle Theory. Eight (8) nursing educators participated in an in-depth

semi-structured interview. This was the number when saturation point ensued. Individual consent

was sought. The study remained faithful to the rigors of the qualitative approach.

The themes and categories that emerged were: Theme 1 - Inspirational Motivators; categories for

this theme were internal and external factors; Theme 2 – Disheartening Barriers; categories for

this theme were situational factors, organizational factors, and personal factors; Theme 3 –

Essential Support; categories for this theme were devoted family support, warm support from

significant others, constant support from colleagues, and regular support from administrators.
It was concluded that nurse educators were motivated to pursue a doctoral degree; barriers were

identified however the support from the different sectors helped the nurse educators to overcome

the barriers.

This study uncovered many questions for further research on the best ways to encourage and to

support nurse educators in pursuing doctoral education.
